l. Generol descriplion of cqmerq
For eose of reference the illustroiions to the description of the ARRIFLEX 35
hove been printed on the flops of the cover of this monuql which unfold on
either side of the text.
First of oll open out the covers. You will now see the two side views of the
ARRIFLEX 35. lf you turn the flops inwords, you will find the front ond reor
views of the comero on the reverse side. All ports referred to in the text ore
numbered. With the oid of these numbers you will be oble to locote the
ports in the illustrotions eosily. ln this woy you will soon become ocquointed
with the most importonf feotures of the ARRIFLEX 35.
The stondord equipment for the comero, which is complete with mirror reflex
shutter, viewfinder,,ond three-lens turret, consists of hondgrip motor,200 ft.
or 400 ft. film mogozine, o motte box with filter stcrge for 3" squore filters,
o bottery coble, o cutting iemplote, two lens cops to cover ony unused lens
socl<ets, o necl< strop, o bottle of non-freezing oil ond o smoll tin of non-
freezing greose. Plus, of course, lenses ond o bottery.
Let us now toke o look ot the exterior detoils of the ARRIFLEX 35. For the
soke of clority, the interior detoils of the comero ond mogozine will be deolt

Right sid e: The bulge I of the mirror reflex shutter ond the thumb grip 2
ore generously proportioned ond offord the operotor o firm but comfortoble
grip on the comero. On ihe model ll BV of the ARRIFLEX 35 ihe odiustoble
knob 3 for the vqrioble shutter will be found directly below the thumb grip.
Situoted to the reor of the thumb grip is the inching knob 4 for the single
frome shoft, which is o stondord feoture of the ARRIFLEX 35 ond enobles the
mirror reflex shutter to be turned by hond. Just beside the inching knob there
is o detochoble protecting "nose" 5, which is removed when the comero is
operoted with o synchronous motor ond screwed into sofe keeping position
neor the thumb grip. The tochometer 5 registers film speeds between 0 ond
50 fromes per second. A ploce is olso provided'obove the tochometer for
the pilot light impulse generotorT, on occessory which is required for operotion
with the Blimp. This impulse genercrtor forms port of the stondord equipment
of the ARRIFLEX 35 if ordered with Blimp, but is olso qvoiloble ot extro
chorge for loter instollotion by competent service shops.

the viewfinder tube ond the ground gloss. The mogozine gib lock l5 ond o
second eyelet 16 for the corrying strop will be found obove the three-lens
tu rret.
Three-lens lurrel
The three-lens turret 17 is designed to toke three interchongeoble lenses
in Arriflex mount. The flonge focol distonce is 52 mm. The three-lens turret
con be eosily rototed by meons of three turret grips 18, ond o click stop
engoges when the desired lens I9 is in toking position. Code morks engroved
on the reor surfoce of the turret grips enoble the lenses fo be identified
without removing comero from eye. Most normol lenses ore equipped with
lorge follow focus grips 20 for focusing. In order to chonge o lens it is merely
necessory to press the two locking grips 2l together ond lift the lens out.
Sunshode ond motle box
Required os bosic equipment of the ARRIFLEX 35 is o sunshode (Fig. l)which
protects the lens in use from stroy light ond shields the idle lenses. lt olso ser-

The odiustoble motte box22 is o speciol occessory. lt serves os o sunshode for
the lens in use ond olso protects the two idle lenses from stroy light with its
cover 23. In oddition it olso octs os o filter stoge. The motte box consists of o
colf opsible leother bellows 24, the front frome 25 of which hos o ribbed pro-
file for reosons of stobility. The front frome is qttoched to o boom 26, which
hos odiustment morkings for focol lengths of 28 mm ond 35 mm. The fully
extended position gives the required degree of protection for q lens of 50 mm
focol length. The front frome of the motte box olso tokes holders for speciol
effects mosks, os well qs correspondingly smoller speciol mosks for lenses of
long focol length, i. e. over 50 mm. The motte box boom runs through o clomp

use of 75x75 mm (3"x3") filters is provided. lf squore groduoted filters of
l00x75mm (4"x3") ore to be used, the stoge con be verticolly odiusted to
ony position required ond will remoin in this setting of its own occord. A
supplementory Arri speciol filter mount with polor, izing filter con be odiusted
by meons of o wheel to give the required setting of the polorizing filter.
Mogozines
The compoct single-comportment type mogozines used in ARRIFLEX 35 hove
o buih-in feed ond toke-up mechqnism qnd con ioke 200 ft. or 400 ft. of block
ond white or colour film.
After the lock 3l hos been releosed, the lid of the 200 ft. or 400 ft. mogozine
con be completely detoched. The footoge scole 32 ond two spindle knobs 33
for toking up the slock in the mogozine ore situoted on the reverse side of
the mogozine.
These feotures ore situoted in the some ploce on the 400 ft. mogozine. il
Molors
The motor 34 is ottoched to the comero by meons of four screws ond serves
ot the some time os o grip for the operotor's left hond. The rheostot control
cop 35 ond the socket for the power supply coble 36 protrude from the
bottom of this combined hondgrip ond motor housing. A toggle switch 37 for
continuous running ond o pressure switch 38 for short quick tokes ore mountede on the motor housing.View original page 8Page 9 · Read text
The following motors con be used with the ARRIFLEX 35:
l. A speciol quick-storting hondgrip motor with built-in rheostot for regulo-
tion of film speeds between l2 ond 32 fromes per second when run from
o 16 V bottery. lf no higher film speeds thon 24 fromes per second ore f required, this motor con olso be fed from q l2 V cor bottery. For higher f
. speeds up to 50 fromes per second, the comero must be operoted from o
24 V bottery. High speeds should be used for short sequences only.
2. Similor to 1., but for use with 24128 V current, such os in oir plones.
3. A hondgrip motor with centrifugol governor for 24 fromes per second.

ll. Preporing the c0me10 for filming
looding of 200 ft. or 400 ff. Mogozines
The operotions described in this porogroph should first be proctised in doy-
light with blonk film until the operotor is perfectly fomilior with the entire
procedure. This will greotly focilitote the looding of unexposed film in the
dorkroom or in o chonging bog.
Only use film wound with lhe emulsion side inwords!
The scole of the footoge counter on the bock of the 200 ft. or 400 ft. mogo-
zines refers to normol block ond white film. With colour film, this counter will
not reod occurotely since the colour emulsion is somewhot thicker thon blqck
ond white thus giving o reel of lorger diometer. For this reoson the indicoted
copocity of these mogozines should on no occount be exceeded.
To remove the lid of the mogozine for looding, first press down the retoining
spring ond turn the lock 3l to the left. Then toke hold of the lid by the pro-
iection obove the lock, tilt it forwords ond lift it out of the two slots ot the
bottom.

Film loop protector
In order to ovoid ony possibility of domoge to the film loop during tronsport,
it is odvisoble to use the loop protector (Fig. B). lt con be used with oll ARRI-
FLEX 35 mogozines ond consists of o loose cover shield which is pushed underF
o metcrl plote ottoched to tlre mogozine mouth.
The loop protector is ottoched in the following monner: After the mogozine
hos been looded, press the film gently ogoinst the mogozine mouth ond slip
the guord over the film loop ond under-the plote. The film loop is now com-
pletely protected ogoinst kinking or ony other form of domoge. Core should

Attoching 200 ft. or 400 ft. mogozines to csmero
Before ottoching the mogozine to the comero it is strongly odvisoble to re-
move ihe power supply coble from its socket, since consideroble domoge could? be coused to the film gote or clow mechonism of the comero if the pressure
switch were inodvertontly octuoted. To ottoch the mogozine, turn the lock l0

oiioching ihe mogozine, move bock the clow os for os it will go by meons
of the inching knob 4 of the single frome shoft ond open the film gote. The
mogozine lock must olso be opened by turning the gib lock l5 to the left ond
pulling it out.
Now poss the loop through the operture ot the top of the ARRIFLEX 35, opply
the mogozine mouth to the reor side of the dove-toil ond push the mogozine
downwords. The mogozine drive geor is now engoged with the comero. The
meshing of the geors con be oided by corefully turning the inching knob of the
single frome shoft. Greot core should be token to see thot the film is not
cought or iommed between mogozine ond comero when ottoching the mogo-
zine, since o kink in the film might not poss through the gote. The gib lock l5
of the mogozine is then pressed home ond tightened by turning it to the
right. The mogozine is now firmly ottoched to the comero.
Threoding of film
The film should be inserted in such o woy thot o loop is formed obove the film
gote. This should coincide os closely os possible with the guide line in the
comero. lf the loop is too lorge, it con odversely offect picture steodiness. The

some is true if the loop is too smoll. In order to be obsolutely sure thot the
loop is of the correct size, you moy count off l5 holes between the mogo-
zine mouth ond the uppermost point reoched by the clow in its trovel. When
threoding the film, moke sure thot the emulsion side is focing the lens. lf this
is not the cose, the film in the feed reel is not correctly wound. Now open.o the film gote ond move bock the clow by meons of the inching knob. lnsert
the film in the film gote ond form o loop of the correct size by gently moving
the film up ond down with the middle ond index fingers of the left hond.
Before closing the film gote, odiust the clow to the perforotion by meons of
the inching knob of the single frome shoft in order to prevent it domoging
the film. After closing the film gote, turn the inching knob of the single frome
shoft o few times in order to check whether the film tronsport is functioning
properly.

The comero door con now be reploced ond fostened in position by turning the
lock to the right. ln controst to ottoching the lid of the mogozine, the comero
door must not be opplied ot on ongle but porollel to the comero (ond de-
tqched in the some woy).
The ARRIFLEX 35 is now reody for filming.

the bulge I of the mirror reflex shutter with the right hond. A speciol grip 2
is provided for the thumb of the right hond, while the middle ond index
fingers operote the foliow focus grips of the toking lens.
With the comero securely held in both honds, press its rubber eyecup firmly
ogoinst the eye giving the comero o three-point support. lt is odvisoble to
proctise the correct woy to hold the comero until one gets the proper feel.

Viewfinding ond focusing
Whether the comero is running or stonding still, the mirror reflex shutter of
the ARRIFLEX 35 shows o porollox-free imoge in the viewfinder identicol in
focus to the film imoge ond mognified 61lz times. When the comero is idle,
however, viewfinding ond focusing is only possible when the mirror reflex
shutter is closed. This is done by turning the single frome shoft inching knob 4.
Now odiust the eyepiece to your eye by turning the diopter collor 13 to

obtoin the greotest degree of definition on the ground gloss groin, ond lock
the setting by meons of its screw.
/^\ The setting of the diopter odiustment con be reod off on q scole ond recorded
,, I for resetting ot ony time.
The toking lens is focused by octuoting the follow focus grips 20 of the
lens with the middle ond index fingers of the right hond. The lens is correctly
focused when the viewfinder imoge oppeors cleorly in the eyepiece, since
the ground gloss ond film imoges ore identicol in oreo ond definition.
Coulion: Under no conditions should the mirror reflex system be tompered
with, os it is impossible to reodjust the comero without speciol equipment.
The eyepiece must therefore never be removed from its sockef, nor must the
ground gloss frome be token out or the mirror reflex shutter unscrewed.
It is desiroble to open the diophrogm wide for eose of focusing ond viewing
ond to stop down to desired f-opening before shooting. To simplify this rou-
tine ond to permit setting the diophrogm without removing comero from eye,
the diophrogms on mosi lenses ore equipped with clickstops. Thus the f-stops
con be set by counting the clicks. Follow focus is eosy without the need
of on ossistont. Even with dolly shots it is o simple motter to keep in focus.
At oll times it is imperotive to hold the eye close to the eyecup in order
to prevent stroy light from entering the comero by woy of the viewfinder.
Should operoting conditions moke it difficult or even impossible to observe
this rule, the viewfinder should be closed down by meons of the lever 14
below the viewfinder tube.
Chonging tenses
The three grips 18 of the lens turret 17 enoble the operotor to chonge ro-
pidly from one lens to onother. The toking lens is the one neorest to the right
hond of the operotor on the bulge of the mirror reflex shutter. lt is position-
ed by meons of o click stop. A code mork on the reor surfoce of the turret
grip opposite this lens ond in the direct line of sight of the operoior's left
eye indicotes its focol length. lt is therefore no longer necessory to interrupt
viewfinding or focusing to check the lens. The grip with one dot refers to the
lens with the shortest focol length, the grip with three to thot with the longest,
provided, of course, thot the lenses ore mounted in the correct order.
lf o ropid chonge of lenses is required in the middle of o scene, it is odvisoble
to prefocus the lens ond preset its operture. lt is then merely necessory to
swing the lens round into position by meons of the turret grips.

The ARRIFLEX 35 lens progrom is very extensive ond lenses for every pur-
pose ore ovoiloble. They ore freely interchongeoble ond con be mounted in
o motter of seconds ofter detoching ihe motte box ond pressing together the
two locking grips 2l on the socket of the lens to be reploced. This releoses
the lens which con now be removed. When mounting o lens on the turret toke
core thot the tongue of the lens socket engoges in the groove of the lens
mount.
lf o lens of more thon 28 mm focol length is required for filming ogoinst the
light, the corresponding mosk must be inserted in the front frome 25 of the
motte box. This mosk is o speciol occessory ond is ovoiloble of extrq chorge.
When working with lenses of longer focol length thon 85 mm it is olwoys
odvisoble to use o speciol ARRI tripod. lf the lenses used hove o longer focol
length thon 300 mm, o lens crodle will olso be required, due to the extro
weight of such lenses. In this cose, other lenses on the turret which interfere
will hove to be removed ond their mounts closed with the covity cops supp-
lied for the purpose. These cops should olwoys be used if less thon three len-
ses ore mounted on the turret of one time. For extreme close-ups, o lens
extension tube con be mounted between lens ond turret. But this orronge-
ment is only of limited opplicotion. The most sotisfoctory woy is to use o
mocro lens which permits continuous focus from infinity to 4" from lens.

orrow ond press it in. This orrests the setting of the vorioble shutier ond the
required operture con now be odiusted by meons of the single frome shoft.
Under no condilion musl the odiusfing knob for the vorioble shutier3 be press-
ed in while the comerq is running, or lhe cqmero be swilched on while the
knob is pressed in.
The spring-looded beoring of the odiusting knob for the vorioble shuiter is
intended to prevent ony possibility of domoging the shutter. lt returns to its
normol position on being releosed. lt should therefore be held down until
the desired operture hos been odiusted by turning the inching knob 4 of the
single frome shoft to right or left.
According to the colour of the edge of the mirror reflex shutter segment
visible through the lens socket, the ongle of shutter opening con be reod
on the inner scole (block) or the outer scole (red) (Fig. l3).
Porticulor core should be token to see thot the vqrioble shutter clicks home
in the required position, os it might otherwise drift while the comero is in
operotion.
The formulo for finding the effective exposure time is os follows'

( Commencing operolion First connect up the ARRIFLEX 35 to the bottery by meons of the power supply coble, which plugs into the socket 36 on the hondgrip motor. Then odiust the rheostot cop 35 to the required speed. ln order to woste os little film os possible, proceed os follows: Set the speed opproximotely before threoding the film. The difference bet- ween the running speeds of the comero with film ond without is negligible. lmmediotely ofter ottoching the mogozine, set the comero in motion for o few seconds by octuoting the pressure switch 38 ond odiust the rheostqt con- trol cop 35 to the desired speed, checking the odiustment with the oid of the tqchometer. A red mork on the tochometer indicotes the normol speed of 24 fromes per second. Approximotely 3 feet of film ore required for this operotion. When filming is completed, turn the inching knob of the single frome shoft 4 until the viewfinder imoge ogoin qppeors in the eyepiece, or until the red dot on the inching knob coincides with its index mork, unless, of course, the mirror reflex shutter hoppens to stop in this position when the comero is switched off. In this woy the omount of stroy light entering the comero through the lens ond viewfinder while the comero is idle will be reduced to q minimum. Before filming ogoin ofter long pouses, ond porticulorly if the comero hos been tronsported in the meontime, turn the two spindle knobs on the bock of the mogozine in the direction of the orrows in order to toke up ony film slock in the mogozine ond to ensure thot the comero stsrts smoothly. Storoge cnd lronsporl of cqmerq Whenever possible, the ARRIFLEX 35 should olwoys be tronsported ond stor- ed in ihe ARRI cose speciolly designed for ihe purpose. lf the mogozine is not deioched for tronsport ond porticulorly if the comero is subiect to - vehicle it is qdvisoble to qrrest the film byvibrotion in o cor or other - by meons of the single frome shoft.engoging the clow in the perforotion To do this, turn the inching knob until the dot coincides with the mork on the comero housing. In this woy it is impossible, even with severe shoking, for the upper ond lower film loops to slip. Furthermore, the mirror reflex shutter remoins closed in this position, so thot no light con fog the film. After the comero hos been lronsported it is olwoys odvisoble to toke up ony slock in the mogozine by meons of the spindle knobs on the bock of the mogozine, os the film con work loose in the mogozine due to vibrotion. lf this is not done, the film might not be token up properly on storting the motor, which could leqd to undesiroble looping ond perhops even to iomming. 20View original page 23
