THE CURTAIN The shutter curtain contains 5 aperturesranging
APERTURES from full opening o to 'A of an inch. when the
letter O appearsat F, the shutter is wide open.
The other apertures,1'/, %, % and %, follow in rotation at F as key
A is turned to the left.
THE SHUTTER The metal plate, attachedto the FocusingHood,
SPEED PLATE givesthe approximateshutterspeeds,in fractional
parts oi seconds, obtainable with the various
combinationsof curtain aperturesand tensionnumbers.
SETTING THE Push down lever H. Slide the bar D to the left,
SHUTTER exposing I, indicating instantaneousexposure.
Wind the curtain by turning key A to the left, until
the required aperture appearsat F. If the curtain is set at a smaller
aperturethan required, releasethe curtain by pressingbutton M back-

CAUTION A safetylock preventsthe *indirrg of the curtain before
the mirror is set in focusinAposition. This preventsfog-

the shuttercurtain
REGULATING THE Tension on the curtain is regulatedby turn-
SHUTTER SPEED ing the milled head to the right until the F
required tensionnumber appearsat G. The
numbersrun from 1 to 6-the highest number indicating the greatest
speed. If the tensionnumber is set at a higher tension than required,

SUGGESTIONS
Find the subjectgroup, and the exposure for movement at righi
anp, lesto camerawill be found in the squareon the line of " distanceof
object" and under "focal lenAth of lens."
Example:
Subject Motor Boat
Distance 50 Feet
Speed of Subiect 30 Miles per hour
' Fbcal Lengttr-of Lens . 6+'
Exposure
'
The shutterspeedsgiven are necessaryto stop the motion. The lens
opening must be regulatedto meet the prevailinA light conditions.
For bright days it is suggestedthat Stop F.8 be usedwith exposures
r Fr to cto; F.5.6 with exposuresc*o to #o; F.4.5 for exposures to "lo , otnn.
On hazy or dull days, with same exposure, proportionately larger
lens opening,sshould be used.
It is not advisableto operate the shutter at a higher speed than is
necessaryto stop movement of the subject, thereby S,aininSthe advan-
tage of full exposuresand the ability to use smaller lens openings,
which will give greaterdepth of focus.
To decreasea given shutter speed % for movement at'45 degrees,
or % for oncoming subjects, use the second lower speed on Graflex
exposureplate for I less, and the fifth lower exposuref"or % less.
