VIEWING AND COMPOSING THE PICTURE
There ore three methods of viewing ond composing the picture:
l. First, ond most commonly used, is looking down on the Ground-gloss Reflector. !
A full-sized imoge will be visible which, except thot it is reversed left-to-
right, is identicol with whot you will octuolly see in the finished photogroph,

picture is composed.
2. Second, lhere is the "criticol focusing" method
obtoined by using the Focusing Mognifier (.25) ond
looking down ot the imoge registered on the
ground-gloss Reflector.
3. Third, there is the direct eye-level composition which
is obtoined by sighting through the smoll squore
of the Reor Sight for Direcr Viewfinde r (-26 )
ond the lorge squore in the front formed by I
opening the Eye-level Finder Front Flop (29).
FOCUSING
One of the chief odvonloges of o reflex type comero is the obility to occurotely
l ond outomoticolly bring lhe comero into focus by turning the Focusing Knob (6)
while 'looking ot the shorpness of the imoge reflected directly on the Ground-gloss
Reffector. Under most circumstonces this is the best method to focus this comero.
However, it is olso possible to focus the comero by utilizing the distonce scoleView original page 14Page 15 · Read text
provided on the bose of the Focusing Knob (.6). In this cose, the distonce between the comero ond the subiect is meosured or estimoted ond this distonce is set on the Distonce Scole ( 5) by oligning the proper numerol (in feet-) with the smoll block dot in the brocket under the "3.5" mork on the Depth-of-Field Scole (4). Used in conjunction with the Depth-of-Field Scole, this method is used for most fost-oction shots. To illustrote the use of the combinotion distonce scole ond the depth-of-field scole for fost-oction photogrophy, we will suppose thot the operture setting for this porticulor shot is t/ll. Ploce the infinity mork (co) on the Distonce Scole (5) in olignment with the forword "16" of the Depth-of-Field Scole t4). Next reod the numerol on the Distonce Scole (.5) immediotely under the reor "16" of the Depth-of-Field Scole. This is | 2 feet. This meons thot ony imoge folling within l2 feet ond infinity will be in occeptoble shorp focus. Consequently, ofter setting the comero in this monner for the first shot, it is possible to photogroph os mony oction pictures os you wish of ony imoge which folls between | 2 feet to infinity, without re-focusing for eochView original page 15

SETTING THE SHUTTER SPEED
The shutter on the comero ollows light reflected from the imoge to poss through
the Toking Lens (19) ond foll on the unexposed port of the film for o controlled
number of seconds. The 9 shutter speeds provided ore B, 1,1/2, l/s, 1/lo, I/zs,
l/50, l/lO0 ond 1/300 second. The numerols oppeoring on the Shutter Speed
Scole (9) ore, except for B ond l, froctions of o second; thot is "2" equols l/2
of I second ond "300" equols I /300th port of I second. "B" stonds for ,,butb,,
ond meons thot the shutter will remqin open os long os the Shutter Releose Lever
is kept pressed in.
To set the shutter speed, move the Shutter Speeds Setting lever ( I O) until it
is correctly oligned to the block line under the proper shutter speed you hove
selected.

for os it will go. This must be done every time
isbefore the Shutter Releose Button ( I I )
pressed in.
Note on Self-tlmer: To operote the self-timing
device which is built into the shutter, first set the
shutter speed, then cock the shutter ond finolly
move the Selftimer Lever (21) oll the woy to
the right. The Selftimer is set into motion by
pressing the Shutter Releose Button ( I I ) in. lt
works with opproximotely l0 seconds deloy.
Releose A coble releose ottochment con be fitted to the bose of the Shutter
Button.
SETTING THE APERTURE
The size of the operture or lens opening determines, in port, the omount of
light possing through the toking lens on to the unexposed film' The Aperture Scole I l, 16 is orronged in the order of the fotlowing F-stop volues : 3.5, 4, 5'6, 8,View original page 17Page 18 · Read text
www.butkus.us
and 22' Most fight is let through ot f /3.5 opening ond there is opproximotely
75% decreose in light tronsmission between tne t/3.5 stop ond the f/4 stop. For
eoch successive higher F-stop number thereofter there is on opproximotely SO %
decreose so thot the feost omount of light is odmitted at t/22'. Since the omount
of light required to reproduce the imoge on the film is fixed, it con be reodily
seen thot the shutter speed ond the operture ore inter-dependent. Stoting this
onother woy, o high F-stop number (smoll lens opening) will require o slow shutter
speed (longer light odmission time) ond conrurr"ly, o fost shutter speed (short
time) will coll for o lower F-stop number (lorger lens opening). The lens opening
is set by moving the Aperture Setting lever (17) to the prop., F-stop number.
DEPTH.OF-FIEtD
t. Explonotion of "Depth-of-Field,,
When the comero is focused on o picrure-subiect, there is o zone in front of
ond to the bock of the picture-subiect within which oll imoges ore still in
occeptobly shorp focus. On the other hond, imoges folling outside of this zone
become progressively out-of-focus. This zone of occeptoble shorp focus is colled

the "depth-of-fietd" or the "depth-of-focus" ond is porticulorly importont to
beginners when focusing ot very close distonces.
2. lnler-relofionship between Lens Opening ond '6Depfh'of-Field"
A direct relotionship exists between the "depth-of-field" ond such foctors os
distonce of comero to picture subiect, omount of lens opening, focol length of
shot toking lens, ond occeptoble shorpness of focus ollowed for the porticulor
ond ihe "depth-of-field". Broodly speoking, we moy soy thot the "depth-of-field"
distonce between is primorily influenced by (l) the lens opening ond (2) the
the comero ond the piclure-subiect. Toking these two fqctors in the order listed,
GREATER it con be soid thot smoll lens opening (higher F-stop number) gives
"depth-of-field" ond conversely, lorge lens opening (lower F-stop number) will
result in DECREASING this zone of shorp focus.
to As to distonce between the comerq ond the picture-subiect, it is well
the remember thot the closer the distonce the tESS "depth-of-field" so thot
beginner should be very coreful to focus his moin subiect correctly when toking
pictures ot close distonces. For foirly distont fo very distqnt imoges, the

Remarks: The volues of the "deplh-of field" inscribed on the bose of the
Focusing Knob (6) ore opproximote figures in feet.
3. To reod the "Depth-of-Fleld"
l. Reod the operture or F-stop number oppeoring in the Aperture Scqle. For
purposes of our illustrotion, we will ossume fhot this number is "8".
2. The zone of shorp focus, lhot is to soy, the neor ond for limits of the
"depth-of-field" for the picture token with fhis operture moy be determined
by reoding the set of figures on the Distonce Scole LJ
(5) directly under the poir of figures "8" on the
"Depth-of-Field Scole" (4).
3. To lllustrote : We ore ossuming thot the F-stop
number oppeoring on the Aperlure Scole is "8".
Reoding the two sets of figure on the Distonce
Scole (5) immediotely below the poir of figure
"8" on the Depth-of-Field Scole (4), we find the

numerol 17 under the reor figure "8". This meons thot onything folling between
qpproximotely 9.5 feet to lZ feet from the comero Toking Lens will be in 1
occeptobly shorp focus. Now, if the F-stop number hos been set of "22" Ihe
zone of shorp focus will be ony imoge folling inside the "depth-of-field" of
opproximotely 40 feet (the distonce figure under the forword "22" on the l
