www.butkus.us III. GENERAL INFORMATION
The Beseler Anolite 4OO utilizes o gollium orsenide phos-
phide photodetector in conjunction with IOO% solid
stote circuitry to provide o high degree of occurocy ond
reliobility, The instrument requires no wormup time, is
unimpoired by exposure to room lights, ond responds
ropidly to light reodings without exhibiting the "memory
effect" common to codmium sulfide detectors.
To get moximum benefit from your Anolite 4OO, you
should be os consistent os possible in your dorkroom
procedures. Alwoys develop your prints for the some
omount of time ond of the some temperoture, ond do
not exceed the copocity of your developing solution, Be
sure to turn off oll sofelights when toking reodings, os the t
photodetector, unlike most block ond white popers, is
sensitive to light of ony color. &
The instrument moy be powered by o 9 volt bottery or o
9 volt AC odopter When on AC odopter is connected to
the jock on the instrument, the power switch is outo-
moticolly bypossed ond the unit will remoin on for os
long os the odopter is plugged in,

IV. EXPOSURE DffERMINATION
SPOT METHOD (fixed f-stop)
  l. While holding exposure diol fixed, turn knob until or-
row points to ANSI number of the enlorging poper you
ore using, The diol should not be moved from this
point unless you chonge to o different ANSI poper
speed, A built-in stop is provided to prevent errone-
ous reodings from occurring, should there be too
much or insufficient light ovoiloble for the desired
ANSI poper speed, lf diol hits stop, be sure thot the
desired ANSI setting is not disturbed.

INTEGRATION METHOD www.butkus.us
When the negotive does not contoin o skin tone or other
suitoble reference, the integrotion method moy prove
odvontogeous. Londscopes, scenics, orchitecturol pic-

of photogroph which lend themselves well to this
method. The negotive should be of overoge tonolity
ond controst thot is, it should contoin o more or less
equolbolonce of light ond dork tones for this method to
work well.
After the projected imoge of the negotive hos been
composed ond focused to your sotisfoction, set the lens

GRADE" scole shown in Figure 1) ore brood indicotions of
the exposure ronges of vorious printing popers. A nego-
tive with very long density ronge (from deep blocks to
bright whites) will print best on grode #O or grode #t1.
Conversely, o negotive with o very short density ronge
(mostly groys, no blocks or whites) will print best on o

VII. DETERMINING ANSI SPEED
   FOR AN UNKNOWN PAPER
l. Moke o good print on the unknown poper Record
the exposure time (you will need to refer to this ex-
  posure time during step *3;,
2. Without chonging enlorger setting, position the Ano-
lite on the eosel so thot o highlight of the projected
imoge is folling onto the sensor Switch off dorkroom
   illuminotion including sofelights.
3. Rotote exposure diol so thot recorded exposure time
is ot diol index, Hold diol in ploce (using diol hondle)
while rototing control knob counterclockwise until in-'
   dicotor just goes on,
4. Reod ANSI poper speed of control knob orrow This is
the ANSI speed of the unknown poper.

VIII. COLOR PRINTING
Color printing requires o filter pock to "bolonce" the
color in the film to the color of the printing poper Gener-
olly speoking, once o sotisfoctory filter pock hos been
determined for ony given pockoge of color poper, thot
filter pock should remoin relotively constont for oll subse-
quent negotives (or tronsporencies) of the some brond
ond film type which were exposed under similor lighting
conditions ond which ore printed on the some pockoge
of color poper Any chonge in type of film, lighting condi-
tions or emulsion number of the color poper is likely to re'
quire o chonge in the filter pock.

The Beseler Anolite 4OO will determine the correct EX-
POSURE when printing from either color negotives or
color tronsporencies. lt will olso compensote for EX-
Fi POSURE chonges when chonging the filter pock or when
        oltering the mognificotion.
There ore no published ANSI speed numbers for color

ences, even two different pockoges of the some brond
ond type of color poper ore likely to hove somewhot dif-

     KNOWN PAPER.

It is sometimes desiroble to know the levelof illuminotion
