The BraunLite 510 usesa standardb1O-voltbattery
(EvereadyNo. 497,BrightStar blP, MallorypF 4gi or
similar).The batteryis not suppliedwith the unit but is
availableat most camerastores.
Place batteryconnectorblock,attachedto power pack
cable,on terminalend of battery,observingcorrect
pin-to-terminal                    *               and                            polarity.(No dangerif                    "                         "                           "-"
incorrectlypositioned,but the unitwill not operate).
Pressdown on connectorblockto break safetycoating
on batteryterminalsand secure it to batterywith
elasticbandssupplied.

Now, slip batteryinto case,with connectorblockon top,
and insertslackconnectingcable into spacenextto
battery.
                                                           lCAUTION: Power pack switchshould be in uoff,
positionwhen connectingor disconnectingbattery.Do                                                                                                   ,.jnot touch exposed battery terminals or contact pins
(after     removal from battery), or a severe electric shock                                                                                                                                                      llmay     result.

The BraunLite510can be assembledand usedin either
of two ways.

A. Flash Head on Grip Handle,mountedon Universal
Bracket, attached to camera tripod socket.

1. Slip f lashheadintoshoeon grip handleand secureit
by tighteningthe largeknurledscrew.

2. Push handlewith flash head attachedonto bracket       -
until handleclicksinto place.Handlecan be positioned
on bracketwith flash headfacing in any direction,

light.To detachhandle,depressbuttonnear its base
and pull up.Thisalsopermitsoff-cameraflashing.

3. Attach bracketto cameratripod socket,usingthe
largescrewsupplied.The bracketalsohasatripod
socketand thus can be mountedon a tripod insteadof
on the camera.(For carryingor storage,the bracket
can be attachedto the power pack.)

Slip f lashhead into cameraaccessoryshoe and tighten
knurledscrew.To removehead,simplyloosenknurled
screwand slideheadoff shoe.

                  Leaf-typeshutters,in general,can be set at any speed
                                                         r/rzooth                     for use with the BraunLite 5'10.The unit's
                secondf lashwill stop any subjectmotion,even at slow
                                           t/nslh                                      secondspeed or faster                   shutterspeeds.Use of
                        is recommended,however,to preventambientlight
                                   f rom affectingthe exposure,whichmay happenat
                 slowershutterspeeds.

                 With focal-planeshutters,the electronicf lashsetting
                  specified by the makershouldbe used.

                  On the backof the f lashheadare two ready-lights.
                          After the unit is switchedon and after eachf lash,the
                            lighton the leftwill go on f irst,usuallyin 2 to 3 seconds
                         with a f reshbattery.The unit can now be f lashed,but
                              will deliveronlyhalfits normallightoutput.Exposure
                      shouldbe adjustedaccordingly.
                                          lf the unitis not f lashed,the secondready-lightwill go
                      on a few secondslater.This indicatesthat the unit is
                              fully recycledand readyto delivera full-powerf lash.
                           Fullrecyclingtakesonly3 to 5 secondswith a f resh
                           battery.fr
                    The rectangularbuttonon the backof the f lashhead
                      enablesyou to f ire the f lashwithoutreleasingthe
                    camerashutter.lt is usedwith non-X-synchshuttersor
                            for multipleexposures,"paintingwith light,"etc.,as
                          well as for testingthe unit.

                      Exposurecalculatoron top of the f lashheadshows
                         lensaperturesettingsfor all f lash-to-subjectdistances
                            at a glance.Aperturesare markedat the top of the inner
                            dial,and distanceson the outerring.All you do is
                        presetthe calculatorfor the ASA ratingof the film in
                       yourcamera.This is done by rotatingthe innerdial until
                        the numbercorrespondingto the properASA ratingis                                                                                                                                                                                    fl
                        oppositethe blacktriangle.You can now readthe cor-      ,                           rect apertureoppositeeachflash-to-subjectdistance.F
                      Note that these settingsare valid onlywhenthe unit is
                     usedat f ull power,with normalbeam angle (see                                                     :lii,
                        oppositepage)and aimeddirectlyat the subject.                    j
                     Exoosureshouldbe doubledfor half-poweror wide-                       .,:

                      Pushingthe selectorforwardchangesthe beamto wideIe             angle80ocoverageand also,as a result,cutsthe light

                         therefore,shouldbe doubledwhenwide-beamsetting

                      By tiltingthe f lashhead up or down,you can bounce
i&                      the f lashoff the ceilingor f loorfor indirectlighting.
                        Sincethe tilt bracketis attachedto the f lashhead,this
                        techniquecan be usedwhetherthe head is mountedon
  *                        the handleor on the cameraitself.The head remains
                               in positionat whateverangle it is set, and clicksinto
                        place at the normal(horizontal)setting.Bounceflash
                         requires11/zlo2 stops largeraperturethan indicated
                        by the exposurecalculatorbecauseof the longerlight
                        path (flashhead-toceiling-tosubject).

                              Filterslots at the f ront of the f lashhead acceptgelatin
                           or acetatefilterswhichare easilytrimmedto f it. Filters
                    may be usedto changethe color temperatureof the
                                                 f lashto matchtungsten-typecolor films,createspecial
                           color effectsand preventover-exposurein closeups.
                   Rememberto increaseexposureby applicablefilter
                                                 f actor.

     FL 3OO           This extensionsharesthe powerof the main
                           unit,whosenormallightoutputis dividedevenlyamong
                        the total numberof f lashheadslinkedtogether.When
                        the maximumof three FL 300 extensionsis used,for
                     example,eachof them as well as the mainunit delivers
                                      '/r                              of the latter'slight output,The FL 300 has a 16-foott                   connectingcord.
    FZK800         Equippedwith its own capacitor,the FZK 800
                    augmentsthe light output of the main unit.Two of these
                      extensionsmay be connectedto the 510 unit,using
                           their attached16-footcords.

                   Use of extensions,of course,increasesthe normal
                       recyclingtime and reducesthe numberof f lashes
                       providedby the battery.
