www.butkus.us The Braun Lite RL 515 uses a standard RL 51O-volt battery (Eveready No. 497,Bright Star 5'!P, Mallory PF 497 or similar). The battery is not supplied with the unit but is available at most camera stores. Place battery connector block, attached to power pack cable, on terminal end of battery, observing correct pin-to-terminal " * " and "-" polarity. (No danger if incorrectly positioned, but the unit will not operate). Press down on connector block to break safety coating on battery terminals and secure it to battery with elastic bands supplied. Now, slip battery into case, with connector block on top, and insert slack connecting cable into space next to battery. CAUTION: Power pack switch should be in (off)) position when connecting or disconnecting battery. Do not touch exposed battery terminals or contact pins (after removal from battery), or a severe electric shock may result.View original page 9

The flash head, with its attached mounting bracket, can
be used on the grip handle or on the camera accessory
shoe. Tighten the large, knurled screw on the bracket
to secure the head in the desired position.
For.hand-held, off-camera f lashing, simply detach
the handle f rom the bottom bracket while depressing
the release button. The detached handle also fits the
encircling rings of conventional press camera brackets.View original page 11Page 13 · Read text

With the power pack cover open, plug the cord leading
f rom the f lash head into the receptacle on top of the
pack. Ne;<t, use the 18" synch cord stored under the
cover to connect the f lash head to the PC terminal on
camera or shutter. (Be sure to use the terminal "X"
if camera has more than one.) The two-prong plug of
this cord f its the receptacle on side of f lash head.
Longer synch cords and cords for use with cameras
having special synch terminals are available as
accessories.
After connecting both cords and closing the power pack
cover, f lick the switch on top of the power pack to "on',
position, and the unit is ready to operate.View original page 13Page 15 · Read text

Variable The switch on the back of the ff ash head f ets you vary
light output the light output of the RL b1b. For f ull power, .lid" th"
switch down to the f ull-circle symbol O; for reduced
power' slide it up to the halfcirtle symbol .,. Reduced-
power operation requires a lens aperture approximately
1 f-stop larger than full-power, but also reduces the
recycling time between flashes to a mere 2 seconds.
Variable The beam angle can be set for either normat 600 or
beam angle wide-angle g0o coverage. lt is adjusted by means of the
two sliding studs on either side of the bracket iust
below the f lash head. For normal coverage, slide both
backward to the @ symbol; for wide-angr6 coverage,
forward to the @ symbol. Both studs r*t be moved at
the same time to avoid damaging the flash tube!
The wide-angle setting requires a lens aperture one
f-stop larger than the normal-angle beam.
with full- and reduced-power settings prus normal and
wide-angle adjustments, the RL 51b provides a choice
of four light levels:

" Tilting flash head You can tilt the head upward to 90o, downward to 4bo
and to in-between positions by simply pushing it in the
desired direction.
Rotating grip No need to hand-hold the RL 515 in order to bounce the
handle f lash off the wall. Simply lift the handle off the bottom
bracket while depressing the release button, turn it
untilthe head faces in the desired direction, and
replace it on the bracket. Handle and bracket interlock
at 30o intervals.

Determining The calculator on top of the f lash head provides direct
correct exposure exposure readings for f ull-power operation with normal
beam angle. Rotate the milled ring untilthe triangular
index mark is opposite the number corresponding to
the ASA rating of your film. You can now read the lens
aperture on the upper part of the inner dial opposite
the applicable flash-to-subject distance. This is the
total distance traveled by the light, not necessarily
the distance for which the camera is focused - unless the flash head is attached to the camera and aimed
directly at subject.
Example: You are using ASA 64 f ilm, at a flash-to-subject
distance of 10 feet. The RL 515 is set for f ull power and
normal 600 beam. When the number64 is aligned with
the triangle, the calculator shows the correct
aperture for '10 feet to be f 11.
In this example, if you were shooting with reduced
power, you would increase the aperture to f8. Using the
wide-angle beam, you would increase the aperture
one f-stop in either case - to f8 or f5.6, respectively.
Note that the calculator shows exposure for average-
size rooms with light-colored walls. Very large rooms
may require more exposure, small rooms may
require less.View original page 18Page 19 · Read text

What shutter Leaf-type (betwee n-the-lens) sh utte rs with X-synch
speed to use may be set to any speed. lt is advisable, however,
to shoot at1/125th or 1/250th second to prevent other
light sources f rom affecting the exposure.
Focal plane shutters must be used at the setting
prescribed by the camera manufacturer, usually 1/30th
on the to 1/60th second and marked "X" or,,l "

Flring the flash You have connected the power and synch cords,
selected light output and beam angle. All that's left to
do is to switch the RL 515 on, by f lipping the switch on
the capacitor unit to (on>. To f lash it, release the
camera shutter or use the open-flash button, but not
until the ready-light glows.
After you have f inished shooting, turn the unit off by
flipping the switch to "off".View original page 20Page 23 · Read text

This button, located on the bottom of the f lash head,
enables you to f lash the unit without releasing the
camera shutter. You can use it to make multiple flash
exposures, "paint with light" to illuminate large areas,
and make f lash shots with cameras lacking X-synch.
The shutter, of course, must be set to "Bo or "T"
and held open for the exposure. The open-f lash button
also serves for testing the unit.View original page 23Page 25 · Read text

FL 3OO This extension shares the power of the main
unit, whose normal light output is divided evenly among - the total number of flash heads linked together. When
the maximum of three FL 300 extensions is used, for
example, each of them as well as the main unit delivers
1/t oI the latter's light output. The FL 300 has a 1 6-foot
connecting cord.
FZK 800 Equipped with its own capacitor, the FZK 800
augments the light output of the main unit. Two of these
extensions may be connected to the RL b1b unit, using
their attached 16-foot cords.
Use of the FZK 800 extensions, of course, increases the
normal recycling time and reduces the number of
f lashes provided by the battery.

FZ-l Photocell This electric-eye "slave" transforms
any electronic flash unit into a wireless "remote" unit.
Triggered by the f lash of the main unit, the FZ-\
