LCD Displays
ln time,tlie cimera'slCD paheldisplayandthe LCDdisplayin the
viewfindermayfade and becomedifficultto read.lf this happens,haveit
replaced(at cost)by a CanonServiceCenter.
At low temperatures,the LCD displayresponsemay becomeslower.And
at 60'C or highertemperatures,the displaymayblacken.ln eithercase,
the displaywillreturnto normalat roomtemperature.
Lithium Batteries
(1) The cameraoperateson two CR123A(or DL123A)lithiumbatteries.
Checkthe batterylevelin the followingcases(-+page16):
. Afterreplacingthe batteries.
. Afternot usingthe camerafor an extendedperiod.
. The shutterstopsworking.
. The camerais beingusedin a low-temperatureenvironment.
. You will be shootingan importantevent.
(2) Beforeinstallingthe batteries,wipethe batterycontactsto removeany
fingerprintsand smudges.This is to preventfaultyconnectionsand
corrosion.
(3) Neverdisassembleor rechargethe batteries.Also,neverstorea
batteryin high.temperatureplacesor shortcircuitthe batterycontacts
or toss a batteryintoa fire.
(4) Althoughthe batteriesworkwell evenat low temperatures,battery
performancemaydeclineslightlyat freezingtemperatures.In sucha
case,keepsparebatterieswarm in a pocket,etc.,and use and warm
the batteriesalternately.
How Low Battery Levels Affect Camera Operation
On the LCDpanel,if the <cl> iconblinksor it is notdisplayed,a proper
exposurecanstillbe obtainedas longas the shutterreleases.However,when
the batterylevelis low,film advanceand autorewindmightstop midwayor
notworkat all and <fl> mayblinkon the LCDpanel.Afterthe batteriesare
replacedwithnewones,filmadvancewillbe possibleandfilmrewindwill
resumewhenyou pressthe <O:r> buttonfor at least1 sec.
Lens Electrical Contacts ,
Afterdetachingthe lensfromthe camera,put on the
lenscapsor put downthe lenswith the rearend up
to avoidscratchingthe lenssurfaceand electrical
contacts.

Check the batterylevel after replacingthe batteriesand before using the
camera.
Turn the Command Dial to a
shooting mode.
. The camerawill then turn on and the

Ea : Battery level OK. "6";fr c! : The batterylevel is low. Keep
spare batterieshandy.

. Pressingthe shutter button halfway for a prolongedperiod or operatingonly the
autofocuswithout taking a picturewill still consume battery power. lt will reduce
the number of rolls that can be taken with the batteries.

Mounting and Detachinga Lens ffi
Mounting a Lens
Remove the caps.
. Remove the rear lens cap and the
camera body cap.
Mount the lens.
. Align the red dots on the lens and
camera and turn the lens as shown
by the arrow until it snaps in place.
On the lens, set the focus mode
switch to <AF>.
. lf the focus mode switch is set to
<MF> (or .M> on olderlenses),
autofocuswill not operate and < EEf>
will be displayedon the LCD panel.
Remove the front lens cap.
Detachingthe Lens
While pressingthe lens release
button, turn the lens as shown by
the arrow.
. Whenthe reddot on the lensis at the
top,removethe lens.

How the ShutterButtonWorks
The EOS camera'sshutterbutton can be depressedhalfwayor all the way.
There is a click stop at the halfwaypoint.
Pressing the Shutter Button Halfway or Completely
The shutterbuttonworks as describedbelow.
When it is pressed halfway:
. Autofocusingis activated,and when
focus is achieved,the beeper sounds
and the in-focusindicator< O > on the
viewfinder'slower right also lights.
. Also, the shutterspeed and aperture
are set and displayedon the LCD
panel and in the viewfinder.
When it is pressed completely:
. The shutter is releasedto take the
pictureand the film advancesby one
f rame.
0 ft an Extenderis used and the maximum apertureof the lens becomes smaller
than f/5.6 (largerf-number),autofocusingwill not operate.
E Ct*era movement during the moment of exposure is called camera shake.
Camera shake can cause blurred pictures.To prevent blurred picturesdue to
camera shake:
' Hold the camera steady (+page 22).
' Use the center of your finger to touch the shutter button, grasp the camera with
your entire right hand, then press the shutter button gently.

Loading Film
After you load the film, the camerafirstwinds the entireroll onto the
camera'stake-upspool.With DX-codedfilm,the camera automaticallysets
the film's ISO speed.Then each time a pictureis taken,one frame of film is
rewoundback into the film cartridge.
Turn the Command Dial to any
setting except < CED>.

Insert the film cartridge at an
angle as shown in the illustration.

Pull the edge of the film leader to
the orange mark on the camera.
. Hold down the film cartridgewhile

. lf the edge of the film leadergoes
beyondthe orangemark, rewindsome
of the film back intothe cartridge.
Orange mark
Wrong Close the camera back.
. After checkingthat the film leader
edge is correctlyalignedwith the
orange mark, close the camera back.
'After you close the camera back, the
film will startwindingon the take-up
spool and the frame counterwill
count up. The camerawill then make
a shutter-releasesound and the
.@> icon and total frame count will
be displayed.
' Duringthe film'sprewind,the ISO
speed is displayedon the LCD panel.

lO . In hot and humid environments,do not remove the film packaginguntil you are
ready to load the film
. The shuttercurtains have been manufacturedat very high precision.Never
touch them with your fingers.When loadingfilm, do not touch or damage the
curtainswith your fingers or film.

the shutterwill not work. Reload the film cartridgeproperly.(*+page 20) . lf the film is not DX-coded,set the ISO speed manually.(-+page 58) ff
. Infraredfilm cannot be used with this camera.
UnloadingFilm
Afterthe film'slastframeis exposed,the camerarewindsthe film automatically.
After the film's last frame is exposed,the
camera rewindsthe film automatically.
There will be a shutter-releasesound
and then only the <@t icon will be
displayedon the LCD panel.Make sure
this icon is displayed,then open the
cameraback and unloadthe film.

To rewindthe film in midroll,followthe procedurebelow.
M Turn the Command Dial to <Q:1>.

load a new roll of film, the new roll'sfilm leaderwill only be rewoundinto the film
cartridge.To prevent this, close the camera back and press the shutter button
completelybefore loadinga new roll of film.

ln the Basic Zone modes, if you pop-upthe built-flashbeforehand,it will fire
automaticallyunder low-lightor backlitconditions.In the CreativeZone
modes,you can pop up the built-inflash and fire the flash at any time
regardlessof the ambient light level.To retractthe flash head, push it down
by hand.

AF-Assist Beam
When the camera has difficultyfocusing,the AF-assistbeam illuminates
the subjectto aid focusing.The AF-assistbeam operatesin the Basic Zone
and CreativeZone modes.

. lf an EOS-dedicated,externalSpeedlite(soldseparately)is attachedto the
camera,the Speedlite'sbuilt-inAF-assistlampwilllightinstead.

. lf the camerahasdifficultyfocusingthe subject,the AF-assistbeamwillbe
emittedby the cameraor external,EOS-dedicatedSpeedlite.
Single-frameand Continuous Shooting
The film advancemode (singleor continuous)when the shutterbuttonis
held down is set automaticallyby the respectiveshootingmode.
The film advance mode set by the respectiveshootingmode is shown in
the "FeatureAvailabilityTable"on page 70.
