PHOTOGRAPHY INDOORS
It is easy now to take pictures in the house with either flash bulbs or
photo, flood lamps. The flash bulbs are best suited for subjects that will not
hold still and in places where one does not have acce, ssto electricity. The
2ic bulb will light satisfactorily from 12 to 15 feet, while the lic bulb covers
an area of about from B to I 0 feet.
The Photoflood lamp, which resembles in size a 60,watt larnp, actually
has the effectiveness of a 7J0 to 1000,watt lamp for picture, taking.
FIow to (Jse the New Photoflood Lamp
For best results, place the lamp in a reflector unit especially designed for it.
When no refl.ectors are used, three or four times as many lamps or three to
four times the exposure will be needed. When ready, turn on the lamp, open
the shutter for the length of time suggested by the table, close the shutter
and turn off the lamp. As many good pictures can be made during the two,
hour life of this lamp as your speed of operation permits.

INTERIOR EXPOSURE CALCULATOR
FOR INCANDESCENT LIGHTING
Here is a new type exposure calculator
especially developed exclusively for use
wilh artificial lighting. Never before has c anything of this description been mar' 7s
keted. Four features are to be specially noted:
1. It indicates the proper stop opening to use with
Photoflash lamps.
2. With Photoflash lamps, the proper exposure may
be determined in advance, so that lamps need be
turned on only for actual exposure' thus greatly
lengthening their life.
3. It may be used for either stills or movies.
4. It is scientifically accurate. (This is more than may
be said for many expensive exposure meters when
Sbe 21/zx3Yz used with artificial light.)
CENTRAL FLASH REFLECTOR 95C
This flash reflector made very strong
and will stand a great deal of abuse. It
comes complete with battery. The Cen'
tral is small and compact, fits into small
space for traveling. Has safety catch on
flash button so that no accidental flashes
will occur. www.orphancameras.comView original page 15Page 16 · Read text

MODERN EXPOSURE METERS
The modern exposure meter has developed to such an extent that it w-ill absolutely
eliminate any guess work in calculating the time of exposure. The majority of photo,
graphic failures are due to incorrect exposure setting and it is very dificult to estimate
the proper exposure because the eye is most sensitive to the red and yellow rays while
photographic film is most sensitive to the blue "rays. Thus, under ccnditions that
appear brightest to the eye, the light may be very poor photographically. The use
of any modern exposure meter will be of great assistance in assuring more correctly
exposed negatives.
There are various types of meters available. First, the Chart Form which calculates
the exposure thru consideration of the various factors that enter into the determination
of proper exposure, including: type of subject, condition of light, and time of day.
The Quick,Set exposure meter and Practical Exposure disk are excellent examples
and the best known of the chart type of meters. These work on the slide rule principle
and give very accurate results when used outdoors, being formulated from thousands
of exposures under widely varied conditions.
A second type of exposure meter is the Optical Wedge meter with which the subject
is viewed thru a blue glass and graduated disk which varies from full transparency to
extreme opacity. the meter being adjusted to a point where the high lights are darkened
to a degree approximating the shadows. When this point has been reached, the
exDosure is automaticallv indicated.
The foremost example of this type exposure meter is the Zeiss, lkon Diaphot. With
this meter the user determines when the proper comparative densities of high lights
and shadows have been reached by means of a knurled ring which rotates the optical
wedge in the meter. These are excellent for general outdoor use and the blue viewing
glass provides a means for balancing the composition as it acts as a viewing filter.
The third type of exposure meter is that commonly called the Extinction meter.
This is of the visual type which is pointed towards the subject and the amount of
reflected light from the subiect is measured by the brilliance of the visual 6e1d in the
Exposure meter which is usually in the shape of numbers or letters of varying density.
Of this type of meter, the Instoscope, Lios,Scop, and Bewi are the best known
examples. With the exception of the more recent photo, electric cell type of exposure
meter. the extinction meters are the best and most accurate, being very popular because
of their wide range of adaptability under both good and poor lighting conditions.
They can be used equally well in day light or artificial light and because of their
extreme accuracy and simplicity of operation, the correct exposure is quickly and
easily obtained with great rapidity. Only about ten to twenty seconds are required to
make an accurate reading and the personal element of fallibility is almost entirely
eliminated.
The most recent development in the exposure meter field is that type of meter
which makes use of a photo, electric cell. With this meter a reading is given auto,
matically by a pointer which is actuated by current generated when light strikes the
sensitive photo, electric cell. Heretofore, these cells have been used for measuring
light values in laboratories and by electrical companies in commercial establishments
for inany years, but it has only been within the past couple of years that they have
placed on the market especially designed for photographic purposes.
The Weston is the most widely used of this type of instrument and the one most
universally applicable. These photo, electric meters are the simpiest of all to operate, it
merely being necessary to point the meter at the subject and reading the exposure
frorn a dial. Obviously, because of the elimination of the personal element which is
present in all other types of exposure meters to a greater or lesser degree, the photo,
electric type more nearly approaches perfection than any meter yet conceived.
At one time professional photographers considered exposure meters an artifice and
relied solely upon past experience in determining their exposures but now they invari,
ably use one or another of the modern prccision instruments available because they
have come to realize from experience that it is impossible to obtain consistently good
results with any degree of uniformity by mere guess work and the exposure meter
offers the only solution to their problem.View original page 18Page 19 · Read text
