When using o foke-up spool in the EXAKTA
500 it is not necessory to trim the beginning
of the film to ony speciol shope. Any shope
of leqder con be used, eilher lhe normql
norrow fongue or (even better) o sf roighi
cut-ocross end, e. g. when using bulk fi lm.
When using o foke-up cosselte, the begin-
ning of the fi lm must be cut fo fil lhe core
of ihe cossetfe spool.

Operoting fhe shulfer
1. The ropid-wind lever (il) both tensions the
shuller ond winds on lhe film. Afler foking

The shutter lensioning ond film lronsporl ore
coupled lo prevenl double exposures ond
blqnk fromes. For lhis reqson il is impossible to
operole lhe ropid-wind lever (11) before lhe
shuller hos been releosed. Similorly, fhe shuller
connot be releqsed until lhe fi lm hos been qd-
vonced ond fhe shutter tensioned complefely;

be ploced on o firm supporf (foble, woll, etc.) or
on o lripod.
When using the T sefting, lenses wiih fully-
oufomolic diophrogms should be set for monuol
operlure operof ion, or olherwiselhe diophrogm
will open premofurely. See lhe speciol in-
slrucfions on poges 1g-19 for use with fhe
Domiplon 2.8150 mm lens.
lf is olso possible to toke deloyed-oclion ex-
posur€s. A seporole selftimer releose (obfoin-
qble from photogrophic deolers) con either be
ofloched fo lhe coble releose or screwed inio
the body shuller releose bulton (17) or fhe
releose mechonism (3) on lhe lens.

Adjusting the lens
Diophrogm releose mechonism (3)
1. The operlure volue (fiNo) is odiusled by I
meons of the operture setting ring (4). Turn
this ring unf il lhe desired f/No on lhe operlure Deplh-of-field scole (6)

The smoller operfure numbers e.g. f 2, 2.8, Aperlure setling ring (4)

ings: lhese permif brief exposures (fost shuller
speeds), buf give only shollow depth of field.
The lorger operlure numbers, e. g. 16, 22,
indicofe relofively smoll diophrogm openings
requiring longer exposure limes (slower
shulter speeds), buf giving greot depth of field.

engoged, the diophrogm should be fully opened

Fresnel lens wilh microprism field
Where fhe EXAKTA 500 fitled wilh o Fresnel
lens, lhe cenlrolly ploced molf ring, which does
nol hove lhe line sfructure of lhe remoining
field, is moinly used for ground-gloss focusing.
To increose f he occurocy of focusing, o micro-
prism is cenf ered in f his ring. The exf ro brillionl
imoge visible in this pollerned field serves for
focusing in lhe some woy os lhe imoge on f he
ground-gloss screen, except thot with fhe
microprism, incorrecl focusing will resull in on
imoge which is blurred fo o greofer degree.
Focusing is, lherefore, eosier, fosfer, ond more
occurofe. The lens will be correclly focused
when lhe imoge in lhe microprism is ot ils
shorpesl. ll is, however, obsolutely essenfiol lo
focus wilh o lorge operture, os wif h operlures
of f 5.6 ond smoller, fhe imoge in f he micro-
prism field will oppeor relolively shorp, even
with lhe lens incorreclly focused. This, of
course, will leod fo unsofisfoclory results.
