To open and Io& the camera-badr
Pull out button (1) and turn  it either to the left or the right
until it snaps into position. Open camera-back  (40). When
closing the camera, press ba& (a0) lightly towards camera
body. Turn button (1) clockwise or anticlockwise until  it
lodrs in its neutral position.  II the badr is to be separated
from the camera, extract the pin (19a) and the badt (40)
will become disengaged.
To open and close the waist-level Finder-Hood
Press catdr (16) and the hood opens automatically into
position. - In order to close the hood (11), Iold down the
side-walls, the back-wall (15) and finally the front cover. Press
until it clicks in. When ihe Finder Hood is closed, the shutter
cannot be released!
Shulter and lilm lransporl
are coupled so that there is no danger o[ unintended double
exposures. Winding the lever (6) winds up shutter and
transport iilms. Swing the shutter release guard aside. The
shutter is released by pressing the release knob (3). Always
wind lever (6) as Iar as it will go and let it spring ba&
slowly. II lever (6) is not wound Iully, then it cannot return
to its neutral position and it is impossible to release ! The
image is visible on rellex groundglass only alter shutter
has been wound. Do not push badr the lilm transport
lever (6) by using force, otherwise the medranism will be
danraged. Catch the lever (6) in its bad<ward rotation with
your thumb. Between exposures swing shuiter release
guard (3a) over shutter release knob.
To set the shutter speeds
Fast speeds fuom rf2s to Lltwsec.: Lilt knob (8) either betore
or alter windind the shutter, turn it in the direction ol the
arrow so that the exposure time required comes to be opposite

the index mark on the knob center, and let knob (8) drop
 badr. The engraved figures indicate lractions of seconds.
 so e. g. 25 means 1/25 sec. etc.
 Time exposures.. Set buiton (8) on "T" or "B".  - "1','  :  Shutter will open upon pressure of release knob (B) and
 by seeond pressure it closes again. - "8":    Shutter  lvill
 remain open as long as release knob (B) is presserl.
 SIow speeds lrom  rf ssec. lo 72 sec.: Wind shutter and set last
 speed knob (8) on "T" or "I1". Now wind slow speed
 knob (17) clodtwise as far as it will go (winding up slor,v speecl
 medranism). Lilt outer rim ol slow speed knob (12), turn it
 until the required speed marh in black is opposite the
 i'dex mark on the knob center, and let outer rim drop back.
 Delayed-action release (sel|-ti mer)  :
 a) SIow shutter speeds lrom  rf 5 sec. to 6 sec... proceed as
    described above, but bring required speed mark in red
    opposite index mark.
 b) Fasl shutter speeds lrom.tf25 to llrcoosec... Set fast speed
   knob (8) to the speed required (e. g. r/roo      ihen
   wind slow speed knob (17) as describeC above,"ec.).  and,
    lilting it, turn it any speed in red against inclex marli.
 lVo/e: Bladi ligures of the slorv speed knob (12) will give
      immediate exposure, on the red ones exposure
'f i';-   takes place aiter a delay ol about 12sec. (self-timer).
A cable release can be screwed into the shutter r.elcase
 knob (3).
 Lenses and locusing
The camera lenses (25) are interciangeable: press lens
 cat& (27) (F-ig. a) towards lens, turn lens to ihe left until the
red marks on camera and lens (21 and 26) come to lie
opposite eadr other, and the lens can be liiied lrom the                                              lr
camera body. - To instal a lens, the procedure is reversed.

 figures lying against the aperture required indicate the extent
 of sharpness to the for-eground ancl to the background.





The stop ring_ of pre-se/ diaphragm lenses has adjustable
clidi stops. With most lenses the milled ring behind the
cliaphragm stop scqle has to be pushed towards the camera
and     _the stop ring turned until the aperture ligure requirecl
lor the exposure comes to lie opposite the red dot. Then
let the milled ring spring bad<. No."v it is possible to view
and locus s1 f,ull aperture. Immediately belore releasing -
and without rhanging the taking position of the         -turn the stop ring as far as it will go, i. e. up to the"urn"ru"preset
diaphragm" stop. Whcn using other types ol lenses,

The Penta Prism Viewiinder
with the p_rism viewiinder the camera is held at eye-level
and provides a laterally correct, upright imagi f;; ;;th
vertical and horizontal shots, and therefore it"is icleal io,
               fa-stsport    and             speed                    photography.                           As                                      the                                              direction                                                            of                                              -o"u_        thement in            linder                       is the                        same-as-that                                            of                                          the                                                 subject,                                                                                              it is                                                   easy
to follow moving subjects by moving the cameri in the same
direction, even in cases of extreme speuds (-otor*ur;;;).
The Penta Prism is installed inkr and .e-orr"d J;-ift
camera the same way as the Finder Hood, but it ao",
possess a shutter-lod<ing lever t101. A Special eyepiece"otisavailable lor it as an accessory.

To load the eamera
The EXAKTAVX takes standard 35mm lilm in cartridges oi
36 and 20 exposures. Open camera badr and pull out
rewinding knob [37). Insert the cartridge with iresh film into
Iilm dramber [39). Push badr rqwinding knob [37J by pressing
its rim towards camera and turning it at the same time. Care
must be taken that the central part (38J [Fig.   ) ol rewinding
knob is not pushed in ! Make sure that the iilm runs parallel
along the lilm tracks [32] to the take-up spool (29) in the
iilm chamber (30), with the emulsion side towards the lens,
and push leader of Iilm underneath ihe spring tongue ol
the take-up spool (29J. ft is also possible to remove the
take-up spool [29J from the camera in order to lix the lilm
 to it. When replacing take-up spool (29J care must be taken
 that the fork of the film transport lever (6) engages the
 recessed end of the center ol the spool. The perloration of
the lilm should engage properly the teeth ol the lilm
spro&ets (31). Close camera badr. Now two blind exposures
must be made: wind Iilm transport lever (6) as lar as it will
go and release shutter (First blind shot). Wind lever (6)
again and release again (Second blind shot). Wind lever (6)
a third time and the first unexposed lrame is brought into
position into the iilm gate (33). The exposure counter (5)
is set by turning the knob (5 a) with the index-linger in tho
direciion ol the arrow until the siroke preceding "1'o comes
to be opposite the indicator. (The exposure counter disc
advances after the exposure  t)
The camera is ready now lor picture taking. - lnstead ol the
take-up spool (29) a take-up cassette (an empty cartridge)
may be inserted into the film dramber(30). Fix lilm leader to

the spool and insert cassette so that the iork oI the lilm
          transport                    lever(6)                           engages                                               the                                   with                                           recessed                                                   end                                                                         ol the                                                               centertl         of            the spool.                 The                             iitm must                               be                                wound                                            with                                                     the                                                        emulsion
           side inwards. The control disc (1g) permits to observe whether
          the film is transported properly. It turns as long as the spool
        oI the feeder cartridge rotates. _ With ttre titm_.i""d
          indicator (18) you record the type oI film the camera
          is loaded with: BW:  bladr-and-white
                     black C :  color, outdoors
                   red C:  color, indoors
       By turning the ring (18) the respective letter is set against
        the film speed number engraved on camera top plate.
       To unload the camera
       Even after exposing 86 frames one or two more exposures
       can be made, until the film transport lever (6) cannot be
       wound any more. When using the take_up spool (2g). it is
        necessary to rewind the exposed film into the cartridge: liit
         reversing lever (Z), push in central part (Bg) of rewinding
        medranism (37) press button (7) and hold it down, and turn
         outer rim oi (BZ) clockwise. As long as the film is being
       rewound the control disc (1g) and the srotted axle of the
          film transport lever (6) will rotate. with rewinding iinished
        the slotted axle (6) stops turning. Button (Z) springs badr
          to its original position when pressure is relaxed, *ho"upon
        the camera is ready for advancing the next section oI iilm.
     Now open camera, pull rewinding knob (87) outwards and
       remove the cartridge with the exposed iilm. push back
        rewinding knob (37) by pressing  iis rim towards the camera. -
       Should the lilm transport lever (6) stop midway and refuse

        to move further, as there is no lilm lelt in the cartridge,
       press button (7) - as described - and complete winding
       film transport lever (6) until  it stops and let it go back to
         its normal position.
     When using a take-up cassette there is need lor rewinding.
      As soon as all the lilm is used up, the lilm transport lever (G)
        will refuse to operate. Now cut oil the lilm with the built-in
        Iilm cutting knile (34): unscrew milled knob (35) and pull rt
       out as far as it will go (about 7rl2in.'). Then push knob (35)
       back and screw  it in again. Before opening the camera, make
       two blind exposures so that the tail of the lilm will go into the
       take-up cassette. - The procedure is the same when partly
      exposed film has to be removed from the camera in a
       take-up cassette.

       Flash contact sodrels
      The EXAKTA VX is iully syndrronized for regular flashbulbs
      and electnrnic ilash.
     An EXAKTA Flashgun using Ilashbulbs is available. Instrue-
       tion booklet is enclosed with the gun. When using regular
       flashbulbs (OSRAM, PF.IILIPS, SYLVANIA) the flashgun
      connecting cord is plugged into the "M" pair oI contact
      so&ets (20) on the left hand lront wall ol the camera (below
      slow speed knob 17). Attention, the shutter must be
    wound up ! Details when "X" contact sochets (28) must be
      used, will be found in a special leaflet. - Electronic flash-
       tubes can be released with speeds oi 1/56sec. ormore.In this
      case the connecting cort must be plugged in into the "X"
      pair ol contact sodiets (28) on the right hand side of the
     camera lront wall, below the iast speed knob (8).
