Rellectedlight reading.Whenyou point the PIL0T-2(with
honeycomblensuncovered)fromthe camerapositiontowards
the scene,it measuresthe light reflectedby all partsof the
scene,strikesan averageand indicatesa suitableexposure.
And,normally,the exposureindicatedby suchan overallre-
flectedlight readingis perfectlycorrect.
lf the scenecontainsstrongcontrastsin brightnessor color,
it is preferableto measurethat part of the scenewhichre-
quiresthe mostaccurateexposure.For negativefilms,this is
usuallya darkerareawhichis to showdetailin the finalblack-
and-whiteor color print, whereasfor color slidesor movie
filmsthe lighterareasare.usuallyfavored.To measuresuch
importantareas, get closerto the subjectbut not so closethat
yourown shadowor that of the PILOT-2fallson the subject.
Suchclose-upreadingsare especiallyappropriateif an impor-
tant darker subject is backlightedor when an important
brightersubjectis againsta darkbackground.
0r, insteadof takinga close-upreadingif the subjectis in-
accessible,you may takea substitutereadingby pointingthe
meterat a nearbysubjectwhichreceivesthe sameillumination
as the actualscene, andwhichis similarto the subject.(Your
own handor ski parkaor a nearbyflower, for instance.)

Incidentlight reading.The mostconvenientway to determine
exposurefor scenescontainingextensivebrightor darkareas
is by meansof an incidentlightmeasurement.Simplyslidethe
diffuseroverthe honeycomblensby pushingup the lever(8)
and point the meter, from the subjectposition, towardthe
camera.0r, if the subjectis too lar away, point the meter
towardsthe camerafrom a positionwhichreceivesthe same
light.Thus,insteadof havingt0 measureindividualareasof
the scene, you measurethe actuallightfallingon the scene
and your PILOT-2will indicatethe correctexposureto take
careof contrasts.

that no lightfalls 0n the honeycomblensduringthe adjust-
