Picture Taking Settings
Your Century 35 Camera incorporates a new simplified
EV system of camera settings whereby a single number
value may be set to determine exposure instead of using
the traditional / and shutter speed numbers. At the front
of the shutter you will find three rows of numbers and two
rotating rings. The numbers on the black ring are EV
numbers (1, the lowest; 77, the highest).
The black numbers on the first bright ring are shutter
                                        speed numbers (B, L, I12,714,718, 1/15, 1/30, 7160, L1725,
11250, 1/500). Shutter speed controls the length of time
that light will pass through the lens and is useful in stop-
ping action as well as in controlling exposure. (When set
at B the shutter will open when the trip button is held
down and will close when it is released.) Always use a tri-
pod or some other steady support and a cable release when
using this setting to prevent camera motion.
The next row of black numbers are / numbers and refer
to lens diaphragm openings which are useful in controlling
depth of field (area of sharpness) as well as the amount
of light which will pass through the lens-/2 is the largest
                                        opening and /16 the smallest.

   Conventional Lens Settings
If you are setting the lens and diaphragm by the familiar
shutter speeds and lens diaphragm openings, first set the
shutter speed using the black ring; turn it until the de-
sired shutter speed is opposite the index line on the lens
barrel next to the camera. Then turn the black ring again
generally in the opposite direction until the desired /
number is set opposite the index line.

EV Settings
If using EV numbers from a meter or
exposure table with these numbers,
turn the black ring until the correct
number on it is opposite the index mark
of the front of the lens barrel. Remem-
ber that each higher EV number halves
the exposure and each lower number
doubles it. 10 produces half as much
exposure as 9 and twice as much as 11.
If more depth of field is required,
turn the knurled chrome ring between
the shutter speed and diaphragm
scales until a smaller diaphragm open-
ing such as /16 is opposite the index
line. The shutter speed will change
correspondingly so that the same ex-
posure will be maintained; you will
note now that the shutter is set for a
slower speed such as 1/30 second. Con-
versely, if more action is to be stopped,
rotate the bright knurled ring to the
desired shutter speed. The lens open-
ing will automatically change to com-
pensate, thereby maintaining the l'bkt,

Depth of Field
The depth of field scale indicates how
many feet in front and back of the sub-
ject will be in acceptably sharp focus.
This depth of field varies with the dia-
phragm settings. Example: If the cam-
era is focused at 10 ft. and the dia-
phragm is set at f5.6, material between
8 ft. and 15 ft. will be in acceptably
sharp focus.
For convenience, the number 15 is in
red, indicating "universal" focus. Un-
der average picture taking conditions
(/11), subject material from 8 ft. to
50 ft. from the camera will be in ac-
ceptably sharp focus.

Making the Picture
