Getting Started
Thissectiondescribeshow you prepareyour
Hasselblad203FEfor use.You willfindcom-
prehensiveinformationhow to operate the
camera in the sectionstartingon page 18.
Followthe instructionsstep by step to avoid
jamming or damagingthe camera. Always
keep the rear protectivecover on to protect
the shutter cuftain when the magazine is
detachedl
Battery
The battery comparlment and cassette is
locatedin the lowerfonryardcorneron the left
hand side of the camera body. Pull out the
cassette and install the battery - 6V type
PX28Lor equivalent- accordingto the mark-
ing on the cassette.Pushthe cassetteallthe
way back into the compartment.
Cocking the Camera
Cock the cameraafter installingthe battery.
Fold out the windingcrankon the righthand
side, press the button in the center of the
crank and rotateit clockwiseone turn until it 'Double locks (Cf. page 20, exposure').
Front Protective Cover
the front protectivecover is attachedto the
lens bayonetmount. Rotateit counter-clock-
wise and lift it out of the mount.
Attaching the Lens
Remove the lens' rear protectivecover by
rotatingit counter-clockwiseand lifting it off
the lens.

Checkthat boththe cameraand the lensare

marksfor the camera drive shaft (top) and
thelensdriveshaft(bottom).lf the lens is not
cockedyou can insert a coin or a similar
objectin the slot and turn the shaft in the
directionof the arrowapprox.415of a f ullturn.
Youwillfindthat holdingthe camerabodyin
yourleft handand the lens in your righthand
as shown in the illustration(top, right)is the
easiestway to attach the lens.
Whenyou have alignedthe red indexon the
lenswith that on the camerabody as shown
inthe illustration,the lenswillfit easilyintothe
bayonetmount.You can then rotate it clock-
wiseuntilit stopswith a faintclickas the lens
locksin place.
Removingthe Lens
Depress the lens catch button, rotate the
lens counter-clockwiseand lift it out of the
bayonetmount.
NOTE: You can only attach and remove
the lenswhenthe camerais cocked(fully
wound) and not in pre-releasedmode
(see page 20).

Rear Protective Cover
Depressthe catch, tilt the cover backwards
and lift it off.
Always keep the rear protectivecover on to
protect the shutter curtain when the maga-
zine is detached!
Attaching the Magazine
Ensure that the magazineslide is fully in-
sertedand that the magazinestatusindicator
is white.lf the indicatoris red,then followthe
instructionson page9. Restthemagazineon
the magazinesupportswith the supportlugs
properlyengagingthe recessesin the maga-
zine bottom.Carefullyswing the magazine
towardsthe camerabody,checkingthat the
magazinehooksfit intothe slotsin the maga-
zine. Push the magazinegently but firmly
againstthe hookswhileslidingthe magazine
catch to the right.
Releasethe buttonwhenthe magazinemakes
contactwith the camera body and then push
the button to the left to ensure that it has
reached the locked position.Remove the
slide to positivelylock the magazineto the
camera body.

Removingthe Magazine
It is advisableto havethe camerafullywound
and the magazinestatus indicatorshowing
white.lf the indicatorshows red, then follow
the instructionsbelow.
Insertthe magazineslide fully and with the
hingetowardsthe front of the camera.
Slidethe magazinecatchto the right,tilt the
magazineback and lift it off the supports.
NOTE: The magazinecannot be remov-
ed withoutinsertingthe magazineslide.
The slide protectsthe film from fogging.
Note also that the camera cannot be
operatedwhen a magazinewith the slide
insertedis attachedto the camera.
The Magazine Status Indicator
The statusindicatoron the righthandside of
the magazineshowswhetherthe magazine
is readyto operate(white)or not (red),i.e.the
film has not been advanced.Do not attacha
magazineshowingwhiteto a camerathat is
not re-cocked!Wind it first,othenruiseyou will
lose one frame. Do not attach a magazine
showingred to a fully wound camera!That
could result in an unintentionaldouble ex-
posure since the frame in position in the
magazineprobablyalreadyis exposed.
lf the status indicatorshows red, releasethe
camera(page 17) beforeattachingthe ma-
gazine.Then, when you wind the camera,
the film will be advancedone frame.

The WindingCrank
One full revolutionof the windingcrankwinds
the camera,cocks the lens mechanismand
transportsthe film to the next:frame.
Underneaththe crankare the driveshaftand
the bayonetmountfor the HasselbladWinder
(pages74,76), which can be attachedafter
removingthe crank. lt is recommendedthat
the camerais fullywoundwhen the crank is
removedor replaced.
Removing the Winding Crank
To removethe crank push the catch leveron
the rear of the crank hub downwardswhile
rotatingthe crank counter-clockwise.Then
pull it straightout from the shaft.
Attaching the Winding Grank
On the side of the crankhub are two triangu-
lar index marks,a largerone and a smaller
one. Attach the crank to the shaft with the
smallermarkalignedwiththe reddot, located
immediatelyabovethe mount.Whilepushing
the crank againstthe camera body, rotate it
clockwiseuntilthelargermarkis alignedwith
the red dot.

Strapand Strap Lugs
The 203FE is deliveredwith a mediumwide
shoulderstrap, packedseparately.You will
find other types of straps in the Hasselblad
ProductCatalog.All strapsare providedwith
specialclipsfor easyattachingand removing
of the strap.
Attaching the Strap
Placethe main body of the strap clip from
behindoverthe straplug on the camerawith
the strappointingbackwards(seefig.).Press
the tip of the clip towardsthe camerawhile
pullingthe strapto slidethe clipoverthe lug
to the lockedposition.
Removing the strap
Holdthe strap pointingbackwardsand liftthe
lockingplateof the clip high enoughto pass
overthe top of the lug. Pushthe clipforwards
to slide it off the lug.

Focusing Hood and Magnifier
Openingthe FocusingHood
Liftthe lid with a firm gripon the tab at its rear
edgeand swingit up to a verticalposition.
Thehoodunfoldsautomaticallyandlocksin
openposition.
The Built-in Magnifier
Use the built-in4x magnifierto enlargethe
viewfinder image, e.g. for more accurate
focusing.To unfold it, push the oval catch
insidethe lid to the right,as indicatedin the
illustration.
To fold the magnifierdown, simply push it
back towardsthe lid until it locks.
The magnifiercan easily be exchangedfor
one with a suitablecorrectionlens to match
your individualeyesight(see page 26).

Flash Connectors
The flashconnectorsare locatedunderneath
the protective cover in the upper fonruard
cornerof the controlpanel.The smallerone
is a standardPO-socketand the largerone is
a 6-pin connectorfor TTl-controlleddedi-
cated flash units.
The Pc-socket
Non-dedicatedflash units and cedain adapt-
ers shouldbe connectedto this socket.
The Dedicated Flash Connector
A dedicatedf lashunitconnectedto this 6-
pinoutletdirectlyor througha suitableadapter
will be fullycontrolledby the cameraproces-
sor.

The Display lllumination
Pressingthe buttonabovethe flashconnec-
tors turns the display illuminationon or off.
The switch has a toggle function.lt works

The Automatic Exposure (AE) Lock
In the center of the mode selectordial is a
push-button,marked with a red circle. lt
operatesthe AE-lockand ceftainotherfunc-
tions,dependingon the settingof the mode
selectordial.You can also use it to startthe
electronicoperatingsystem in the camera.
The Adjustment Buttons
Thesekeys also have multiplefunctionsde-
pendingon the settingof the mode selector
dial.

Activation as per 1. above can only be
performed when the magazine slide is
removed.At normallightlevelsthis activation
occurs when the exposure button is de-
pressedfor an exposure.
At low light levels the camera should
always be activated well before releas-
ing the exposure in the automatic
modes (Ab, D and A).
Activation as per 2. is not possible if the
AE-lockhas been kept depressedfor more
than 16 seconds.
Keep the magazine slide inserted when
you wish to avoid unwanted battery power
consumptioncaused by unintentionalacti-
vationof the meteringsystem.
The electronicsystem and the viewfinder
display turn off automatically16 seconds
after the last key or button operation,but all
relevantdata are stored in the memory.

The Right Hand Side
On the righthandsideof the camerabodyare
thewindingcrank,describedon page10,and
the pre-releaseand selftimerlever.
Double Exposure
You can make double (or multiple)expo-
sures by rewinding the camera without
advancingthe film. This is possibleby de-
pressingthe double exposurebutton in the
centerof the crank hub and simultaneously
turning the crank slightlyclock-wise.Then
you can releasethe buttonand completethe
windinguntilthe crank locks.
Mirror and Mechanism Pre-release
By pre-releasingcertain camera functions
and liftingupthe mirroryoucan avoidcamera
vibrations,reducethesoundlevelandshoften
the timedelaybetweenthe depressingof the
exposurebuttonand the very exposurere-
lease.Pre-releasingis done by actuatingthe
pre-releaseleveronce. To resetthe mecha-

The Selftimer
Pressingthe pre-releaselever a second
time starts the selftimer function. This is
indicatedby the selftimersymbolin the view-
finderdisplayand by a flashingred light on
thecamerabodyto the leftof the lensmount.
Thestandarddelayin the selftimeris 10 s but
itcanbe set in intervalsbetween2 s and 60 s
in the Pr mode (pages 39,42).At the begin-
ningof the delay the light flashestwice per
second,but whentwo secondsremainof the
delay time it increasesto four times per
secondand changes to a continuouslight
duringthe lasthalfsecond.You can interrupt
the selftimerfunctionat any time by pressing
the pre-releaselever again or by a "blind"
rewindas for doubleexposure.
Theselftimerfunctionis inoperativewhenthe
shutterspeed ring is set in positionsB or G
(pages22,23).
The Grip Cushion
A rubbercushionalongthe loweredgeof the
righthandside providesa safe and comfort-
able grip.
