tube gentlybut firmly into the flash head until it stops. Check that it is positively
 fixed.
 Fitting the reflector (fig's 4 - 6)
The reflector(3) has four positionindications, two for "wide-angle"(11) and two
for "Normal"(19) positions.Positionswith the same indicationare equal.
Turn the lockingknob (18) counter-clockwise3 - 4 turns (fig.a). push the re-
flectorover the flash tube (4) and align the requiredpositionindicationwith the
index mark on the flash head (1). The reflectorhas notches in the neck to
ensurecorrectpositioning.Push the reflectorinto the flash head until it stops.
Turn the locking knob clockwiseuntil it stops to positivelyfasten the reflecior.

Sefting the film speed
Set the film speedwith the film speed selectoron the various503 cameramodels
and on the 553ELXand 201F models.For the 203FEand205 models,set the film
speed on the E-typefilm magazineor in the Pr mode on the camera.See the in-
structionmanualfor the respectivecamera model!
NOTE:The flashcontrolcircuitmetresthe lightreflectedotfthe filmsurface(OTF).
Differentfilm types and brands have differentreflectingproperties. These differ-
ences are most easilycorrectedfor by adjustingthe film speedsetting.See the
chart on page 43 for the adjustedsettingsfor the most commonfilm types and
brands.
Operating the flash (fig. 12)
Turnon the flashby slidingthe powerswitch(16)to the'BATT"position.Whenthe
red "READY"light(14) comes on the flash is readyfor use.For the readysignals
in the variouscamera models, see the instructionmanualsfor the cameras.
You can now press the READY/TESTlamp-button(1a) to releasea test flash.
Settings for fill-in flash
Fill-inflash usuallymeansthat the flash is used with reducedpoweroutput,e.g.
to lightenup shadow areas etc. With the 201, 503 and 553 camera modelsthe
easiestway to reducethe poweroutputis to adjustthe film speedsettingto reach
the requiredpower level.
The 2O3FEand 205FCCmodelscan be pre-setin the Pr modefor the fill-inflash
level.
Example:The adjustedfilmspeedsettingis ISO 100.The requiredlighteningof the
shadowareas is estimatedto 1 2/3 stops below the normalexposure. The appro-
priatesettingis then ISO 320 (eachfull stop doublesthe film speed).
See the camera'sinstructionmanualfor further information!
Further D-FLASH40 featur€s (fig's13-16)
Indirectflash (fig's13, 14)
To avoid harshshadowsand softenthe flash illuminationof the subjectarea it may
be feasibleto "bounce"the lightotf the ceilingor walls. For this purposethe flash
head (1) with the reflector(3) can be tilted to a verticalpositionwith click stops
at 15' intervals(fig.13) and swivelled180' to the rightand 150"to the leftwithclick
stops at 30" intervals(fig. 1a).
NOTE: Rememberthat when the flash is bouncedthe lightreachingthe subject
is reduced, partiallyby the increaseddistance and partiallydue to the lower
reflectanceof these surfaces.Replacethe magazinewith the exposuretest plate
(fig. 15) and make test exposuresto check that the illuminationis sufficient.
Glose-upsetting (fig. 16)
To obtainan even illuminationof the subjectarea at closedistancesthe flashhead
can be tilted10odownfrom horizontal,correspondingto an object{o{ilmdistance
of approx.1.3m (51 in.) with the flash mountedon top of the viewfinder.
NOTE: Avoid usinglargeapertureswhen photographingat closedistancesdue
to the risk for overexposure.
Reflector adjustment (fig's5, 6)
The reflector(3) has two differentpositions,"Wide-angle"W (11)and "Normal"N
(19).The W positionshouldbe usedfor lenseswith focal lengthsup to 60mm and
the N positionfrom 80mm and up.
To adjustthe reflector,startwww.orphancameras.comby looseningthe reflectorlockingknob (18) severa
turns.Pullthereflector(3)straightouttofreeitfromthe mountin theflashhead(1).

Turnit to alignthe requiredindicationw or N with the positioningmark (2) on top
of the flash head and push it back all the way intothe mount.Checkthat it is fixed
 and cannotmove.Tightenthe lockingknob again.
 Flashilluminationrange
The chart on page 6 shows the approximateflash range in metresfor the reflec-
tor positionsw and N with differentaperturesat a film speed of lso100.
 Test exposure
Check if the flash power is sufficientfor a correctexposurewithoutlosingfilm by
simplyreplacingthe film magazinewith the exposuretest plate(fig.15).The cen-
tral area of the test plate has similarreflectanceas a normalfilm. Make any re-
quirednumberof exposuresand observethe signalsin the camera'sviewfinder,
 adjustingapertureand/or distanceuntilthe signalsconfirma correctexposure.
 Bare-Bulb
 Undercertainconditions,e. g. when workingwith extremewide-anglelenses,a
much largerilluminationangle is requiredthan could be obtainedwith the reflec-
tor. By removingthe reflectorand usingthe flash tube unobscured, the illumina-
tion of the subjectarea is adequateeven for a "fish-eye"lens.
NOTE:The illuminationrangeof the flash when it is used withoutreflectorwill be
reduced. Use the test plate for test exposures (see above).
NorE: when firingflashesin a rapidsequencewith high poweroutputthe
batteriesbecome very warm. lf you fire 20 flashes with full power you must
allow the flash to cool off for at least 20 minutes or replace the battery
   cassette.
Flash use on cameras without a flash control system
When used on Hasselblador other cameraswithouta flash controlsystemonly
the PC cord shouldbe connected. The flashthen deliversfull powerflashesonly
and shouldbe used in conjunctionwith normalguide numbercalculations.
The guide numbersat lSO100film speed are for metresand (feet):
    Reflectorin N position: 40 (132)
    Reflectorin W position: 33 (110)
Powersupply
The D-FLASH 40 can be used with three ditferent power supply sources:
Battery cassette (deliveryitem) for Alkaline batteriesor
   RechargeableNiCd-batteries
Externa-ibattery pack SUNPAK TR-Pak lt (accessory)
when the includedbatterycassetteis used, the power switch (16) should be set
to the "BATT"position(fig. 12).
when the externalbatterypack rR-PAK ll is used the power switch(16) should
be set to the "EXT"position(fig. 17).
Battery cassette (fig's 7 - 9)
The battery cassette includedwith the flash requires6 pcs size AA batteries.Al-
kalineor rechargeableNiCdbatteriesare recommended.Batteriesare not included.

Maintenanceand storage
The D-FLASH40 operates with very high voltages. Never open or disassem-
ble it!
Do not exposethe flash unit to wet conditions.lf it gets wet, wipe it dry immedi-
ately using a soft cloth.
Do not store the flash unit in a hot or humid environment.
To maintainthe flash condenserin optimalconditionwhilethe flash unit is not
beingusedfrequently,it shouldbe switchedon untilthe "READY"lightcomes on
and then switchedoff again. This procedureshouldbe repeatedevery6 months.
lf the flashis not to be usedfor 2 - 3 weeksthe batteriesshouldbe removed.
The TTLtonnectionshouldonly be usedon Hasselbladcameraswith a TTLflash
controlsystem.
Never lift or carry the camera by the flash!
Adjusted film speed setting
The TTL flash controlsystem metres the light reflectedotf the film surface (OTF).
It is calibratedfor the reflectancecharacteristicsof a standardsurface, such as
the HasselbladTest Plate.Differentfilm types and brands have differentreflect-
ing propefties, that may cause incorrectexposures. These differencesare most
easilycorrectedfor by adjustingthe film speed setting. To obtaina correctexpo-
sure with a TTLflash controlsystem it is thereforevitalto make these adjustments.
The tableon page 43 showsthe film speed, markedon the film package, and the
adjustedfilm speed to be used as settingfor the TTL flash system.
In the table the first columnshows the manufacturersfilm designation, the sec-
ond columnthe film speed as it is markedon the film or the film package. The
followingcolumnsshow the adjustedfilm speed to be set with the film speed
selectoron the 201F,503 and 553 model camerasor on the Etype film maga-
zine alt. in Pr mode on the 203 and 205 modelcameras.
