Assembling and Operating Horseman 450
. Assembling Camera
Fix the camera on a tripod or a stand as shown in Photograph 1.
Use either a larger (3/8"'l or a smaller (1/4"1taphole on the camera
base according to the screw diameter of your tripod.
There are a number of ways of assembling the camera as the camera
may be assembled freely to meet any photographic requirement.
The following is the standard method of assembly.
(1) Release the lock for the swing movement on both the front and
rear Supports (8). Turn the L Supports g0". The operating
knobs for the camera movements should be on the left and the
swing indicator (10) at the "0" position. Lock both Swing
Lock Levers to secure L Supports as shown in Photograph 2.
(21 Extend the bellows rearward and afix it to the Main Frame on
the Rear Standard by using Slide Locks as shown in Photograph
3. The camera assembly is completed.
o Attaching Lens
A Blank Lensboard is included with the Horseman 450 camera.
The Lensboard should be bored to match the shutter diameter of the
lens that you want to use. lf the lens is mounted on the Sinar
Lensboard, it can be mounted on the Horseman 450.
. VerticaUHorizontal Conversion of the format
Release the Slide Locks (26) and detach the Supporting Frame.
Turn the frame to the vertical or horizontal position and attach
it again by working the Slide Locks.
o Focusing Operation
Focusing is done by working the Focusing Knobs (2) on the Stand-
ard Base (7). The usual method of focusing is to move the rear
standard, however focusing can also be accomplished by moving the
front standard. For closeups and copying, set the magnification by
moving either of the standards, and focus by moving the entire
camera assembly with the Focusing Knob (2) on the Base (1).
Camera Movements
(Common to Front and Rear Standards)
(11 Tilt: Loosen the Lock Knob for Tilt (19), turn the Main
Frame and lock it in position when the desired angle is set.
Amount of rotation is indicated on the Scale for Tilt (20).
QI Swing: Loosen the Lock Lever for Swing (8), turn the L
support and lock it in position when the desired angle is set.
Amount of rotation is shown on the Scale for Swing (9).
(31 Rise/Fall: Loosen the Lock Knob for Rise/Fall (16) and turn
the Knob for Rise/Fall (15). Amount of movement is indicated
in mm on the Scale for Rise/Fall (17).
(41 Lateral Shift: Loosen the Lock Knob for Lateral Shift (13)
and turn the Knob for Lateral Shift (12). Amount of movement
is indicated in mm on the Scale for Lateral Shift (14).

o Using Spirit Level
The Spirit Level is a revolving type and may be used for both lateral
and vertical directions. This conversion is done by turning the Level
manually. The Spirit Level may be attached in either of the two
Spirit Level Bases on the upper and lower sections of the Main
Frame. Pull the level out to detach it when changing the position.
o Attaching Film Holders
Lift the edge of the Groundglass Frame slightly and insert the film
holder until it stops. The Polaroid 545 Film Holder, the Horseman
Optical Exposure Computer and other appropriate sheet and roll
film holders may also be inserted in the same manner, as shown in
Photograph 4.
When attaching the Polaroid 405 Film Holder*, push simultaneously
the two Spring Latches (30) on the longer side of the Groundglass
Frame to detach the Frame by sliding it as shown in Photograph 5.
Then, attach the film holder using the two Accessory Holders (28)
on the Supporting Frame.
o Taking 6 x 9 cm, 6 x 7 cm photographs
When taking 6 x 9 cm or 6 x 7 cm photographs on roll film, attach
454 directly to the camera the Horseman Roll Film Holders 451 -
on the Horseman or attach the Horseman Roll Film Holders 1 - 4
Rotary Back ll*. In attaching these to the camera, detach the
Groundglass Frame and affix the film holder or the Rotary Back
using the two Accessory Holders (28) on the Supporting Frame. *, When attaching the accessories indicated by turn the Main Frame
180o. For details, see the following "Variations of Assembly",
Section (6).
Variations of Assembly
The following six sections are alternative methods of assembling the
Horseman 450. (The Lensboard side is rendered front and the
Groundglass side rear. Left and right are the directions when viewed
from rear.)
1 Left and Right of Focusing Knob on Base
The Focusing Knob on Base is situated at right at the time of
delivery. lf you wish to set the Focusing Knob on Base on the
opposite side of the Focusing Knobs on the Standards (see
Section (4)), you can simultaneously change magnifications and
focus with both hands. In this case, loosen the screw of the
Monorail Stopper Plate to detach it. take the Base from the
Monorail and reverse it. Then reattach the Base to the Monorail.
This procedure is common to the Sections 2 , 3 and 4 www.butkus.us. -3

Front and Rear, Surface and Back of Monorail
The rear of the Monorail is set at "0" at the time of delivery.
As the back of the Monorail has no calibrations. you can write
in your own marks or calibrations.
Inside and Outside use of Lock Lever for Swing.
The Lock Levers for swing are set to face outside at the time of
delivery. The levers can face each other by interchanging the
Standards.
Left and Right of Focusing Knobs on Standards
The Focusing Knobs on the standards are situated on right side
at the time of delivery.
Left and Right of L Supports.
Turing the L Supports left or right may be easily done as the
L Supports can be rotated 360o by detaching the Bellows and
releasing the Lock Levers for Swing. After turing the L Sup-
ports, rotate the Main Fradre (2) 180' in order to return the
Main Frame to the proper operating position.
Positioning Main Frames at Front, Rear and Center of L Sup-
ports.
Both Main Frames are positioned at front of each L Support
as shown in Photograph 6. Only when the Main Frame on the
Rear Standard is positioned at the front position, the tilt/swing
axis and the focal plane coincide, preventing the shift of focus
and picture image on the center line of the picture frame by the
tilt and swing movements.
While maintaining the front offset of the rear Main Frame,
detach the Bellows and Lensboard from the front Main Frame,
loosen the Lock Levers for Tilt and turn the front Main Frame
180o. The front Main Frame is positioned at rear of the front L
Support and the front and rear Main Frames come to their
closest position as shown in Photograph 7. In this case, the
flange-focal distance is the shortest at 60 mm, and a 65 mm
super ryide angle lens may be used on a flat lensboard, without
using a special recessed lensboard, though a wideangle bellows
should be used. Maximum bellows extenslon is acquired by
setting the front Main Frame at the front position and the rear
Main Frame at rear position as shown in Photograph 8.
The Main Frames may also be positioned at center of L Sup-
ports, if necessary. Turn the Main Frame g0" to set it laterally,
loosen the two Lock Knobs for Main Frame (23) and detach
the frame by sliding it from L Support as shown in Photograph
9. Then, insert the Main Frame from the opposite side (to the
direction opposite of the arrow on the. frame) as shown in
Photograph 10, and lock the Frame with the two Lock Knobs.
lf the Main Frame is inserted to the direction of the arrow, it
is placed in the offset position. The shift of picture image by
the tilt/swing movements may be minimized by utilizing these
three positions of the Main Frame on the front L Support
(front offset, centering and rear offset).
When using the Horseman Rotary Back ll, set the rear Main
Frame at rear of the L Support. Though the Polaroid 40b Film
Holder may be used for any position of the Main Frame, the dark
slide operation is the easiest when the Main Frame is at the rear
offset.

Interchanging and Detaching Groundglass and Fresnel Lens
lf the Fresnel Lens is included with the Horseman 450, it
is fixed in front of the Groundglass (to the side of the lens).
Follow the procedures'below when interchanging Ground-
glass and Fresnel Lens or detaching the Fresnel Lens.
o Detaching (See Photograph 11)
Loosen the six screws to detach the Groundglass Latches
(A). The Groundglass and the Fresnel Lens are separated
by detaching the upper and lower Fresnel l-ens Latches (B).
Be sure not to lose the Spacers (C).
. Attaching
1 Attaching Frecnel Lens
Align the grooved surface of the Fresnel Lens with the
sandblast surface of the Groundglass (the letters of
"HORSEMAN"on the Fresnel Lens are viewed correctly
on the Groundglass) and attach it with the Fresnel Cuations in Use Lens Latches. Place the Spacer correctly on the
Groundglass Frame and put the Groundglass on it, with 1 Be sure to release the lock before operating each the Groundglass on the upper side. Fix the Ground- camera movement. The forced operation in the locked

in high-magnification closeups and photomicrography
because focusing is done with the bright aerial images.
When using the Aerial-lmage Groundglass, the Fresnel
Lens is not used. Place the Aerial-lmage Groundglass on
the Groundglass'Frame(without using the Spacer)and fix
it on the frame after removing the rubber on the under-
side of the Groundglass Latches. ln focusing with the
Aerial-lmage Groundglass, use a magnifier with an
eyesight adjustment device. Adjust the eyesight until
the scale (in 0.5 mm) in the aerial-image section at the
center of the Groundglass is viewed most clearly.
Focusing is correct when both the scale and the aerial-
image of the subject are viewed clearly.
