Assembling Camera
Fix the camera on a tripod or a stand as shown in
Photograph 1. use either the larger (3/B') or smaller
(r /4') taphole on the camera base according to the
screw diameter of your tripod.
The optional Quick Shoe (code No. zTsG4)mav be
used for quick mounting to a tripod.
There are a number of ways of assembling the camera
as the camera may be assembled freely to meet any
photographic requirement. The following is the standard
method of assembly.
(1) Release the locks for the swing movement on both
the front and rear Supports (g). Turn the L Supports
90' . The operating knobs for camera movements
should be on the left and the swing indicator (10)a+. o0' the position. Lock both Swing Lock Levers to
secure L Supports as shown in Photograph Z.
(2) Extend the bellows rearward and afix it to the
Main Frame on the Rear Standard by using Sride
Locks.

Variationsof Assembly
The following five sections explain alternative methods
of assembling the Horseman 450. (The Lensboard side
is rendered front and the Groundglass side rear. Left
and right are the directions when viewed from rear.)
1) Focnsing Knob on Left or Right of BGe.
If you wish to have the Base's Focusing Knob on
the opposite side from the Focusing Knobs on the
Standards (see Section (4)), you can simultaneously
change magnifications and focus with both hands.
In this case, loosen the screw of the Monorail
Stopper Plate to detach it, take the Base from the
Monorail and reverse it. Then reattach the Base to
the Monorail. This procedure is common to Sections
2 and 3 below.
In case of Expandable Monorail: Unscrew the
Extension Locking Knob located on the bottom
side of the monorail and remove it. Then slide the
Base off the monorail, turn base to opposite direction,
reattach base and reinsert Locking Knob.
2) Front and Rear, Surface and Back of Monorail.
o0' The rear of the Monorail is set at at the time
of delivery. As the bottom side of the Monorail has
no calibrations, you can write in your own marks or
calibrations. In case of Expandable Monorail: No
upside-down use is possible.
3) Inside and Outside use of Lock Lever for Swing.
The Lock Levers for Swing are set to face outside
at the time of delivery. The levers can face each
other by interchanging the Standards.
4) Left and Right of L Supports.
Turning the L Supports left or right may be easily
done by turning the L Support 180'. After turning
the L Supports, rotate the Main Frame (2) 180' for
the proper operating position.
5) Positioning Main Frames on the L Supportrs.
A). Standard Positioning
Both Main Frames are positioned at the front of
their L Support as shown in Photograph (1). Only
when the rear Main Frame is in its front position
will the tilt / swing axis and the focal plane
coincide, preventing a shift of focus and picture
image on the center line of the picture frame when
using tilt and swing movements.
B). For the shortest Flange Back Distance of 6Omm
While maintaining the front offset of the rear Main
Frame, rotate the front Main Frame 180' . The front
Main Frame is positioned at the rear of the front L
Support so that the front and rear Main Frames
come to their closest position. In this case, the
flange-focal distance is the minimum of 60mm,and a
65mmlens may be used on a flat lensboard, without
using a special recessed lensboard, though a
wideangle bellows should be used.
C). For the Longest Flange Focal Distance
Maximum bellows extension is achieved by setting
the front Main Frame at its front position and the
rear Main Frame at its rear position.

All the photos in this owner's manual show the
Horseman 4 x 5 camera system, but the manual is
also common to the SxT and 8 x 10 systems. The
expandable monorail is used for the 4 x 5 EM, 5 x 7
and 8 x 10 cameras, and is expandable from 460mmto
700mm.
Special Instruction for the use
of the Expandable Monorail
l).Quick focusing may be accomplished by releasing
of the bottom on knob located locking the the /= portion the upper sliding monorail and expandable
forward or backward manually as desired. After the
approximate location has been found, be sure to
tighten the lower locking knob.

Adjustment of Focusing Torque
Adjust focusing torque by rotating the three hexagonal
bolts on the knob side of the standard base (7) (see
diagram) using the hexagonal wrench.
X Do not loosen the bolts too much, as the L-support
could then move even when the focusing lock is applied.
Adjustment of Groundglass Back Spring Arm Torque
Place the ground glass back as shown in the diagram
and then fit the hexagonal wrench over the hexagonal
bolt on the spring plate.
Rotate the wrench a little to the right or left to
increase or decrease the torque of the spring.
X Do not loosen the hexagonal bolt too much, as the
ground glass back could be displaced slightly when a
reflex viewer or other accessory is attached.
lmportant
1 Be sure to release the appropriate lock before operating
each camera movement. Forced operation in the locked
position ma)' damage the driving and locking mechanisms.
2 Refrain from disassembly beyond the limits of assembly
and disassembly of each module as described in the
instructions.
3 Refrain from using organic solvents such as lacquer
thinner and acetone in cleansing Knobs and Fresnel
Lens, because they are made of molded resins which
are easily damaged. Use only a mild soap and soft cloth.
4 In cleansing the mat surface of the Groundglass, wipe
gently with a soft cloth wet with a small amount of
alcohol. Do not use water or blow on the groundglass.
