ONI.Y SPEED GRAPHIG OWNIIRS GAN
ENJOY SI'PER.SPEED PHOTOGRAPHY
WITH THE KALANT SISTOGUN II
The SISTOGUN II was designed by Press
Photographers fo, Press Photographers who
want to get super-speed-quick-aetion shots
with the focal plane shutters on, their cam-
eras. This new synchronizer for the focal
plane shutter of the 31/+ x 4t/+ and 4 x 5
Speed Graphic Cameras contains many im-
provements in design and construction over
the justly-famous Original SISTOGUN. It is
easily installed-no holes to drill: no special
tools required and it is now even unnecessary
to remove the shutter winding knob from
the carnera for installation. Its more posi-
tive contacts assure consistent synchr oniza-
tion without loss of shutter speed even at
r,loo'o secOnd.
The SISTOGUN II is a comp act, precision in-
strument which really completes your Speed
Graphic.
HOW THE II.AI.ART SISTOGI'N II
OPERATES
The SISTOGUN II installs on the 37/+ x 4r/+ and
4 x 5 Anniversary and Old Style Speed Graph-
ic cameras only. It consists of a Contact Ring and
Housing, and fits readily under the winding knob.
The SISTOGUN II does not interfere in any way
with the normal camera operation or with the use
of the KALART Lens-Coupled Range Finder and
Focuspot.

The SISTOGUN II is conveniently placed and in-
conspicuous, and matches the Speed Graphic -metal ae-finish. Its positive safety switch, -automatic intion,-theprevents premature firing of bulbs while wind-ing shutter. Installation is simple and can be
accomplished by the camera owner.
In action, the first motion of the shutter -windingkey simply moves away from the SISTOGUN cam
releasing it to fire the bulb. Since the movement of
the winiiing shaft does not "drive" the SISTOGUN
there is no "drag" or "slow-dowt" on the shutter.
At no part of its "travel" does the shaft or windi4g
key exert any pressure on the moving parts _of the
Synchronizer therefore they turn as freely as before
its installation.
The SISTOGUN II can be used wjth the KALART
Master Flashing Unit and with the battery cases
of most other flash synchronizers.

1. To facilitate the installation and adjustment of
the SISTOGUN II, remove the ground glass panel
by removing the 2 screws from the springs holding
the panel to the camera back. Also remove the 3screws indicated (A) on F"iS. 1. Open tension lock
(K) on the SISTOGUN II Housing (D) by loosen-
ing screw (G) FiS. 2. Gauge the height of the focal
plane shutter winding kt* to determine whether it
is necessary to use one of the 3 shims supplied, by
placing the SISTOGUN II Housing (D) over the
knob. The 3 shims are furnished and should be used.
if necessary, to provide the required lsz inch clear-
ance between the Sistogun Housing and the under
side of the winding key. To check the clearance use
the heaviest of the 3 shims (r/sz" ) furnished with theSIS;TOGUN II as a gauge. If the clearance is greater
than Vs2" , one or more of the three shims furnishedshould be used to obtain the correct clearance. Most
installations will require the use of the Yst" (heavi-
est) shim.
2. Place the eorreet shim (B ) over the windingknob as shown in Fig. 1. Now place the contact
ring ( C ) in position so that the numerical adjust-
Bernent dial (E) set on fi4 is at the top (FiS. 1).careful not to distort the contact spring or spread
the contact ring while slipping it over the shaft of
the focal plane shutter. Hold the winding key so
that it is parallel to the back of the camera and place
the Sistogun Housing (D) over it, allowing the knob
to come through the 2 slots in the Housing. Fasten
the Housing to the camera using the three screws
supplied to replace the original screws. Before tight-
ening screws be sure that the Contact Ring is prop-
erly centered in the Housing.
CAUTION:-The lock on the Housing should be
secured and locked in position by tight-
ening screw (G) Fig. 2.
3. Attach the Connecting Cord to prong:s protrud-
ing from top of SISTOGUN II Housing and the
other end into the series or focal plane synchronizer
outlet of the battery case. Place a test lamp in
soeket of battery ease.View original page 5Page 6 · Read text

test bulb lights,'stop the knob and place a finger of
your left hand (let go of the release lever) on the
curtain against the top of the opened back. Now let
the curtain move slowly again. For Anniversary
Model Speed Graphic, the curtain aperture should be
approximately 3/+ of an inch above the point where
the bulb lit: for old style Speed Graphics, the dis-
tancdi, should be about Y+ of an inch.
If the space is less, it signifies that contact was
betoo late and the adjustment dial (E ) shouldturned counter-clockwise (to a smaller number). To
move the adjustment dial, insert small screw driver
blade or similar tool in slot of contact ring and turn
ring. If the space is greater, contact was too early
and the dial is turned clockwise (to a larger number).
After the SISTOGUN II has been adjusted so that
contact is made at the proper point, synchroniza-
tion may be checked by making an exposure at
7/'tooo sec. F:8, at a blank wall about I2-I5 feet away.
Use either Wabash 2A or Mazda 31 lamrrs anC
Press type film. Inspect the developed negative br-
holding it upside down with the emulsion side awa1
from you. If the exposure is uniform across the
entire negative, the adjustment is satisfactory. If
the negative (as you are holding it) is thinner at
the top and denser at the bottom, the flash was too
( B )late. To adjust, turn the adju stment dial
eounter-clockwise to a smaller number. If the ton
of the negative is denser than the bottonr, the flash
is too early and the dial should be set at a higher
number.
