How lo use the Universal Copying Equipmenf
R E PROVIT I
llluminotion
Successful copying requires perfecily even illuminotion of the subiect. The
four-lomp illuminotion orrongement provides the most suitoble lighting set-up
for this purpose. In its stondord position this ensures on evenly lit subject
field. Generolly (e. S. for document copying) this stondord position should
noi be oltered.
The stondord set-up for the four-lomp illuminotion orrongement for uniform
ilf uminoiion of subject oreos up to 17 x 23 in. is os follows (see Fig. 3) :
The clomps corrying the cross bors ore pushed os for os ihey will go ogoinst
ihe stop neor the fop of the verticol columns. The reflectors ore set ot right
ongles to the corrying orms which in turn ore set ot 45' to the verticol
columns. The reflectors ore thus fixed obout 4 inches obliquely obove the
electric plugs.
The reflectors ore left in this
posilion even when the froming
box is used.
www.butkus.us For close-ups of solid obiects the
best position of the lompsdepends
on the subiect. The reflectors ore
eosily odiusted in ony direclion
for ihe most suiioble lighting for
generol work or speciol effects.
t---. Equolly suitoble ore universolly
;co45o odjusioble iointed lomp holders
which con be clomped to the
toble. A four-woy odoptor is
ovoiloble for connecting severol
illuminoting units. This odoptor
is in turn connected to ihe socket
on the boseboord.

AII lornps should be orronggd symmetricolly oi both sides of the bme boord
so thoi the light folls on the centre of the boord ot pboui 45o. For even
ifluminotion of o subiect oreo of 17 x .23 in. the lomps should be ot leost
4 r/e feet owoy.
The Focusing Stoge
The focusing stoge (Fig. 6) moves to ond fro between lwo siops. One of the
slops con be odiusted on lifting the milled knob on it (Fig. a). When the
stop is fully pulled bock (l) the slide con be pulled our of the guide roils
to the left for cleoning etc, In the middle position (2) the stop limits the
lrovel of the stoge to ihe left in normol use. Pushing the stop forword (3)
locks the focusing stoge.

When the Leico body (without lens) is fitted to ihe top of the focusing stoge
the lens mount must. fit correctly into the corresponding opening in the slide.
The comero is held by o spring clomp ond must be porollel to the focusing
stoge.
The correct position is fixed once ond for oll for the Leico model in use
(older Leico bodies differ somewhot in their dimensions) by meons of o
movoble stop (Fig. 5). The milled knob A ollows odiustment for the length
of the comero body, ond the smoll screw B neor it for the height.
To roise or lower the corrying orm, the locking screw is loosened first. The
comero is focused by turning the lorge helicol focusing mount. For lorge
close-ups (r/e reduction to 2 x mognificotion) the detochoble fine focusing
odiustment should be used to roise or lower the corrying orm.View original page 10Page 11 · Read text

The interchongeoble 50 mm. Elmor fi 3.5 is.used os toking lens. To focilitote
opening up or stopping down, fhe slip-on diophrogm ring VALOO is fitted
over the lens mount. The notch in the ring should fit over the operture
setting pin of ihe lens when both ore set to f/3.5. The lens is then inserted
in the boyonet mount of the lorge helicol focusing mount (Fig.7; tor
cloriiy the diophrogm ring hos been omitted in the illustrotion).
After mounting the looded comero body on the focusing stoge, the proce-
dure for copying flot subiects is os follows:
'1. Switch on the proiector lomp or the lighting units by plugging the moster
plug into the moins socket. Switch over lo the lighting unit with the
chonge-over swiich ot the left hond edge of the boseboord. This disconnects
the proiection lomp. The ground gloss screen with the proiection heod on
it should be obove the lens.
I 2. Prepore the originol to be copied.
3. Switch over to the projection lomp. When the proiected imoge of the
I index mork is shorp, the illuminoted oreo shows the exoct field of view
recorded on ihe film.View original page 11Page 14 · Read text
www.butkus.us Accessories For occurote focusing o 5x direct or right-ongle focusing mognifier is ovoil- oble. The right-ongle mognifier is only used for lorger solid obiects to ollow convenient viewing from the front of greoi obiect distonces. For Llz scole to full-size reproductions, or for 'l to l Llz x ond I tl, to 2 x mognificotions, one, two, or three Repro extension tubes ore inserted between the focusing stoge ond the lorge helicol focusing mount. The froming box ll3/s i 165/s in. with r.eue.sible pressure ploie is designed to toke books ond similor moteriol up to 5 in. thick. While one holf of the book is pressed ogoinst the plote gloss sheet, on odiustoble orm prevents the other holf from flopping down. The froming'box is fixed ond correctly oligned on the boseboord by o speciol locking device. With books ond periodicols up to 81/r x 113/s in., two focing poges con be copied simultoneously. ln this cose the book sloge compensotes for ony difference in thickness of the two holves of the book. This book stoge evenly presses both poges ogoinst the gloss plote. To copy tronsporent originols, on illuminoting box is used (Fig.8). The originol is ploced on the opol gloss sheet ond, if necessory, held flot by o second sheet of gloss. The illuminciting box uses moins-operoted lomps ond con be connected either to the socket in the boseboord, or direct to the moins. For photomicrogrophy the micro-odoptor is screwed to the focusing stoge in ploce of the lens (Fig. 9). To odiust the focusing telescope for viewing from the front, the locking ring obove the shutter cosing is turned onti- clockwise to loosen it, ond pulled tight ogoin when the focusing telescope is correctly oligned. The light screening tube should slide up to the index line into o similor screening odoptor on the microscope tube. The height of the corrying or:m with ttre focusing stoge ond micro-odopior is odiusted At low mognificotions the microscope imoge is focused directly on ihe ground gloss screen of the focusing stoge; with higher power obiectives the focusing telescope.is used.View original page 14

Further detoiled directions for
photomicrogrophy with the Leico will be found in the insiruction book for
