Setting
The Mecablitz is put into operation with the switch at the back. When the
Unit is switched on a Red Mark is visible on the Switch. When the Flashgun
is ready for the first flash the Neon indicator in the Flashhead lights up.
Shutter Speed
With central shutters 1/roo sec. is suitable, but with focal-plane shutters
1/zo ot r/so s€c., according to the camera-maker's instructions, will be
             required.
Focussing
The camera is focussed in the usual way.
Aperture Calculator
Your Mecablitz has an Aperture Calculator, which assists in finding the
correct Aperture to be set on the Camera. At a glance the correct
Aperture for a certain film speed and distance can be read.
Set film speed with the Outer Ring. lust read the Aperture opposite the
required distance in the lower part of the Inner Ring.
        Detailed Instructions
Warning
Before taking the Mecablitz into use, connect it to the mains for about
half an hour to re-activate the reservoir capacitor. This will conserve the
batteries. Please be caref ul to notice that the apparatus must be
connected only to A/C mains of the voltage marked on the plug of the
         A/C lead.

www.butkus.usDear Photo Fan
You are now the owner of a Mecablitz, the Electronic Flash Unit incorpo-
rating the latest and best technical developments. lf you use your : Mecablitz according to the following instructions it will serve you faith-
              fully under all conditions.
       Abbreviated Instructlons
Before taking the Mecablitz into use, connect it to the A/C mains for
about half an hour. (Warning. The apparatus must only be operated from
A/C mains of the voltage shown on the plug of the mains lead.)
Attachlng to the Camera
The Mecablitz can either be fixed to the top of the camera by means of
the accessory shoe or attached at the side by means of a connecting bar.
Synchronizalion
lf you own a modern camera with a synchronizing contact in the accessory
shoe, you have the advantage of a camera shutter and a flash unit
automatically synchronized through the base contact of the flash unit
when it is slipped on to the camera.
lf you own a camera which does not yet have an automatic synchro- ' contact inside the camera shoe, it is important to fix the enclosed synchro-
cable to the Mecablitz before you attach it to the camera. Thus you
disconnect the automatic foot contact of the Mecablitz, which musl only
be used with cameras having an automatic synchro-conlact inside lhe
          camela shoe.

Choice of Correct Batteries
The number of flashes per set of batteries, and the re-cycling time bet- ween. flashes, depend greatly on the type of batt'ery ihosen. We -very therefore recommend.for.your Me-cablitz 115'the "segmenta aaUy Cel No. 255" of the Pertrix fiim, for these will give you- the best ritsutis.
Should on occasion this battery not be available, naiurally otheiUatteiiei ' can be used. To help you make a satisfactory choice, we attach a table of the results that have been obtained with aifferent types of Uaiteiies-.

Insertlng and changing of batteries
The batteries are exhausted and have to be replaced if the re-cycling time takes longer than 50 sec.
To enab.le you to insert and remove the old batteries, you have to remove
the sliding cover of. the battery pack. when doing thii, you have to hold the instrument as illustrated. You have to push i-he liJ'with your thumb as far as it goes towards the corner of the flashgun. After iftii tfre liO

be removed by turning the instrument upside down. Attention. Be careful
when inserting the batteries, they must be put in the correct position plus
and minus as indicated on the battery chamber. To close the battery
chamber, the lid has to be pressed down and will close at the same time.

lmportant Hints on Operation
Whenever the apparatus is taken into use again after an interval, it is advisable to connect it to AIC for about half an hour to activate the
reservoir capacitor. (lt is connected exactly as rescribed under ,,Flashing from the AlC".) By doing this the batteries are conserved and the
number of flashes they will give is not reduced.

make sure that the "X" socket on the camera is used, or alternatively
that the synchronizing lever on the camera shutter is set to "X".
Switching On
The Mecablitz 116 is switched on by the sliding switch on the back of the
apparatus. A red mark on the switch is then visible. Readiness to flash is
shown by the lighting up of the indicator lamp on the back of the
             apparatus.
Shutter Speed.
With central shutters the speed is of no importance. To ensure sharp
pictures even when there is a good deal of light in the room, it is
advisable to set the shutter to r/roo sec.
Focal-plane shutters, on the other hand, must be set to some speed bet-
ween r/zo and 1/so sec., as recommended for electronic flash by the maker
of the camera. In any case the shutter must be set in such a way that
during the time of the flash the entire film is uncovered.
Distance Setting
The Distance is set in the usual way.
Aperture Serting
To obtain the correct Aperture use the Guide Numbers, given by the
Flashgun manufacturers for every film speed. Choose correct Aperture
          as follows:
Aperture - Guide Number divided by Distance. Distance is measured from the subject to the Reflector.

of 18 DIN (280 Scheiner, 50 ASA). The distance is
5 meters and the Aperture shows 1.2,8. Aperture
Calculators with feet/ASA calibration work on\ the same principle.
The setting of the film speed tefers to Black and
I White Films and Color Films at the same time. This is due to the fact that the film producers
have generally altered the film speed ratings for
                  Black and White Films.

For use with cameras having automatic flash synchronisation we marked
\ the Guide Numbers (Leitzahl) below the DIN (ASA) values.
\ Finding Aperlure by Guide Numbers
I The Guide Numbers for the various films are listed on page 2.
By dividing the Guide Number by Distance the Aperture is obtained.
