SCA 3OOSystem
(Special Camera Adapter System)
Many camera manufacturersoffer cameras that are designed to interface
with flash units in order to supportspecificdedicatedfeatures.SCA 300
Systemadaptersmake these camerascompatiblewith Mecablitzflashguns.
Each Mecablitzmanual is accompaniedby an SCA 300 SystemTable (also
avaiblefrom your local Metz dealer)that gives informationon the adapterto
be used for the specificcamera brand and flashgunmodel and the capabili-
ties providedby it.
Some of these capabilitiesare signalledin the camera'sviewfinder. The
signalsgiven differ from camerato camera. Therefore, carefullystudy the
manualand the instructionsgiven for use of camera and adapter.
The following conveniences are provided, separately or combined:
1. Flash readinessinformationin camera'sviewfinder
2. Automatic X-sync speed setting
3. Auto check in camera'sviewfinder
4. Auto mode
5. TTl-flash control
6. Manual mode
7. Programmedmode
8. Automatic aperture transfer
9. Triggeringcontrol
10. Autofocusmeasuringflash
1. Flash readiness information in camera's viewfinder: Flash readiness
is signallednot only on the flashgun, but also in the camera'sviewfinder.
SCA compatibleflashgunscan only be triggeredif flash readinessinforma-
tion is given. No flash is fired if the camera'sshutter is releasedbefore
flash readinesshas been achieved.
2. Automatic X-sync speed setting: On most systemcameras, the selec-
ted shutterspeed is automaticallyset to X sync speed as soon as flash rea-
diness is established.Some camerasretainslowershutterspeeds.lf the
flash ready light goes out after a flash was fired or if the flashgunis turned
off, the camera automaticallyresetsto its originalshutterspeed.
3. Auto check in camera's viewfinder: When using flashgunsfeaturing
automaticor TTL flash control, correctexposure(or, on some camera
models,even under-exposure)is signalledin the camera'sviewfinder.

Pleaserefer to the instructionmanualsof your Mecablitzand camera' Auto check informationis given on the flashgunand, in some cases, also in the camera'sviewfinder. 5. TTL flash control: This, too, is an automaticmode. However, other than in the ordinaryauto mode as describedin section4, a sensor built into the camera measuresthe light that reaches the surface of the film and controls the light output. Setting the flashgun to ,,TTL" is of no use if the camera does not provide this specific facility. You can use all aperturesthat can be set on the lens, taking into account the correspondingauto flash ranges. As a rule, the maximumpermissible rangefor the individualf-numbercan be read off the controlcentreor the table accompanyingthe Mecablitzmanual. The minimumflash-to-subject distanceis about 15 o/oof the maximumpermissiblerange. The film speed should be set both on the camera and on the Jlashgun. lf you wish to check the exposureprior to pictureshooting,in order to find out the best aperture setting, proceed as follows: Set the camera'sf-numberon the flashgunand triggei a flash by hand, aimingthe flashguntowardsthe subject.lf the auto check signalon the flashgunis lit, the apertureis properlyset. However,if the auto check signal remainsdark, the same proceduremust be repeated'witha smaller f-number.The aperturedeterminedin this manner is then set on the came- ra and the flashgun is reset to TTL. The above is a reliablemethod only when using lensesof 35 - 100 mm focal length, whose field of view is about the same as the sensor'scover- age angle. 6. Manual mode: As a rule, this mode is used for copy work or picture shootingsituationsthat do not permitthe measuringof light with a sensor. Serial shots are also part of the manual mode, as well as shot with partial light output or motor-drive-mode. Preferably, the X-syncspeed is set manuallyon the camera.Likewise, the aperture- which dependson the flash-to-subjectdistance- is set by hand. The flashgun(if necessary, also the adapter)shouldoperatein one of the manualmodes ,,M", ,,W" or ,,partialoutput ratio"' Please refer to the correspondingchapter in your Mecablitzinstruction manual, 4View original page 5

Such camerasautomaticallyset the aper- ture requiredand controlthe flash in the TTL mode. Detailson the programmedmode are given in the instructionsfor the corre- spondingadapter. 8. Automatic aperture transfer: Some camerasnot only signalflash readi- ness in the viewfinderand automaticallyselectthe X-syncspeed, but addi- tionallytake over the auto apertureset on the flashgun. In most cases, the f-stopset on the camera in this manner is also displayedin the camera's viewfinder. 9. Triggerlng control: lf the aperture selected for the availablelight results in a shutterspeed identicalto or fasterthan the X-syncspeed,the flash will not be triggeredwhen the camera'sshutter is released. The pictureis then taken with the light availableso that over-expoqureis prevented. 10. Autofocus measuring flash: SCA AF adapters have a built-in red light reflector which, in addition to the usual dedicated features provided, permits the emission of an autofocus measuringflash to supportthe camera'sAF system under poor lighting conditions.lf the ambient lightingdrops below a certainvalue, the auto- focus measuring flash is automaticallyactivated by the AF camera. Changing the base 301 or SGA adapter on the Mecablitz36 CT.. (see instruction manual lor Mecablitz36 CT..) Depressthe locking knob @ and tilt the unit forward(the indicatorwindow@ then displays10" ). Press the adapter catch @ and remove the base or adapter backward. Slip in the new base (or adapter)from behind as far as the stop and allow the adapter catch @ to lock into place. Then twist the unit into the desired direction, pressingthe lockingknob @. Allow it to lock in place (Fig. 1). When using the Mecablitz PowerGrip G-15 or G-16 in the dedicatedSCA mode, an SCA 300 A connectingcable is requiredin additionto the SCA adapter. This connectingcable is slippedon the SCA adapteras shown in Fig. 2. Now insert the SCA adapter into the camera's accessoryshoe and connect the plug of the cable to the sync socket providedon your Mecablitzor PowerGrip G-15or G-16.
