Minolta Maxxum 9

‘A supplement to the Magic Lantern Guide to the Minolta
Maxxum 600si

Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 9

In 1998, in celebration of its 70th anniversary, Minolta intro-
duced the Maxxum 9 (called the Dynax 9 in Europe), a profes-
sional-model camera with a built-in flash. Its enhanced features
and traditionally styled controls make the Maxxum 9 an ideal
camera for advanced amateurs and professionals alike

Created by the same design team that created the 600si, the
Maxxum 9's resemblance to it is no matter of chance. Its design
expands on the logic of its predecessor, taking it to the highest level
of sophistication while maintaining the 600si's intuitive, straight-
forward control layout. In basic operation, the two cameras are
close relatives, therefore, explanations of any functions not detailed
in this supplement can be found in the Magic Lantern Guide to the
Minolta Maxxum 600si. Use it as your basis of reference. In this
supplement, we'll review the important features of the Maxxum 9
and how the camera differs from the 600si

Introduction to the Maxxum 9

The first thing you will notice when you pick up the Maxxum 9 is
how substantial it feels. Its metal-armored body is built to the high-
est professional standards to endure the most stringent usage. The
body panels and back cover are made of SUS 304 stainless steel,
and the base and deck covers are die-cast zinc. An aluminum
casting runs through the center of the camera, securely connecting
the film rails to the lens mount and providing rigid support for a
shutter that is capable of a 1/12,000 second speed and 1/300 sec-
ond flash sync speed, the special reflection-resistant mirror box,
and the 3-point, cross-cut autofocus (AF) module. It also houses
the recently developed 4-segment flash sensor and provides abso-
lute alignment for the Maxxum 9's 100% field der with its
user-interchangeable spherical matte focusing screens. Its high-
torque drive motor produces film advance speeds as fast as
5.5 fps. The body seams and large rubber-coated metal controls
are specially designed to resist dust and moisture. Finally, the tex-
tured black finish has a scratch-resistant UV coating to protect it
from even the most rigorous shooting assignments.
