FILL.FLASH
Photographing backlit scenes is one cf the nrcst cliallenging situaticns cven etn experierrced
photographer can face. Backlighting occurs when there is Jtarge difference in the ine tight levels in
front of and behind the subject. While the exposure can be controlled to obtain a correct exposure of
the subject, this will leave the background washed out and showing little detail.
Fill{lash provides one solution to this problem by using a flash burst to increase the main subjects
illumination level. The flash burst decreases the difference in light levels and allows correct exposure
of both the subject and the background.

FLASH RANGE
To determine the flash range for the film and aperture being used, refer to the graph below. First find
the verlical line beneath the ISO of the film you are using. Follow this line down until it intersects with
the diagonal line of the lens aperture you have selected. From this point, draw a horizontal line
across the graph until it intersects line 1 (line 2 if you are using the macro panel). The distance below
this point of intersection is the maximum flash range for the aperture and film speed you are using.
For example, the bold line on the graph indicates the maximum flash range using ISO 200 film at
f5.6. In this case the maximum range of the flash would be 5m (16.4 ft.).

AF ILLUMINATOR
In low-light and low-contrast situations, the SF-1's AF illuminator activates when the shutter-release
button is pressed lightly. The illumination it projects onto the subject helps the camera's AF system {
function in situations where operation would othenrvise be impossible. The AF illuminator's rahge is
0-7-5 meters (2.3-16.4 ft.), based on Minolta's standard test method using a 50 mm lens (approx.63
135mm in the format).' mm the flash is attached 'When to the camera and AF illumination is required, either the flash's or the camera's AF
illuminator will fire depending on the amount of existing light.

Moxxum/Dynox
'When mounted on cameras with local AF area selection capability, only the center focus area should be
selected when the AF illuminator fires.
NOTES ON TAKING FLASH PICTURES
. Do not use flash if your film's ISO is higher than 1000.
' lf the subject is at the near end of the flash range when the flash is attached to the camera, the exposure may
not be correct due to the difference in alignment of the lens and flash axis. Use of off camera flasl-r is
recommended in these circumstances.
' lf the shutter is released just after the flash is charged, or it takes more than 30 seconds for the flash to reach
full charge, exposure at the far end of the flash range may not be sufficient.
'To reduce the 'red-eye effect', we recommend increasingthe overall light level in the room and using the flash
off camera.
