GETTING T.HE MOST FROM ANY EXPOSURE METER Experienced photographers know that the accuracy of a fine exposure meter is not always matched by the consistency of the other elements in obtaining a correct expos- ure....film sensitivity, shutter speed, lens apertures, developing....all of which may deviate from what you may expect. These possible variations are far more critical in color photography than in black and white, as improperly exposed color film changes in color balance as well as in "darkness" or "lightness". u L,,'J\,,L Svl t We suggest, therefore, that you invest some initial time and effort in your first roll of color film, marking a series of exposures of several normal scenes, and keeping a record of each for later reference. For example, make one exposure as indicated by the meter, then make additional exposures at Il2 and 1 full stop more and less than indicated. This procedure will enable you to get the most consistently accurate and dependable results out of your own exposure meter/camera combination.View original page 4

OPERATING BUTTON
This one button performs three functions. When pressed to its first click-stop position, it
activates the indicater needle (5) for measuring light. The second click-stop position
is used to set the needle to its zero position. The third position is for checking the
battery condition. :fi$r
FIRST.... CHECK THE BATTERY
Press the Operating Button (I2l all the way in. The needle should move to the
center of the indicator scales (2) to tfre right of the red triangle (4). (Lighting conditions
will have no effect on the needle's movement.)
Note: Under normal conditions the Mallory mercury battery provided with your Miranda
has a life of Ur-z years. During virtually its entire operating life, the battery's output
level is constant, dropping off sharply only just before final expiration. To replace
the battery, unscrew the cover of the battery compartment (20lr and remove battery.
Replace only with Mallory " RM 625 R " or " PX 13 ", available at most camera dealers.
(0ther similar-type batteries, with higher voltages, will not provide accurate readings.)
ZERO POSITION ADJUSTMENT
You can check the zero position of the indicator needle by simply pressing the operat-
ing button to the second click stop. The needle should move to 0 at the left of the
indicator scale (3). lf necessary to adjust the needle, turn the zero adjustment screw
l22l on the rear of the meter, while continuing to hold the button as before.

SETTING FOR FILM SPEED
Sat the meter for the speed of the film in your camera by rotating the film speed
adiustment 1171. (Each roll of film has its speed indicated, either on its instruction
sheet, on the box, 0r on the protective strip.) Your Miranda CaDiuS provides three
different indices to film speeds: ASA Exposure Index, ASA degree scale and Din.
(see page 3.)
To change the exposure by one step, you can either
Exposure Index .F 1. double (or halve) the ASA
(or decrease) the ASA Degree by 1 2. increase ; -.1
(or decrease) the Din by 3 3. increase
or without changing the film speed setting, y0u can either
by 1 f . increase or decrease the EV scale
or 2. double or halve the shutter speed,
stop. 3. change the lens apertt're by one full
TO MEASURE LIGHT
Your CaDiuS is designed with two ranges of sensitivity and is thus
accurate readings in both high/normal and low lighting conditions.
to take a normal range reading, rotate the computation ring 118) to
indicator index (14) within the scale range. This will cover Exposure
(at ASA 100).

To activate the needle, press the operating button to its first click stop. Hold the
button depressd until the needle stops its rnovement, then release. The needle will
remain fixed.
,For low range lighting conditions, rotate the computation ring counter-clockwise to bring
the red index 115) into the functioning range. This will cover Exposure Values of
+ n + I (at ASA 100). Using the low range is suggested whenever the needle would- Iotherwise not move beyond the scale numbers 3 or 4. 0f course, if the needle swings
beyond 12 in the low range, rotate the ring back to the normal range position.
(You will hear a click as the meter shifts from one range to the other.l
After taking a reading, rotate the computation ring to align the indicator triangle with
the dot on the scale coresponding to the position of the needle. You now have a direct
reading for various combinations of shutter speeds and lens openings. An additional
scale is provided for shutters calibrated in EV (Exposure Values).
{Any of these combinations will provide the correct exposure, but your own photographic
judgment will have to determine which specific shutter speed or lens opening will best

shutter speed or depth of field is more important t
The Cine scale (13) shows frames-per-second opposite the lens aperture scale forthe benefit
of those using motion picture cameras.

MEASURING REFLECTED LIGHT Slide the spherical diffuser (1) to the left. To measure the light reflected from the sub ject, take your reading on the area requiring the most accurate exposure. For black and white photography, the shadow areas are generally the most critical. In color, the highlight areas call for the most cai'eful reading, as they will " wash out " if over- exposed. (When taking a close reading, be careful not to block any of the light that would normally fall on the subject.) MEASURING INCIDENT LIGHT Slide the spherical diffuser to thejg!!_so that it covers the meter window. To measure the light falling on the subiect, point the meter from the position of the subject toward the camera. Then take your reading. In incioeffiht readings, keep in mino tlrll you are not measuring the particular color values, contrasts, or brightness of the subject itself. Incident light measurement is generally indicated when a scene has excessive contrasts. This can easily be determined with your Miranda CaDiuS because of its highly selective and accurate measuring area for reflected light measurement. CONVERSION SCALE 0n the back of your Miranda rneter is a conversion table (2Il for readings taken by incident light and reflected light measurement. You thus have a practical means for obtaining a direct reading for footcandles and lumens according to the readings on the meter.View original page 10

RECIPROCITY EFFECT
The sensitivity (speed) and color balance of reversal color films are based upon the
normal or average length of exposures, such as within a few seconds. Although your
Mirandameterwi||givey0uaccuratereadingsunderabnorma||ydim|ightconditions,
these readings may call for extended exposures that may possibly exceed the tolerance
of color film. (These tolerances vary by type and make of color film.) lt is suggested,
therefore, that if you anticipate making unusually long exposures 0n color film, you ,
should write to its manufacturer for data on exposure and filter correction under these
conditions. Black and white films can generally be exposed indicated
MIRANDA SCALES 6uiltu5-u)
Shutter speeds are divided on the scale into four segments : from 1/2 second to 1/4000,
from 1 second to 30 seconds, from I minute to 30 minutes, from t hour to B hours.
For motion pictures, use the scale showing cine frames per second (13), which are aligned
with the equivalent shutter speeds for still cameras. I
