The remarkably precise Miranda Cadius II Exposure Meter can measure light of
tremendous variation in intensity, f rom dazzling brilliant sunlight to moonliBht scenes. I
It is so simple to operate that even beginners will enjoy using the cadius II.
The reflex viewfinder shows you the exact area being read by the highly sensitive
icadmium sulf ide (CDS) photo cell. The Telephoto Beam Limiter enhances the versa-
tility of the meter for telephoto photography.
The principle of the cadmium sulf ide exposure meter differs markedly from the
conventional selenium cell type. The "CDS" meter is powered by a miniature, long-
life mercury battery that activates the photo-conductive cell, which in turn moves
the indicator needle, when the operating button in pressed
Long exposures to excessively bright light should be avoided, as this will tend to
affect the cell's responsiveness. 0ther than this simple precaution, you need only l
give your cadius II Meter the same care you would give your camera. r

www.butkus.us FACTS ABOUT EXPOSURE METERS Experienced photographers are awaie that the accuracy of a fine exposure meter is not always matched by the consistency of the other elements in obtaining a correct exposure " " Film sensitivity, shutter speed, lens apertures, developing. . all of which may deviate f rom what you may expect. These possible variations are f ar more critical in color photography thanin black and white, as color baiance as well as "darkness" or "lightness" are affectei byexposure. We therefore, suggest that you invest some initial timeand effort inacquainting your- self with your new Miranda Cadius II Exposure Meter. lndeed, rt is an excellent idea to keep a record of the exposures made with your first roll of color film for later reference. For example, make one exposure as indicated bythe meter, then additional exposures should be made at I/2 and I full stop more and less than indicated. This procedure will enable you to get consistently accurate and dependable results for your own exposure meter /camera combination.View original page 3

First """Check The Battery.
Pressing the operating button (L2) all the way in, (position"B"), should move the
needle to the right of the red triangle at the center of the indicator scale(a). Ligh-
ting conditions will have no affect on the needle's movement. Under normal conditi-
ons the mercury batteries supplied with your Cadius Exposure Meter have a life IIexpectancy of | 1/2 to 2 years. During virtually all of its operating life the battery's
output level will remain constant, dropping off sharply just before expiring. Replace
B0TH batteries together. Replace only with Mallory "RM625 R;' available at most
camera dealers. (Similar-size battenes, of higher voltages, should not be used as
they will prevent accurate readings).
Zer o Adj ust ment .
Pressing tre operating butfon to the second click stop, (position "0"), the indicating
needle(5) should move to the "0"(3) at the left of the indicator scale. Ac,ljustment
of the needle, when necessary, is accomplished by turning the Tero adjustment screw
(27), on the back of the meter, while continuing to hold the button in the"0" adjust -
ment position.
Film Speed Sett ings.
Each roll of f ilm has its speed indicated either on the instruction sheet, on the box,
provides three different indices ofor on the protective strip. Your Miranda Cadius II

Set the meter for the speed of the f ilm in your camera by rotating the f ilm speed
adjustment (17) at the center of the computer dial (lg) .
To change the exposure by one stop, you can either.
1. double (or halve) the ASA Exposure Index
2. increase (or decrease) tne nSn Degree by I
3. increase (or decrease) ttre DIN by 3
0r without changing the f ilm speed setting, you can either:
f. increase (or decrease) tne EV scale by I
2. double (or halve) the shutter speed
3. change the lens aperture by one full sbp.
Measuring Light.
Your Miranda Cadius II is designed with two sensitivity ranges and is thus able to
provide accurate readings in both normal and low lighting conditions. For normal range
readings, rotate the computer dial to bring the green indicator index (14) within the
scafe range. The sensitivity range, being used, is indicated by a color coated signal
g_20 at the left side of the meter scale (23).This will cover Exposure Values of

Press the operating button to the "R" position (first click stop), holding the button
until the needle stops its its movement, then release it. The needle will remain locked in place.
For low light range readings, rotate the computer dial counter-clockwise to bring
the red index (15) into the functioning range. This will cover Exposure Vatues of-l- * l0(at ASA100). The low range is used whenever the needle does not movebeyond
the scale numbers 3 or 4. Of course, if the needle swings beyond 12 on the low
I range, rotate the computer dial back to the normal, green range position.
NoTE: You will hear a click as the meter shifts from one range to the other.
I After refeasing the operating button, rotate the computer dial to align the indlcator
index with the dot on the scale corresponding to the position of the needle. you now
have a direct reading of various combinations of shutter speeds and lens openings.
An additional scale is provided for shutters calibrated in EV(Exposure Values).
Any shutter of the speed/lens opening combinations will provide the correct exposure,
your photographicI but judgment own will determine which specific combination will
best suit he particular requirements of the picture you are taking. For example, when
photographing high speed action a high shutter speed is required with its correspon_l\. ding large diaphragm opening. A scene of great depth will require a small openilD8'
for greater depth of field, and a corresponding slower shutter speed.View original page 10Page 11 · Read text

For motion picture cameras the Cine scale (13) shows frames per second opposite
the correct lens aperture.
Telephoto Beam Limiter.
30'angle of light acceptance, for standard photography andThe Cadius II utilizes a
15" for telephoto lenses. The simple attachment of the Beam Limiter (24) to the
meter automatically adjusts the light acceptance angle to 15'.
A f rarne-line within the viewf inder (11) shows the area measured by the Beam Limiter. ,!!
Light measurements are made in the same manner as though the Beam Limiter were rl
not attached. Exposure readings, however, should be made by aligning the indicator I
needle with tre green triangle(20) for normal range and red triangle(21)for low range.
Ref lected Light M easurements.
The spherical diffuser (l) is kept to the left side of the meter, uncovering the light
cell, for reflected light measurements. Point the meter toward the subject, taking
your readings on the area requiring the most accurate exposure. For black and white
photographyphotography the shadow areas are generally the most critical. Color
usually calls for careful readings of highlight areas. Close-up readings are most
useful : however, be certain not to block any of the light falling on the subject.View original page 11Page 12 · Read text

Incident Light M easurements.
The spherical diffuser is placed at the center of the meter, covering the light cell,
for incident light measurements. This type of measurement is made of the light
falling upon the subject: therefore, point the meter f rom the position of the subject
toward the camera position. Keep in mind that when taking incident light readings,
I
I you are not measuring the particular color values, contrasts or brightness of the
subject itself . Incident light measurements are generally indicated when a subject
has excessive contrasts. This can easily be determined with your Miranda Cadius II
I' with its highly selective and accurate measuring area for ref lected light meas-
I urements.
Conversion Table.
A table of foot candle and Lux values (26) converted f rom EV scale numerals is
located on the back of the meter. Set the ASA Exposure Index at 100 and press
the operating button to the "R" position. Hold the button until the needle stops, and
then release. Rotate the computer dial to align the proper indicator with the dot on
the scale corresponding to the position of the needle, and note the EV value on the
computer dial. Referring to the Table on the back of the Cadius IL the Lux and
ft-cd value will be found opposite the corresponding EV value listed.View original page 12Page 13 · Read text

Film speeds (sensitivity), as well as color balance of color films, are based upon

readings under very dim lighting conditions, which may call for extended exposures
that may possibly exceed the tolerances of the f ilm. These tolerances vary according
to the type and make of the film, particularly color films. We suggest, therefore,
4ithat if you anticipate making unusually long exposures, that you write to the I
.tmanufacturer, of the film, for data on exposure and filter corrections for long
exposures. Black arid white films have considerably greater tolerances than color \
films, and can generally be exposed as indicated. ,

Shutter speeds are divided on the scale into four segments: from l/2 second to
1/40001h, from l second to 30 seconds, from l minute to 30 minutes, from t hour
to 8 hours. Cine Scale, for motion picture cameras, shows frames per second based
upon the equivalent shutter speed for still cameras. Check your motion picture
camera to verify these equivalents.View original page 13Page 14 · Read text
