Normal FOCUSINGTHE CAMERA operating
position
Tlre camera may be focused in three ways:
1. By the focusing scale. Position
normale
2. By the coupled rangefinder. de prise de vue
3. By the ground-glass screen.
Before leaving the factory the focusing scale and the
rangefinder cam plate for each lens are accurately co-
ordinated with the ground-glass screen. Whichever method
of focusing is used the picture will be in sharp focus provided
that:
(a) The lens standard is engaged in the correct infinity
stop.
(b) The lens standard is vertical-that is, in its normal
position.
(c) The correct rangefinder cam plate is used-that is,
the cam plate with the same serial number as the lens.
(d) The camera back is flush with the back of the camera
body-that is, in the normal position.
(e) The dark slides are of correct register.
Focusing scales and rangefinder cam plates can only
be used with the lens for which they have been calibrated-
they will not be correct for any other lens even from the same
manufacturer and of the same nominal focal length.
It must be appreciated that if it is necessary to tilt or swing
the back of the camera, to tilt or swing the lens, or to drop

THE RANGEFINDER
The accuracy of a rangefinder depends on the length of its

where it is protected by a sturdy cover.
The rangefinder is coupled to the foq, tsing slides by gn
arm which-is fixed to the moving prism. The extremity of the
arm engages-plateswith a cam plate attached to the focusing slides.
The cah are accurately cut so as to coincide with the
actual (and not just the nominal) focal length of each lens.
The cam plates are engraved with the serial number of the
tens to which they belong. lt is essential that a cam plate
be used with the l-enswhich carries the same serial number
because it will not work with any other lens' even of the same
nominal focal length and made by the same manufacturer.
Two images are visible in the eye-piece of the rangefindgt.
The first image is amber coloured and is a fixed image, the

prism. By racking the slides back and forth the two images
will merge o r separate. When the two images are super-
imposed- the camera is in focus. To ensure accyracy the
circle of white light should be kept in the centre of the range-
fi nder eye-piece.
lf the lens is changed the cam plate must also be changed

1. Select the cam with the same serial number as the new

2. Use the milled edge to unscrew the captive cam-retaining
screw.
3. Lift existing plate from dowel pins and replace with new
cam plate.
4. Screw up cam-retainingscrew.
The rangefinder is so robust that its accu racy is unlikely
to be affected even if the camera is dropped. However, it is
possible to upset the lateral adjustment of the images by
iough treatment. Even though the images are laterally out of
alignment it will not prevent accurate focusing. Lateral dis- Interchangeable cam assembly
