FOREWORD Designed to fit any Nikon F2 camera, the Pho- tomic Finder DP-2 incorporatesa precise center- weighted CdS exposure metering system coupled to the lens-aperture and shutter-speed controls. lnstead of the usual meter needle, light-emitting diodes in the viewfinder glow bright red in two signal lights to indicate correct exposure. The signal lights are also visible on top of the finder. Besidesproviding easy-to-seemetering information even in poor light, the finder extends meter sensitivity down to EV -2 (8 secondsat f 11.4 with a n A S A 1 0 0 f i l m ) . This is done each time the lens is attached or changedas
follows:
Position the lens in the camera's bayonet mount so that
the indicator dots on the lens and the camera body are
aligned.Grasp the lens by the white milled ring and twist
it counterclockwiseuntil it clicks into place. Turn the
aperture ring all the way to the minimum aperturesetting
(largest f/number), then all the way in the opposite
direction. This step automaticallyfits the coupling pin of
the Photomic finder into the coupling prong on the lens
and adjuststhe maximum apertureof the lens.

The above adiustment can. be verified by checking the
maximum aperture indicator in the window on the
Photomic finder. The scale has a range from f l'1.2 to
f 15.6.For example,if the 24 mm f 12.8 lens is mounted on
the camera,2.8 should appearin the window.

EXPOSUREMEASUREMENT(full-aperturemethod)
The exposure meter of the Photomic finder features a
center-weightedthru-the-lensmetering system coupled to
the shutter speed and aperture controls. The meter reads
the light over the entire focusing screen but favors a
central area. This allows you to make precise reading of
the selectedsubiect area.
S w i t c h i n g t h e M e t e r O n
The film-advance lever also servesas an on-off switch for
the exposure meter. To turn the meter on, pull out the
lever just enough to uncover the red dot on top of the
camera. When the meter is not in use, pressthe lever flush
againstthe camera body to avoid battery drain.

DeterminingExposure
The Photomic finder has two signal lights in the view-
finder, one with the plus (+) sign for overexposure, the
other with the minus (-) sign for underexposure. To
determine the correct exposure, first switch on the meter
and either of the two signal lights glows. Then turn the
aperture ring and/or shutter-speed selector until both
signallightsglow.
The signal lights are arrow-shapedso that by the direction
the arrows point you will know at a glance which
exposure control, the aperture ring or the shutter-speed
selector, is to be rotated for correct exposure. For added
convenience, the actual shutter speed and the aperture
selectedalso appear in the viewfinder.Either the aperture
ring or the shutter-speed selector (except for speeds
slower than 1/80 second) permits reliable intermediate
settings for more precise exposure of less than one
f/number. The signal lights also appear on top of the
finder for conveniencewhen the camera is held at waist
level or mounted on a tripod. ln low light, the two signal
lights may light up at "B" setting on the shutter-speed
scale.lf so, correct exposuretime is 2 seconds.

Choiceof Shutter-Speed/Lens-Aperture
Combinations
The amount of light reaching the film is determined by a
combination of lens aperture and shutter speed.Since the
two are interrelated, different combinations will give the
same amount of exposure. The best combination depends
on the results desired. Use fast shutter speeds to freeze
motion or slow ones to qeate deliberate blur. Small
apertures give greater depth of field, large ones let the
subject stand out againstan out-of-focus background.
The table below shows how the aperture and shutter
speed are interrelated; all combinations givd the same
exposu re.

fne Photomic finder allows you to meter a light levelI
D requiring2- to 1O-secondexposuretime at the maximum
apertureof the lens in use. First set the shutter-speedscale
at " 8". Turn the shutter-speedselector wh ile depressing
the locking button in the center of the ASA film-speed
dial until both signal lights glow. Read off the number on
the extra-long shutter-speedscale which appearsopposite
the white dot. Then set the shutter at the indicatedtime
using the self-timer on the camera (see the Nikon F2 or
F2 Photomic instruction manual). When measurementis
made in this way, the shutter speed visible in the view-
finder rests at "B" regardlessof the number on the extra-
long shutter scaleappearingoppositethe white dot.
Rememberthat at lighting levelslower than EV 0 (e.g.,2
secondsat f 11.4with ASA 100 film), the exposure meter o 8 4 2
takes 2 to 3 minutes to reach a steady reading.

MeteringRange
lf the two signal lights do not light up even after all
possible lens-aperture/shutter-speedcombinations have
been tried, then the availablelight is too bright or too dim
for the meter's range. Switch to a new film that matches
the availablelight; or mount a neutral density filter onto
the lens to cut down on the amount of light; or use
artificial lightingto increaseluminosity,whateverthe case
may be. With the 50 mm f 11.4 lens and a film speed of
ASA 100, the meter's effective range extends f rom f 11.4
at 8 secondsto f/8 at 1l2OO0second.

1 9 UnusualLight Situations When there are severebrightnessdifferences between the subjectand the background, you will often obtain better resultsby setting up the camera so that the subject fills the central part of the viewfinder during exposure measurement. For example, if the picture includes an unusuallybright sourceof light, such as a light bulb, move the camera to center the subject for reading, or if accessible, move in on the subject to take a close-up readingof the part you want to emphasize, and then move back until the desired composition appearsin the viewfinder. For landscapeswhich include an expanseof sky, tilt the cameradownward during measurementto prevent under- exposurecausedby the bright skylight. For backlightedsubjects, move up close to and include dark areasof the subjectin your reading. &View original page 20

The finder is designedto minimize the effect of light entering
through the finder eyepieceunder normal conditions. How-

recommended to insure complete exclusion of stray light:

EXPOSUREMEASUREMENT: SPECIALCASES S t o p - D o w n E x p o s u r e M e a s u r e m e n t With the following lenses and accessories,full-aperture exposure measurement is not possible, either becausethe lens has no auto-diaphragmor becausethe diaphragmwill not couple with the meter. Therefore, the stop-down method must be used. This means measuringexposure with the lens aperture diaphragm stopped down to the taking aperture. First, push the coupling pin up into the Photomic finder with a coin or similar obiect so that the f/number 5.6 appearsin the maximum apertureindicator window.
