Die not-
tung gebracht werden. \ P u+k45';

leuchtung).

Es be-

It is almost impossible to produce creative photographs using just one single light source-.An addi-
tional "fill-in" source is 6ssential. For narid held outdoor macro photography, to use the usual
reflectors such as white card and polystyrene sheets would take a long time, requiring extensive
preparations and possibly the additionat hgtp of an assistant. When photographing "macro life" on
iocition, there is no spar6 time to prepare for a shot. Preparations must be made beforehand away
from the location.
NOVOFLEX have made new developments to their proven and well established Macro-Flash System
as follows:
a One lightsource as modelling light, the second one to fill-in hard and deep shadows.
b The fill-in light can be adiusted to brighten the background. p"{Kas - ,rt
c Texture, cotour and shape can be emphasised by careful lighting.
d Any combination of top and side lighting can be arranged to create natural sunlight effects.
e Both flash units can be set at similar angles to create a "ringflash" effect.
by directing both flashes on to a reflective background.f A "contre-iour" effect can be achieved Existing light can enhance or reduce the effects. Rim lighting enhances texture and surface
structure.
NOVOFLE( have developed new designs to meet these demands: I
1 . Two flash units are used. One is connected to the camera's sync socket via a coiled sync cable and
the other unit, with its built-in slave, flashes simultaneously when the first unit is discharged.
2. Wth this flash outfit, the angle, distance, direction and light output can be adjusted as required.
3. A single flash unit can be used on its own, if required.
4. By focusing in the macro-photography, a certain lenght of additional extension will be necessary.
This deteniines the correbt aperture, seen in the exposure table. TTL metering may be inaccurate,
since it also measures the background and surrounding area brightness.
S. Creative and most interesting pictures can be taken by independently adjusting the angle and dis- - tances of the NOVOFLEX Macro-flashes, instead of the stereo-type shadowless presentations
proOuced by ringflash. Rigid macro-flash and^rin^gflash- systemg hgv-g their uses, but offer no
iacitities for breative and vdried lighting. The NOVOFLEX Macro-flash X-Set can be used to give
shadowless ringflash-type lighting as well as the more interesting effects described.

Instructions
Assembling the Unit
1 . Screw the-appropriate lens ring @ on to the lens e. g. X 52x0.75. Push the clamping ring @ on to the
lens ring @ and position it before tightening the clamping ring with the clamping sciew @.
2.The two angle brackets @ are mounted on the carrier @ with locking plate @ and screw @.
3. The two flash guns^@ + @ are fitted on the tilt heads @ and attached to the angle brackets @ via the
accessory shoes (D. The arms can be rotated through 3600 and locked in any position. For further
flexibility the flashgun can be fitted to the accessory shoe @. See illustration.
4. Connect the sync cabte @ between the socket of the flashgun @ and the camera's flash sync
socket. The "servo" flashgun @ requires no cable connection. With the operation modeswitch set
to "S", check the auto-function with a test flash, making sure that both flashguns @ and @
discharge at the same instant.
5. Thecamerashutterspeedsettingforflashsyncisgivenbythecameramanufacturer,andisusually
between 1/60 1/125 seconds. The exposure is therefore determined by the f stop. Both - NOVOFLEX Macro-flashes haveaGN 20 m/60ft. This output can be reduced with the opal diffusers
O which are supplied.
One opal diffuser reduces the light output of the flashgun by one f stop, as well as producing a
softer and more even light distribution. Only slight pressure is needed to attach the opal diffusion
screen between the two retaining pins on the reflector. Removing the screen is equally simple.
6. We have compiled an exposure guide table to give correct exposures in the close-up and macro
range. The exposure data may be successfully applied, providing that onlyone flashgun is directly
illuminating the object. In cases where both flashguns are the main illumination, reduce the
1 f stop and/or attaching an additional opal screen. exposure by stopping down 1/z -
The exposure table is based on a film speed of 21DlN/100 ASA. For a film speed of 18 DIN/50 ASA
open-up the aperture by 1 f stop, or alternatively use one opal screen less than indicated. For 15 DIN/
25 ASA emulsions open up one stop and remove one opal screen.

For convenience all measurements are given at their lower values. Possible variation in the
engravings on the guide rods are duetothe differences in the camera types. When using 50 - 55 mm
camera lenses, base settings as for 60 mm lensheads. Always make a few test exposures.
Variations to the tables for macro4hotography must be taken into consideration; bright subjects
require shorter exposures and dark subjects a longer exposure time than indicated. lf the subject
justifies it, take a series of difterent exposures, changing f. stop and/orflash position. This can result
in most interesting and exciting effects.
