INTRODUCTION:
The 2000 Series Strobes
were developed specifically
for the underwater
photographer by the leader
in the field, Oceanic. Utiliz-
itrg components specially
designed for underwater
work, Oceanic has built
these strobes to be the
finest submersible units in
-the world! These strobes have been thoroughly checked for all aspects of
operation at the factory. All units are tested in a water environ-
ment to the depth of 350-ft. to insure their water-tight integrity.
Upon receipt of your new strobe, check for any possible freight
damage. If, in testing your new unit, any damage is apparent,
return it as soon as possible to your dealer or directly to Oceanic.
The 2001, 2002 and 2003 strobes are factory sealed to eliminate
the flooding inherent to many underwater strobes.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Oceanic strobe units are designed for rugged use in a marine en-
vironment, but should be given the care of a delicate instrument.
All units should be factory serviced once a year for a nominal fee.
This will insure lasting service. IF THE CHARGER CAP IS
FORGOTTEN OR AN O.RI
IffiEADY-LIGHT VIEW WINDOW USING A SMALL
PAIR OF PLIERS. THE WATER CAN DRAIN OUT
THROUGH THIS PORT. IF IT IS SALT WATER, THE UNIT
SHOULD BE RINSED WITH FRESH WATER, THEN
DRAINED AND FILLED WITH ALCOHOL. SCREW THE
VIEW WINDOW INTO PLACE, AND IMMEDIATELY SHIP
TO OCEANIC FOR SERVICING. FOLLOW THIS PRO-
CEDURE TO MINIMIZE ANY POSSIBLE REPAIR
CHARGES.
GUIDE NUMBERS:
Guide numbers are a measurement of light output used to
calculate f/stop settings. To calculate an exposure knowing the
guide number (GN) and the prescribed distance (D): Divide the
distance into the guide number to arrive at the proper aperture
setting" GN : f/stop D-
The underwater guide numbers are computed with a filter (or
bugger) factor of 3.5. This is an average of tropical waters (visibili-
ty up to 150') and waters of 10 to 30 foot visibility. THIS FAC-
TOR MAY VARY DUE TO YOUR PARTICULAR WATER
CONDITIONS.
If your film choice is not the same as the examples on our ex-
posure guide, a new guide number can be calculated in the follow-
ing manner: Digitally signed by mike butkus

OPERATION
Your OS-2000 unit uses (2) C-cell batteries (alkaline required to
operate to full specification). To install the batteries, follow this
procedure:
1. Unscrew the knurled chrome knob at the rear of the unit. This
allows separation of the rear battery compartment, and the
front module which contains the electronics. The two halves
are connected by a PC Cord. BE_ VEFJ CAREFUL NOT TO
PULL THE UNITS APART BEYOND THE LENGTH OF
the PC Cord in the back half. Please notice that the unit is seal-
ed by a main body o-ring which must be kept clean of all
foreign particles. The rear knob has an o-ring on the under
side, and the shaft has an o-ring seal in the rear section. The
shaft is retained by a cir-clip. The shaft o-ring is a secondary
seal.
After separating the two halves, take your new C-cell alkaline
batteries (not supplied), and install. Please observe polarity
markings on the battery holders. THE POLARITY DIREC-
TIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED OR THE UNIT WILL NOT
OPERATE, AND COULD POSSIBLY BE DAMAGED. Plug
t the cord is
down between the two battery holders when putting the two
halves together. The proper alignment of the front and back
halves is when the mounting pad is in alignment with the on-
off switch. Give the o-ring a final check, and put the two halves
together. Screw the holding bolt into the front half. Tighten
down snug. Only light pressure is necessary on the main body
o-ring for proper sealing. Never use any tools on the rear knob.
THIS WILL VOID ANY AND ALL WARRANTIES.
After the two halves are together, turn the unit on. It may
take up to 10-15 seconds initially for the ready light to go on
the first time.
DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. UNSCREW THE ELECTRONIC PLATE; AS THE
CAPACITORS STORE HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICITY.View original page 7Page 8 · Read text
2. UNSCREW OR TIGHTEN THE BULKHEADwww.butkus.usCONNEC.
TOR FOR THE CORD; AS THIS CAN DAMAGE THE
THREADS IN THE CYCOLAC HOUSING.
3. REMOVE THE FRONT DOME.

OS-2001 and OS-2003 INTRODUCTION
The 20OL and 2003 strobes are designed to till the needs of the
profession_al and novice alike. These units recharge in only four (4)
hours, and will p-rovide over 400 flashes on a single chaige (2008
on low power). The new Oceanic electronics make ttre 2001 series
strobes the most dependable underwater strobes made. The opa-
que dome s_oftens the light without losing intensity. This new
provides a soft even light to allow professional studio type{opqlighting.

OPERATION
For use of your Oceanic 2002 Strobe in the automatic mode, the
following procedure should be followed:
1. The 2002 Strobe auto-eye has three settings. Each has an
f/stop value for the particular film you plan to use. cl"osE-up pHoTocRApHy (EXTENSION TUBES, ETC.)
SHOULD BE DONE ON THE MANUAL MODE. ASA 25
FILM FOR CLOSE.UPS ONLY.
ASA 64 : CLEAR f/3.5 ASA 160 : f/5.6
WHITE f.t5.6 f/8
YELLOW f/11 flL6
2. It is suggested for best results that the 200 z be used in con-
junction with an accurate light meter.
3. Photographing with the 2002 during daylight hours allows use
for flash fills or sole source lighting. The following is a step by
step procedure for automatic exposure photography undei-
water.
A. with an accurate light meter, take a meter reading of your
proposed subject.
B. The auto-eye must be set on an f/stop equal to or greater
than the f/stop setting on the meter (shutter speed must be
1/60 of a second).
c. The f/stop on your camera lens must be set on the same
f/stop as the value on the auto-eye.
D. With these settings virtually all distances will be properly
exposed.
EXAMPLE (ASA 64 FrLM)
l. Light meter reading 1/60 at f.l4
2. Set auto-eye on white (or f/5.6)
3. Set camera on f/5.6
4. Focus and photograph
SOLE SOURCE
A. To reduce the amount of ambient light, increase the aperture
setting on the auto-eye to the next stop (from clear to white or
white to yellow). Also increase the f/slop on the camera. (In-
crease in aperture is by number f/8 to f/11, not by size of aper-
ture.)View original page 11Page 12 · Read text
B. One must remember that increasing the aperturewww.butkus.usreduces the
range in terms of distance. The effective range at f./ll is three
feet. While the effective range at f.15.6 is five feet.
C. Using the 2002 at night you should follow the outline below:
1. Distances up to three feet, use the yellow setting on the
auto-eye and f/l1 on the camera.
2. Beyond three feet, use the white setting on the auto-eye
and f/5.6 on the camera.
(ALL EXAMPLES AND PROCEDURES OUTLINED ARE
FOR ASA 64 FrLM)
REMEMBER: YOUR OCEANIC 2OO2 CAN ALSO BE USED
ON AUTOMATIC FOR BACK AND SIDE LIGHTING SITUA.
TIONS WITH VERY EFFECTIVE RESULTS.

Section VI
OPERATION OF STROBES:
The Oceanic strobes are shipped in a semi-discharged state and
possibly have not been fired for some time. Please follow these
steps prior to in-water use:
CHARGING:
1. Remove the black delrin knob on the top of the unit, which is
o-ring sealed. This gains access to the charger jack.
2. Plug the charger in a 110-volt outlet, andplugthe mating con-
nector into the strobe jack. EE SURE THE SWITCH IS IN-
THE OFF POSITION!!!
3. will bring the batteries up to at least
50Vo of charge.
4. Prior to replacing the cap, check the o-ring. The o-ring should
be checked each and every time it is removed for any foreign
particles and lubricated with a very small amount of silicone
grease (not spray).
When replacing the cap, set it squarely in the threaded hole to
properly align the threads and screw in slowly. It is possible to
cross threads if this is not done properly and carefully. Screw
down until snug and you feel compression to the o-ring. Do not
over-tighten or use any tool to tighten the cap.View original page 12Page 13 · Read text
FORMING THE CAPACITOR:
1. Like all electronic flash units, the Oceanic strobes have an
energy storage capacitor that stores the electrical energJr re-
quired by the flash tube. When your flash is new, or has not
been used for 30 days or more, it is normal for the capacitor to
lose some of its ability to store electrical enerry, or deform. A
deformed capacitor causes longer recycle time for the first few
flashes, and less flashes per battery charge. The capacitor is
reformed after about an hour of charging. Flashing the unit a
few times will accelerate forming the capacitor. Wait about 30
seconds between flashes. These simple steps will insure your
. exposure guide on the first picture of a new'roll of film if the
strobe has not been fired for some time.
2. To fire the unit with a Nikonos connector, place the connector
in the Nikonos camera and fire the camera shutter release.
3. To fire the unit with an EO cord, just jump the two contacts
with an insulated piece of wire or with the blade of a knife or
screwdriver.
STROBE TO CAMERA CONNECTIONS:
1. Prior to plugging in your EO connector, it should be greased
with Oceanic Silicone Grease. (AVOID USE OF SILICONE
SPRAY.)
2. The Nikonos connector o-ring should be checked for any
foreign particles and lubricated with Oceanic Silicone Grease.
Section VII
MAINTENANCE
The Oceanic 2000 Series Strobes are, because of the factory seal-
ing, almost maintenance free. Follow these instructions and you
will experience trouble-free functioning of your strobe.
After each use wash the unit thoroughly in clean fresh water. If
your strobe has a Nikonos connector, wash it while it is attached
to the camera. Allow the strobe to drain from its front ring by
standing it on its front for a time.
Store in a cool, dry area. If the strobe is to be stored for a length
of time, completely charge it, be sure it is dry, and store it with the
charge cap screwed down only lightly.View original page 13Page 14 · Read text
www.butkus.us O-rings, cords, and connectors should be lubricated regularly
with a thin coat of high vacuum silicone grease. Avoid using
silicone spray.
The outer housing appearance can be enhanced with an occa-
sional light application of furniture polish.

Section VIII
HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS
1. The major cause of improperly exposed photos is due to poin-
ting the strobe in the wrong direction.
2. A rinse of 1 part white vinegar and 4 parts water will readily
dissolve salt deposits on equipment.
3. Frequently clean male and female EO connectors with a little
stronger solution of the same combination. After this cleaning,
lightly coat with high vacuum silicone grease.
4. Strobe misfiring can generally be traced to shorts in P.C. wir-
ing or Nikonos connectors.
5. Filrn is the least expensive route to good photos, bracket all
shots. (Shoot one f/stop on either side of your chosen
exposure.)
Familiarize yourself with all equipment under controlled cir-
cumstances, as in a swimming pool.
7. Beginning photographers will be more successful with ex-
posures if they initially concentrate on close-up shots.
8. Always test strobe and strobe connections before loading the
film in the camera.
9. Articulating arms, like the Ball Joint Arm, allow special
lighting as if the strobe was being handheld.View original page 14Page 15 · Read text
