BCS 44 STUDIO What you ought to know about your BCS 44 STUDIO flash unit OSRAMthe lightspecialistsintroduceda new reflectortechniquewith their "STUDlO" series, providinga fundamentalimprovementin flash photography. The new BCS 44 STUDIOmodel is the logicalresultof this innovation. Chief advantages of the BCS 44 STUDIO Double swivel reflector The new double reflectorO offers majoradvantagesin medium-sizedrooms producing neutralreflection. Not only does it permit direct or indirectilluminationwith one flash but also allows for simultaneousdirect and indirectlighting. This arrangementgives illuminationin depth and cuts out heavy shadows. TheBCS44refleclorisidealforstudiolightingandwillswivelcontinuouslyintwoaxes: Verticallyby 75oand horizontallyby almost 120"to either side. Practicallyevery kind of direct and indirect lightingcan be obtained with this full-scaleswivel reflector.A wide- anglediffuser can be additionallyswung into positionfor even illuminationin the very corners of ultra-wideangles. Series computer - Garefully metered light The sensor@ must be directed at the subject during flash exposure. The light from the reflectoris thrown back by the subject and measured by the sensor @.The flash is switchedoff on reachingthe light output needed for correct film expo- sure.As long as the subject is within the operatingrange of the computer apertureset- ting the unit will automaticallyprovide correct exposure, without regard to distance. Likethe computer aperture, the camera aperture, once set, need not be adjustedagain to changingrange. When, however, the flash is on manualthe camera aperturehas to be steadilyadjusted to all changes. The BCS 44 STUDIO can be programmed for three different apertures. The seriescomputer circuitryserves to switch off the flash as soon as the exact expo- sure output is reached. The unneeded energy is stored and retainedfor additionalf la- shes.As a result, recyclingis fast and battery/accumulatoreff iciency is high, especially in the close-up range. SERVO flash The unit featuresa SERVOf lash which can be switched on when the BCS 44 STUDIOis to be fired cordlesslyfrom another electronic flash gun. Gomputer center Having triggered a trial flash you can consult the back of the unit for the aperture needed for that particularsituation. This feature is particularlyhelpfulfor indirectflash exposures. Process-controlled trigger ci rcuit This feature automaticallyswitches off the unit after use, to save the batteries. Instructions for use Inserting the batteries The BCS 44 STUDIOcan be powered optionally by four 1.5V alkaline-manganesemi- gnon cells size AA or four nickel-cadmiumaccumulatorsof equivalentsize. The battery compartment screw O may be opened with the aid of a coin. Be sure to insertthe batteriesto suit the polarity marks */-. lmportant Replace batteries as soon as the recycling time exceeds 60 sec. lmmediately exchangethe whole set. It is advisableto remove the batteriesif the unit is to be stored for some length of time. Alkaline or nickel-cadmium batteries? Alkalinebatterieshave the advantagethat they supply more f lashesper unit.Although NC accumulatorsproduce fewer flashesthey provide the BCS 44 STUDIOwith faster recycling. They can be rechargedand therefore are more economical in the long term. Connecting to camera The camera bracket @ can be fastened optionally at left or right of flash unit handle. Pushbottom into the bayonet socket on the bracket and turn untilit can be felt to latch.View original page 4

Indirect flash exposures
Directflash exposuressometimesproduce undesirablyheavy shadowswhich can be
avoidedby bouncingthe f lashoff the ceiling,a wall or a reflectingscreen.Thissoftens
the illumination.
Thanksto the uniquedesignof the BCS 44 STUDIOit is possibleto adjustthe reflector
so that
- some of the light acts direct (about 2Oo/otorwards)and
some acts indirect(about 80% upwardsfor fillingin), or so that
- the entire amount of light is directed upwards.
Turningthe adjustingknob @ in the directionof the arrow at the left-handside of the
flash head swivelsupwardsthat part of the reflectorthat is needed for bounce light.
Thisangle should never drop below 60" (latch position).Note the angles@ on the unit
f or adjustment. In orderto swivelthe reflectorf ully upwards, turn the reflectoritselfand
simultaneouslypushthe reflectorkey @ down-wards.f, and hold in position.Swivelling
the reflectorback restoresthe reflectorkey to its startingpositionf,.
It is impossibleto indicatethe exact range limits because the amount of reflection
dependsconsiderablyon the conditionof the reflectingsurfaces.
Tips for indirect flash exposures
Pleasenote that the reflectingsurface must be white for color exposuresbecause
colorswill otherwisebe changed.Always set the power selectorto guide number 44.
The BCS 44 STUDIOoffers simultaneousdirect and indirectlighting, and will produce
exposuresfeaturingstudio-standardillumination(Fig.1).
In view of the reflectionprovidedindoors, indirectf lashexposuresare normallyadvis-
able only up to a range of about 4.5 m, for a maximum room heightof 3-3.5 m if ig. Z).
The light may be reflectedoff a wall if the ceitingis too high (Fig.3).
In orderto preventthe upperpart of the subjectf rom beingstruckdirectby bouncelight
you shouldensurethat the angleselectedfor indirectflashexposuresinvolvingnormal
focal length does not drop below 60. (Fig.4).
ln the close-uprangebetween1.0and 2.Omyou will need the 75" position(stop)f or the
direct/indirectreflectorsetting (Fig.5).
Indirect flash exposures with computer
Aperture f 5.6 or f 2.8 is recommended in conjunctionwith guide number 44 and
21 DIN/100ASA.Whether the amount of lightwill suffice can be ascertainedby means
of a trial flash.See trial flash.
Pleasenote that at f 11there is a certainprobabilitythat the bounce ligth providedby
the direct/indirectsetting will not reach the subject.
Failureof aperturesignal@denotesthat the situationis not suited to indirectlighting.
Indirect flash exposures without computer
Recommendedonly for fully swivelledreflector,i.e.indirectlight only.
For this purpose, find aperture for direct lighting(see also flash exposureswithout
computer),but open up by 2 stops for the camera,e.g f 4 insteadof f B.
In this case the exposurerange is the path covered by the reflectedlight, and not the
direct distancebetween subject and flash unit.

aperture calculator and then transfer to camera.

lf so requiredfor a particulardepth of field, you can now select largeaperturesin con-

camera will not accept apertures above f 16.

Assumingthat conditionsare identicaland a 27 DIN/4OOASA

and necessitate aperture f 22.

than one second.Consequently, this flash unit is highlysuited to motor cameras. I SERVO flash
For exposures requiringmore than one flash unit, it is possibleto trigger the BCS 44
STUDlOcordlesslyfrom another gun.
For this purpose,move switch @ to position1.
The photocell@ now respondsto the light from the other electronicflash unit (flash
bulbs have no effect) and fires the BCS 44 STUDIOalmost instantaneously.
lmportant
The responseof the second flash unit depends on the angle at which it receiveslight
from the first unit.lt is alwaysadvisableto carryout a trialf lashf irst.lf the unit is linked
straightto the camera, make sure that the switch is always on zero.
Wide-angle diffuser
Even illuminationis 60ohorizontaland45overtical,providingfull illuminationfor minia-
ture camerashots (24x36) with a 35 mm wide-anglelens.Turningthe adjustingknob@
in the directionof the arrow insertsthe diffuser@ and expands even illuminationto 78ox60o.The availablefocal length is then reducedto 24 mm. I
Using the diffuser in the computer mode reduces the limit range of the flash unit by
about 30o/oas compared to the originalvalue.
Example:Guide number 44,21D|Nand aperturef 2.8 providea range of 15 m without
diffuser,and about 11m with diffuser.
For f lash exposureswith the wide-anglediffuser,but without thecomputer, it is neces-
saryto adjustthe cameraapertureto the next f-numberbelow the readingon the aper-
ture calculator.
Example:Guide number44and 21 DIN provideaperturef 5.6 at 8 m;therefore the
camera requiresthe next lower aperture f 4.
lf the power selector@ is set at lock position(marker)to the left of the respectiveguide
number the meter/feetscale shows the requiredaperturesfor wide angle shots.

l'appareil-photo.
a entrainementpar moteur.

STUDIO
Ci6 che dovete sapere riguardo at Vs. lampeggiatore BCS 44 STUDIO
vienedisinserito.Sintantoch6il soggetto resta all'internodel campo d'azionedel dia-
framma del computer,risultaautomaticamenteilluminatonella manieraadatta,indi-
pendentementedalla distanza.L'aperturadel diaframma dell'apparecchiofotografi-
Alcontrario,in caso difunzionamentomanualedel lampeggiatore,6semprenecessa-
distanzadella ripresa.

zione,provvederaa spegnereil f lash.La rimanenteenergiainutilizzataviene immagaz-
zinataed 6 disponibileper i lampi successivi.Di conseguenzai tempi di carica sono
