O SHUTTER RELEASE BUTTON

After the film has been advanced and the shutter releasehas
been partially depressed, the battery circu it is tu rned on. lf
the batteries in the camera are in good condition, the orange
circle in the upper center of the viewfinder will light up. The ,
circle light will go out under normal lighting conditions, when
the shutter release is fully depressedand the exposure made.
The shutter releasecan be locked with a 30" clockwise turn of
the shutter lock (page 5, part 5). lt is a good idea to lock
the shutter if you do not releaseit after advancing the film.
Eveit when the shutter is wou nd, the battery circu it is auto-
maticafly disconnected. lt is connected only when the shutter a
 is released.
O EXPOSURE COUNTER

The counter is located on top of the camera (page 5, part 4)
and indicatesthe number of film f ramesexposed. lt automati-
cally resetsto "S" (for Start) when the camera back is opened.
The 20th and 36th frames are in red to signal the end of the
film roll (dependingon the length of f ilm used).

O FILM SPEED (ASA OR DIN} SETTING

After the film has been loaded,be sureto set the ASA or DIN
film speedindex specifiedfor the film in useon the film speed
scale. This adjusts the exposure control mechanismfor the
film being usedand is an essentialstep in getting properly
exposed pictures.
To set the film speed, turn the Film SpeedRing (pageb, part
15) with your f inger on the notchesof the Film SpeedRing
and align the white line at the outer top edge of the lens
mount with the ASA speedof the film beingused.Click stops
are provided to make settings easy. Do not set the .te

O HOW TO COMPOSE THE PIETURE

When you look through the viewfinder, you will notice a
bright yellow frame composed of four L-shaped lines, one ati
each corner. The frame is a fairly close approximation of the
actual area of the subject that will appear in your pictureI
under ordinary circumstances. Therefore, compose the subject
with in th is f rame.

O PARALLAX CORRECTION MARKS

When you look through the viewfinder, you will see three
yellow dots, two in the upper part of the frame on both sides
and one on the left-hand side of the lower part. They are
parallax correction marks. When you take portra its or close-
ups (subject within 10 feet of the camera), use the dots as the
border of the picture. See the illustration.
Th is correction is requ ired because the lens of the Petri ES
Auto, as those of most cameras, is located in a different po-
sition than the viewfinder. Therefore, the'viewfinder cannot
show the identical scene that the lens is taking. This ir :led
                               ParaI lax.
With most scenes, particularly those in which the subject is
more than 10 feet (3 meters) away, the parallax is of little
importance. lt is a considerationwhen you are taking portraits,
for instance, and you must compensate to avoid cutting
                                               off your subject's head.

O FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY
The Petri ES Auto with its electronic shutter and automatic
exposure control system assures you of properly exposed
pictures, even with extremely poor light. However, when you
snap a MOVING object in poor light, it is necessaryto use
flash equipment becausea subject in dim light requiresa slow
exposurewithout flash and a mwing subject would be blurred.
Once the flash unit is connected, the shutter speed is then
automatically set at 1l2O sec.for f lash synchronization.
The Petri ES Auto is equipped with both a "hot shoe" contact
for cordless units and a standard PC socket for units with cord.
lf y j use a cordlessunit slip it into the accessoryshoe on top
of the camera and it will automatically make contact with the
shutter mechanism. lf your unit has a cord simply plug the
cord into the flash socket (page 5, part 17l-.
When Using NON-AUTOMATIC Flash Units:
1. Push A/F Switch to the right to set at wl"A" position

O HOW TO USE THE SELF-TIMER

Sw, 3 the self-timer lever in the direction indicated by the
arrow in the illustration. Releasethe shutter button, and the
frame will be exposed after a delay of approximately I
seconds. The self-timer can be set either before or after
advancing the film. The self-timer is generally used when the
photographer wants to join a group that he is photographing.
The use of a tripod or similar support is recommended when
the self-timer is used and is essentialfor pictures taken at slow
speeds.
Do not use the self-timer in poor light (less than EV 2.51.
