Automatic flash light control
Set the automatic/manual selector to automatic (adjacent to
the red dot). Using the power ratio/automatic mode selector
(12) select the appropriate mode of automatic control.
red mode - flash distances between 1 .5 m and 12 m
(5 ft and 39 ft)
green mode - flash distances between 1 m and 6 m
(3.3 ft and 20 ft)
yellow mode - flash distances between 1 m and 3 m
(3.3 ft and 10 ft)
It is possible at some flash distances to choose between
yellow and green or indeed between yellow, green and red
modes of operation. In such cases choose yellow if possible
otherwise green as this gives the largest possible depth of
field.
Align the letter'S' with the speed of the film in the camera
(ASA or DIN) by rotating the outer ring of the exposure guide
(9). Rotate the inner ring of the exposure guide (9) so that the
full white circle appears in the window of the inner ring. The
red, green and yellow radial lines (next to the 39, 20 and 10 ft
markings on the exposure guide) respectively indicate the
aperture (f-stop) figure that must be set on the camera in the
red, green and yellow modes of automatic control.
For example: with a film
speed of '100 ASA, the
aperture (f-stop) of the camera
must be set to 2.Binthe red
mode,5.6 in the green mode
and '11 in the yellow mode.
The red, green and yellow
circumferential lines on the
exposure quide indicate the
flash-to-subject range forthe red, green and yellow modes of
operation. These are 1 .5 m to 12 m (5 ft to 39 ft), 1 m to 6 m
(3.3 ft to 20 ft) and 'l m to 3 m (3.3 ft to 1 0 ft) respectively.
Under automatic control the computer within your flash unit
automatically controls the light output and sets the correct
exposures within the automatic range. Provided that shots areView original page 7Page 8 · Read text
taken within this range, there is no need to changewww.butkus.usthe aperture setting on your camera. lf you are not certain if the subject is within the automatic flash range, charge the flash unit by setting the on/off switch (13)to the on position, aim the flash at the subject and press the test button (10) after the ready lamp (10) lights. The computer control lamp (5) lights if the subject is within automatic flash range. lf not, try a mode with a longer automatic range. lf the subject is still outside the automatic range either switch to manual control or shorten the flash-to-subject distance. NOTE: lf you have a flash-matic camera (one with a built-in flash control) you can not use automatic control of the f lash unit but have to follow the instructions for manual control. Manual flash light control Set the automatic/manual selector to manual (adjacent to the open circle). Using the power ratio/automatic mode selector (12) select the appropriate power ratio: O - full power (guide number is 32 at 100 ASA) O - half power (guide number is 16 at 100 ASA) O - quarter power (guide number is 8 at 100 ASA) The choice of power ratios not only saves energy but also extends the use of the flash unit. For instance, macro flash photography requires a low guide number so only quarter power is needed. Also, when a number of flashes are required in a short time, the lower power ratios should be used as the time intervalto recharge is considerably reduced. Having chosen the appropriate power ratio, rotate the inner ring of the exposure guide (9) so that the same power ratio symbolappears in the window of the inner ring. Align the letter 'S' with the speed of the film in the camera (ASA or DIN) by rotating the outer ring of the exposure guide (9). Estimate the distance from the flash unit to ihe subject. Read off the aperture (f-stop) figure on the inner ring directly under this distance.View original page 8

For example: with a film
speed of 400 ASA, half
power ratio and a flash-to-
sublect distance of 16 m, the
aperture (f-stop) figure is 2.
NOTE: A handy formula is
gurde number _,: f -SIOP-T---;-
orstance
Set the appropriate aperture (f-stop) on the camera.
Using the filter kit
The light f rom your flash unit can be widened or coloured using
the filters provided:
wrde angle diffuser (28 mm) - widens the flash light beam for
use with a wide angle lens
red, yellow and green filters - colours the flash light beam for
special effects
The diffuser or filter simply clips onto the flash head (1).
The range over which automatic flash can be used and the
.correct aperture (f-stop) figure for your camera can be
calculated as given in "Automatic flash light Control" and
"Manual flash light control" with two exceptions. When using
the wide angle diff user, the speed of the f ilm in the camera has
to be aligned with the letter 'W' and the range is shortened by
the amount shown by the white dot in the coloured
circumferential lines.
For example: when using a wide angle diffuser with a film
speed of 400 ASA in the green mode of automatic control, the
required aperture (f-stop) figure is 8 and the automatic flash
range is 1 m to 4 m (3.3 ft to 13 ft).
Shooting
Set the on/otf switch (1 3) to the on position (adlacent to the red
area) and focus your camera. Take the flash picture after the
ready lamp ('10) lights.View original page 9Page 10 · Read text
Bounce flash www.butkus.us
Use bounce flash when you want to make a softer effect and to
eliminate shadows. When
taking flash pictures indoors,
bounce the light off white
walls, ceilings or other
reflective surfaces. The flash
head ('1) can be tilted to
various angles as shown on
the angle of tilt indicator (3).
The automatic mode of control
is recommended for bounce
flash. Take care that the total distance of flash-to-subject via
the reflective surface is within the automatic flash range. This
can be easily checked by means of the computer control
lamp (5).
To obtain the correct exposure in the manual mode open your
camera lens by one additional f-stop (e.9. 5.6.to 4) for 45"
bounce flash and two additional f.stops (e g 8 to 4) for 60" to
90" bounce flash.
Hints and precautions
Flash photography is not only used under low light conditions
but can also help eliminate disturbing shadow effects under
normal light conditions. Read books on the subject and above
all, experiment with your camera and flash unit to discover the
many possibilities.
When taking pictures with flash, do not shoot directly at highly
reflective surfaces like mirrors or windows.
When you have completed a session of f lash photography, set
the on/off swith (13) to the off position. Remove the batteries
when the flash unit is not to be used for some time.
Do not try to open or reparr your flash unit as this not only voids
the guarantee but could be danger.ous due to the high voltage
present. lf your flash unit needs repairing or does not work
correctly, take it back to the place of purchase.View original page 10Page 11 · Read text

hetmotief bereikt. Bii indirect
flitsen wordt het flitslicht
gencht op een wand of
plafond (dat wit moet zijn bij
kleurenfotografie om on-
gewenste kleurafwijkingen
te vermijden) en daardoor
gereflecteerd naar het
motief.
betreffende computer stand maxi maaitoegestane afstand.
Dit kan gemakkelijk worden gecontroleerdmet het computer
controlelampje (5)
i p.v f 5.6) en twee stoppen (dus bijv. f 4 i.p.v. t b; Oil een
afstand van de flitsreflector tussen 60" en 90".
Algemene opmerkingen
