PART I

SECTION 1. SYNCHRONIZATION
An electronicspeedlightflasheswithin a few millionthsof a
secondafterit is triggered.The camerashuttershouldbe equipped
with contactsof the zero delay type for use with speedlight.
    Synchronizationis extremelyimportantand the greatestcare
should be taken in making all connectionsto the synchronizer
cables. lf these connections are not made in a careful and
workmanlikemanner,eitheran intermittentconnectionor an elec-
trical leak betweenthe two leads may result. Either will cause
unreliable performance. An electrical leak will be especially
noticeableduring humid weather.
After the synchronizercable is properlyconnected,it is well
to checkthe synchronizationwith the camera.Adjustthe lighting
unit to the same heightas the cameralensand face the lightinto
the lens. The lens apertureshould be throughthe back of the
camerato operatethe shutter. The flash of the light shouldthen
appearas a circlethe same size as the aperture.A few sheetsof
white paper in front of the lens will cut down the brillianceof the
flash and aid in makingthe observation.lt is best to performthis
test with the modelinglamp turnedoff. lf the circle is flattenedon
the sides,or if no light appearsthroughthe lens, the shutteris not
synchronizedwith the light.Shuttercontactsfor this light should
be X- or zero-delaytype. lf the light appears not to be synchron-
ized,the shuttercontactsshouldbe checkedby a reputablecamera
repairman.

1. Resetbreaker.
2. Try a new flashtube.
3. Try anotherline cord.

E. Common Symptoms and Their Causes
1. LIGHTFLASHESBY ITSELFWITHOUTAPPARENTREASON.
  Probablecause:
       (1) Defectivetrip cord,or trip cord incorrectlypolarized.
       (2) Brightlightfallingon photoslave.
       (3) Defectivepowercapacitor.
       (4) Poorconnectionin line cord
       (5) Reversepolarityon trip cord connectionat camera.

2. TRIPCORDWILLNOT FLASH,BUT CHARGEINDICATOR

       (2) Defectivetrip cord.
       (3) Defectivelightingunit.
       (4) Defectivetriggercapacitor.

3. ONE LIGHTWILL NOT FLASH.
   Probable cause.'
        (1) Try the non-flashinglightingunitin the otheroutlets.
lf it does not flash, suspect a defectiveflashtubeor
           triggercoil. See section3.
       (2) Try the goodlightingunit in the non-ftashingouilet.rf
                 it doesnotflash,suspecta defectivetriggercapacitor.

4. CHARGEINDICATORLIGHTDOESNOTGO OUT.
   Probablecause:
       (1) Defectivepowercapacltor.
       (2) Defectivelightingunit.
       (3) Defectiveflashtube"afterglow."
      "Afterglow"is a conditionin whicha flashtubecontinues
   to glowdimlyafterthe mainflashis over.whilethisglowpersists,
   thechargeindicatorlightwillnotgo out.Persistentor continuous
   afterglowindicatesa defectiveflashtube.A slight afterglow,
lastinga secondor less, may occasionallyoccurin a normal
     f lashtube.

5. CHARGEINDICATORFAILSTO LIGHT.
   Probablecause:
       (1) Defectivechargeindicatorlamp.
       (2) Defectivepowertransformer.
     , (3) Defectivedischargerelay.
       (4) CapacitorC5 short-circuited.
       (5) Defectiverectifier.

6. MISFIREALARMBUZZERSOUNDSAFTERFLASH.
  Probablecause:
       (1) RelayK2 detective.
       (2) Defectivepowercapacitor.

7. MISFIREALARMSOUNDSAFTERFLASH.

8. MISFIRE ALARM BUZZER SOUNDS EVERY FLASH, ALL
  LIGHTSFLASHING.
   Probable cause:
        (1) Alarm switch left on when a light is unplugged.See
         page 9.
        (2) Defectivemisfirealarm switch.

9. MISFIREALARM BIJZZERDOES NOT SOUND EVENWHEN
  A LIGHTIS MISFIRING.
     Probable cause:
        (1) Wrong power plug is being used.
        (2) Misfirealarm switch turned off, or switch defective.
        (3) Defective relay K2.
        (4) Defectivealarm
        (5) Defectiveresistor R4, R5, R6, R7 and R9 or diode,D1B,

The maincapacitorbankconsistsof Cl, C2, Cg,andC4. These
four capacitorsare chargedseparatelythroughthe isolationrec-
tifier. Each of these capacitorsis separatelyconnectedto one of
the outputplugs,J1, J2, J3, and J4. By insertinga properlywired
power plug in socketJ8, the capacitorscan be connectedin any
combinationdesired.A wide choiceof outputpoweris thus available
to the photographermerelyby changingthe power plug.

    RelayK1, operatedby the 11S-voltpowerline,is providedto
dischargethe powercapacitorbankwhenthe unit is turnedoff.
When K1 de-energizes,the capacitorbank dischargesthrough
resistorR8, bypassingthe isolationrectifiers.

   A misflrealarmsystemis providedto alertthe operatorwhen

powercapacitorassociatedwithit will notdischarge.Thedifference

    All lightingunitsare providedwith modelinglampswhich
operatefrom a low voltagewindingon transformerT1A.

   The triggercircuit,usinga triggerSCR,is connectedacross
the powercapacitorbank.
