4.0 SETTINGUP THE Qflash
COMPLETELY DISCONNECT THE POWER PACK BEFORE CHANGING THE
FLASH-TUBEOR MODELINGLAMP.
4.1 CONNECTINGTHE FLASH.TUBEFOR T2 Red Dot
Match the red dot on the flash{ube base (locatedbetween
pins 1 and 4) with the red dot on the socket.Push Flash-tube
in untilit is properlyseatedinsidethe flash socket.
NOTE: Replace the flashtube only with Quantum type.
QF30 or QF30uv. Other types will not provide proper expo-
sure,or may not work at all.

4.2 CONNECTINGTHEFLASH.TUBEAND MODELINGLAMPFORX2
Connecting the modeling lamp.
Note:the modelinglamp must be insertedbeforethe flash-tube.
1. Removelamp from box and plasticbag.
2. Do not touchthe bulbsurfacewith bare hands.Bulbcan be handledwith tissuepaper.
3. lf bulb surfaceshowssignsof fingerprintsor dirt, clean carefullywith alcohol.
4. Handlewith care duringuse as impactwill severelyshortenlamp life.
5. Insert the bulb into modelinglamp socket.The modelinglamp is not affectedby
polarityso orientationis not important.
Connecting the flash-tube.
1. Match the red marker on the flash-tubebase with the correspondingred marker on
the flash-tubesocket.The tube can also be alignedby matchingpins 1, 2, 3, and 4
with those numberedon the socket.
2. Insertthe flash-tubeuntilit is fully seatedinsidethe flash socket.
NOTE: Replacethe flash-tubeonly with a Quantumtype QF32 or QF32uv. Other types
will not provideproperexposureor may not work at all.

4.3 SHOOTINGBARE BULB IN AUTO OR TTL MODE
When shooting"bare bulb" in Auto or TTL Mode, you must NOT illuminatethe Qflash

4.7 BRACKET MOUNTING
The Qflash can be mounted to a camera
bracketusing the knob provided.(lf the knob
interfereswith your bracket,or you find that the
threadsare not long enoughfor your bracket,
a longer114-20screw is also provided.)
Place the enclosed rubber mountingpad on
the bracketas shown in the diagram.This will
providea stable mountingarea for the Qflash.
NOTE: Bracket designs vary between styles
and the bracketmaterialcan vary in thickness.
Always make sure that the mounting knob
screws into the Qflash at least 2 comolete
turns.
4.8 POWERINGTHE QFIash T2
Plug the QflashTurbo Cable into the outputjack
of a Turbo Battery(purchasedseparately).
Always turn the Turbo Battery OFF before con-
nectingor disconnectingthe Qflash.
1. "Check Turbo":
lf the Turbo is not supplyingpower to the Qflash,
the message"CheckTurbo"will appearin the dis-
play, along with three warning beeps from the
Qflash.lf the Turbois freshlycharged,turn off the
Turbo,wait one second,then turn the Turbo on again. Otherwiseit may be time to
rechargethe Turbo.
2, "Reset":
lf the Qflashhas to reset itself,the message"Reset"will appear in the display.To resume
operation,press any button(exceptthe fire button)and the Qflashwill resumeoperation.
In the event that the Qflash starts behavingstrangely,(i.e. it does not respondto the
push buttons,the displayblinks,or the displayis incorrect)you can force a reset.Turn
the Turbo (except off. Press and hold any button the fire button). Turn the Turbo on again. ;
NOTE: When any reset has power occurred, the filmspeed and setting that you have F-
enteredwill be lost and must be enteredaoain.. tr

Connectthe Qflash X2 power cable to an Adapter
power cable for your power pack. No adapter is
neededfor QPAX-X.
1. Check Power
lf the power pack is not supplying power to Qflash, the message "Check Powe/' will
appearin the displayand threewarningbeepswill sound. lt may be necessaryto switch
to the "fast" recycle mode if your power pack has one. This can also mean it may be
time to rechargethe batteries.

OTHERWISEYOU WILL DAMAGE THE QFLASH AND VOID THE WARRANTY.
4.10 SYNC CONNECTION
There are three ways to connect the Qflash to the camera sync.
1. Connecta standardhouseholdtwo-prongsync cord (not suppliedwith model
QFT2USand QFX2US)to the sync connectoron the Qflash.
2. fTLAdapter; the sync is providedby the adapter. c
3. QF53 Hot Shoe Sync Adapter provides sync from hot shoe. lt can be used as an 1
alternativeto the PC svnc. 2

5.0 BASIC QFIAShOPERATION
The followingsectionexplainsthe basic operationof the Qflash,when used as a sin-
gle unit. Availablemodes are Manual,Automatic,TTL, Program,or Strobo.To change
from one mode to another:
1. PressMode button.Mode will blink.
2. Use Up (A) or Down (\,/) buttonsto change the mode.

Changing Manual Power Setting
1. Push Set buttononce. Manualpower settingon displaywill blink.

Changing F/number
1. Push Set buttontwice.The "F' in the f/numberdisplaywill blink.
2. Use Up/Down buttons until desired f/number appears in the display.The f/number
can be adjustedin 1/3 stop increments.Changingthe filmspeedchanges the avail-
able f/numbers.
The flash distancealso changesdependingon the reflectorpositionof "N" (Normal),
"W" (Wide) or "D" (Diffused)next to the Flash Distance.See Section 5.6, Option
Button.
The Qffash will never let you choose an impossiblesetting (e.g. iso 12 tl32). The
Qflashis selfadjusting.Availablef/numbers(iso200) are:2.0,2.0+,2.8-,2.8,2.8+,
4.0 -,4.0,4.0 +, 5.6 -, 5.6,5.6 +, 8.0 -, 8.0,8.0 +, 11 -, 11, 1'1+, 16 -, 16, 16 +,
22-,22,22 +,32 -,32 (+, - represent+ 1/3 or - 1/3 stop increments).
Changing Filmspeed
1. Push the set button three times. The flash distance will be replaced by filmspeed.
The filmspeeddisplaywill blink.
2. Use Up/Downbuttonsuntildesiredfilmspeedappearsin the display.Note that flash
distancechangesas filmspeedchanges.The f/numbermay also change to keep you
in the allowablerange of the Qflash.

Your Qflash has been factory cali-
brated, however it is possibleto

5.3 TTL MODE
rt TTL mode is used with all of the Quantum TTL adapters.These optionaladaptersallow
the Qflashto be used with many popularcameras in TTL mode. The TTL instruction
booklethas additionaldetails.

settingand the numberof flasheswillchangeto displaythe maximumallowablesettings.

1. Push the Set buttontwice.The # in front of the countwill blink.
2. Use the Up/Downbuttonsuntilthe desirednumberof flashesappearsin the display.
Changing Strobo Power Setting
1. Pushthe Set buttonthreetimes.The dash in front of the powersettingwill blink.
2. Use the Up/Downbuttonsuntilthe desiredpower settingappearsin the display.
NOTE:When using the Qflash in stroboscopic mode, the Turbo must be set to
"Ultra-fast".
5.5 PROGRAMMODE
The ProgramModecan saveup to 4 Qflashset-upsof Manual,Auto,or TTL operation.Then
youcan quicklyswitchbetweenyourfavoriteor frequentlyusedset-upswith one button.

Pushthe the lightbuttononce to turn on the modelinglightfor 16 seconds,or push the
light button twice for a 32 second duration. Push the light button a third time and the
modelinglightwill turn off.
7.O REMOTESENSOROPERATION
QuantumInstrumentsmakesa RemoteSensorModule,QF21 (optional)for the Qflash.
This module controlsthe light output of the Qflash from a remote location.This can be
usefulforexample,when aimingthe Qflashinto an umbrella.Once the RemoteSensor
Module is connectedto the Qflash the Auto mode disappearsand is replacedby SENS
mode.All other modes remain unaffected.
The Remote Sensor can be mountedto the camera's hot-shoeor to a bracket (bracket
mountingrequiresa sync cord, sold separately).
The RemoteSensorcomeswith a 3 ft. (1 m)cord, and can be extendedusinga 20ft. (6m)
long QF-51 controlextensioncable.The remotecan be extendedup to 100 ft. (30 m).

8.0 MULTIPLEQflash OPERATION
The followingsection explains using two or more Qflashes connectedtogether with a
cable, to create many types of lightingset-ups. In a multi-flashset-up the operationol
Qflashesset to Manual or Strobo modes remains unchangedfrom the basic operation
(Section5.0).TTL operationremainsunchangedas long as no Qflashis in Auto mode.
Severalfeatures become availablewhen one or more Qflashesare in Auto mode.
Some examples are shown in this section. (For best performanceconnect a separate
Power Pack to each Qflash T2.
8.1 TWO Qflash lN TTL MODE
This can increasepower and/or create multiplelight sourceswith TTL control.

This allowsyou to control main/fillratiosby settingdifferentlight outputsfor each Qflash

8.3 ONE Qflash IN AUTO, ONE IN SLAVEMODE
Withone Qflashin Auto Mode,the TTL mode of the otherunit is changedto Slavemode.
The "Slave"unit'slight outputwill be controlledby the Auto unit. Use this set-upwhen
you want more light than availablewith one Qflash,or when you want light from two
directions,controlled@@by the Qflashnear the camera,for example.

Power can be increasedup to 150 WS for each t2, 200-400 WS for each X2 used.
When two Qflashes are set to Auto Mode, only one Qflash will control any additional
Qflashesset to SlaveMode.The Qflashwhich has controlover the Slaveunit(s)will dis-
playthe normal"Auto"mode;any otherQflashwill display"auto"with a lowercase "a".
