FOCUSING
Duo-Lever Focusing is the most modern system since the subiect

ments-the couse of blurred pictures-ore minimized.

HOTDING THE CAMERA
When the comero is held ot chest or woist level, the best
perspective is obtoined since the lines of ihe subiect ore undistorted
in the picture formot.
The fingers should be on the Duo-Lever controls os illustroted
obove. By keeping bofh honds on the comero in this monner, the
subiect is quickly brought into shorp focus by moving the levers
the left lever is moved downword if the point of shorpfocus is further thon the subiect ond, conversely, the right lever is *
moved downword if the point of shorpness ii closer to the comero.
The oreo visible on the extro-br:ig[rt viewing screen is exoctly
whot will oppeor on the negotive. lt thus becomes very eosy to
select the desired subiect motter, bockground; etc., by moving the
comero to the right or left, ond up or down.

By using these moin principles of good composition: simplicity,
bolonce, leoding line, bockground, depth ond comero ongle, your
pictures will be more ottrocfive to everyone ond of prize-winning
coliber.
Simpliciry. Every picfure should hove o moin point of interest
whether it be o single obiect or o group. lt should present one ideo
with clority ond not hove distrocting obiects or lines which would f,
prevent lhe viewer from recognizing the photogroph's. purpose. t
Bolcnce. Photo pictures of more thon one obiect (for exomple: 3
persons) ore considered to be well-bolonced when they ore in hor-
mony with one onother. This con be done by orronging obiects
I of similor shope ond size in vorious positions. lf you ploce your
moin interest holfwoy belween the center ond the edge of the
viewftnder, yoU will find your composition immediotely hos o pleos-
ing effect; it is generolly ogreed omong professionols thot the
principol obiecl of ottroction should not be in the exoct center.
This fechnique is very useful when toking o group picture-hove some
of the people pose in vorious positions, rother thon lined up obreosf.
Leadlng llne. Any line-stroight or curved-thot brings the eye
to the moin obiect is, on excellent feotdre in o piciure. This tech-
nique is especiolly useful in outdoor photogrophy where o roodwoy, -

SELECTING SHUTTER SPEED AND APERTURE I -t
is I , W" know you will find picture-toking is fun; if photogrophy
o new oddition to your hobbies, we believe fhot, offer reoding this I
secfion, you will see it is olso eosy.
' The combinotion of the lens opening ond shutter speed controls
I lhe omount of light entering the comero. The diophrogm setting
determines how much of the lens' oreo will be used ond the shutler
speed will govern the durotion of the opening. However, before selecfing these seltings, we believe you should undersfond whot they f
ore ond how lhey work. I
APERTURE OPENING
When we select on operture openingr we regulole the size of
the circulor hole in the diophrogm. This opening will control the
intensity of the light odmiffed into the comero.
The size of fhis opening is designofed by o number ond is
referred to by mony interchongeoble nomes: " lens stop, f-stop,
f-number, operture, ond diophrogm setfing (or stop)."
The "f" numbers ore exoctly fhe reverse of the openings. The
smsllest number (f/3.5) on the diophrogm scole is the moximum
. opening, while conversely, the torgest number (tll6l is the smollest
opening.
The operture scole hos these stop morkings:
3.5 4 5.6 8 rr t6
Beginning with the smollest opening, f lL6, eoch succeeding
setting doubles the quonfify of effective light possed through the
lens. Thus, ot t15.6 we put 8 times more light onto the negofive
thon we do ot tl16l
A " holf-stop " f-number con be obfoined by setting the scole
belween two numbers. For exomple : if we desire on f f 6.3 opening,
move the operture control lever so that the blonk oreo between the
f/5.6 ond 8 morkings is in the peep window.
Since lhe omouni of light required to reproduce o given subiect
is fixed, the shuiter speed must be considered before selecting this
opening; this is exploined on the nex.i poge.
