EXPOSURECOUNTER

As you shoot, the exposure counter will outomoticolly record

the number of pictures token. After insertingfilm, turn the expo-

sure counter set screw until the counter window registers zero.
IENS APERTUR,EAND SHUTTERSPEEDSETTINGS

By using the built-in light meter the correct lens operture ond shutter speed settings
con be reodily determined under voryingt light conditions. However, you should under-

stond the f unction o{ the two in determiningthe film exposure in order to f ocilitote

selectionof the oppropriote combinotion.
EXPOSURE

The omount of light required to reproduce on imoge on film is fixed. Too little light

will result in dull under-exposedpicturesond too much in bleochedover-exposedpictures.

The lens operture controls the omount of light thot will poss through the lens to the
film. The shutter speed controls the length of time thot light will be ollowed to pots
to the film. From this you con see thot the shutter speed ond lens operture ore
interdependentin controlling the omount of light odmitted, ond therefore, the film
exposure.
IENS APERTURE
Thesizeof the lensoperturemoy be voriedby odiustingthe lensoperturering to
one of the colibroted settings (f stops). Most light is odmitted ot I/2.8 ond the leost
ot t/22. Eoch groduoted f stop between these two numbers decreosesthe omount of
odmitted light by opproximotely 50 percent of the preceeding f stop. To put this

solid support, such os o tripod, will be necessoryto prevent movement of the comero.
TIGHT METER
Eoch film monufocturer lists the speed ot which his film is roted on the instructions

COUPTEDFILM ADVANCE AND SHUTTERCOCKING
A single stroke of the film tronsport lever will outomoticolly cock the shutter os the
film is odvonced one frome. Once the shutter hos been releosed it connot be cocked
until the film is ogoin odvonced.
By coupling these two functions in o single operotion the LE-tr positively prevents
double exposuresond permits you to shoot pictures in ropid succession.
HOTDING THE CAMERA
Grip the LE-II firmly in both honds ond hold it in the position most comforroble for
you. Core should be token thot your fingertips do not obstruct the lens or rongefinder
window while shooting. We suggest thot you press your elbows close to the body
for extro stobifity.

FOCUSING
As you sight your subject through the combined view ond rongefinder window you
will see o bright frome surrounding the picture oreo. The uppermost line expresses
the picture oreo ot infinity ond the line beneoth it the picture oreo for close-ups.
Sight your subiect through the finder eyepiece ond bring it within the diomond locoted
in the center of the bright frome, rototing the focusing lever until the double imoges
ore superimposed.
Selecting on obiect with stroight verticol lines will moke focusing eosier. Also, if
you intend on using the comero in o verticol position you moy find it more con-
venient to focus in the horizontol position ond then shift for the picture.
After focusing you con oscertoin the distonce in feet (F) or meters (M) from your
lens to the subiect by reoding the number on the distonce scole opposite the red triongle.

FIXED FOCUS
Fixed focus eliminotes the risk of getting the sublect out of focus ond mokes the
comero eosier to use. lt is of porticulor odvontoge when photogrophing ropidly
moving subiects.
Fixed focus in the Somoco LE-tr is obtoined by setting the lens operture ot f / A ond
the distonce scole to the red dot on the focusing ring. The oppropriote shutter speed
will depend on light conditions.
Obiects f rom I f eet to infinity will be in reosonobly shorp focus.
Obiects less thon I feet f rom the comero will not be in shorp f ocus.

DEPTHOF FIELD

When you focus on on obiect there is o zone extending in front of ond to the reor

of your focus point thot will be brought into reosonobly shorp fccus. This zone of

groduolly declining shorpnessis colled the Depth of Field or Depth of Focus. The

extent of the Depth of Field is dependent on o) the lens operture used ond bl the

distonceof the subiect from the lens.

Page 17 · Read text
At o given distonce o smoll lens operture (high I / number) increoses the Depth of
Field ond conversely,o lorge lens operture (low f / number) decreoses the Depth of
Fiefd. Moreover, os the distonce of the subiect from the lens is increosed there
will be o proportionol increose in the Depth of Field, both to the front ond reor.
The Depth of Field scole is provided to furnish you with the opproximote Depth of
Field for vorying combinotions of lens operture ond subiect distonce.
As you look down on the scole with the comero pointed owoy f rom yoU, you will
see o double set of numbers, exoctly olike, extending to the right ond left of the
red triongle. These numbers correspond to the f stop numbers on the operture scole.
The numbers to the right ore used to determine the Depth of Field in front of your
subiect ond the numbers to the left the Depth of Field to the reor of your subiect.
Sight the some number on the Depth of Field scole, both to the right ond left, os
you hove set on the operture scole. The Depth of Field will be indiclted opposite
these numbers on the distonce scole both in feet ond meters.

FTASH PHOTOGRAPHY

The Somoco LE-tr is equipped with flosh synchronizotion for both
flosh bulb units ond electronic flosh equipment.
When using o flosh unit, set the synchro selection lever ot I ond
fix the end o f the flosh cord to the flosh termino I on the comero.
For excellent synchronizotionond moximum bulb efiiciency we suggest
thot you use Closs F bulbs with shutter speeds up to 1/50. Closs
FP onC M bulbs con olso be used but the shutter speed then should
be slower thon 1/25.
To determine the correct lens operture for your picture, divide the
Guide Number of the bulb by the distonce in feet from the comero
to your subiect. For exomple, with o Guide Number of 80 ond o dis-
tonce of l0 feet the correct lens operture will be I/g.
When using electronic flosh, set the synchro selection lever of , .
With on electronic flosh unit the shutter speed con be set up to 1/300.
For detoils on the use of electronic flosh equipment refer to the
directions supplied by the monufocturer of the electronic ottochment.
