. Use the Reflected-light-Type Meter Properly
The sekonic L-98 is on exposure meter of the reflected-
light type. The reflected type of exposure meter meosures
the light reflected f rom o subiect ond indicotes the
correct exposure. Do not use this meter in meosuring
the light incident on o subiect. L-98 is ihe best of oll
the exposure meters now ovoiloble on the morket os it
hos been developed by the engineers of Sekonic Co.,

o Equip q Bqltery fo the Meter

When using the meter for the flrsi time, put o mercury
bottery in the Mercury Bottery Chomber. Set the bottery
into position so thot thot side of the bottery beoring the
mork "M-D" comes in contoct with the Botiery Chqmber
Lid. When the boftery is ploced in the chomber, moke
sure thot the lid is screwed tight. Depress the Botiery.
Check Knob and see if the Pointer stops in line with
the Bottery Check Point. lf the Pointer does not swing
ond stop ot tlre check point, the Meter is not working
properly ond if this is the cose, you must chonge the
bottery with o new one. The Mercury Boltery of l.3V
     is used with the meTer.

Use the Reflected Light-Type Meter Properly !
After the boltery hos been ploced in the chomber, the
bottery checked ond the Pointer brought in line with
lhe Zero Point, L-98 is reody to meosure ihe light ond
indicoie the correct exposure with very seldom necessity
for reodiustment ofterwords. The only remoining question
lies in how you use fhe reflected light-iype exposure
   meter os instructed.
   Set the Proper Film Speed
Checti the instructions shpet of your film ond you will
find the sensitivity figure of the film you ore using. lf
the figure is, soy, ASA 100, hold the Highilow Switch
Lever tight ond turn the ASA Swirch Knob so thot the
ASA reoding "100" oppeors in the smoll slit underneoth

    Set the ASA' film speed
Turn the ASA f ilm speed switch knob so thot the ASA"

When this method is used, ploce the Meter obout 10

ment. In portroiture, the most importont port of the
subiect is the foce. Ploce the meter os close to the

or the reflector must not be shodowed by the meter.

         l. Boloncing for Tone Ronge
The following method is recommended when pictures ore
to be token in the condition thot there is o shorp
controst in the tone ronge of the subiect.
* Ploce the Meter obout l0 centimeters (obout 3 inchesl
a from the subiect to meosure the light reflected from the
highlight ond shodow of the subiect. Choose the inter-
mediote volue from both scole reodings. When portroits
ore to be token in this method, it is odvisoble to use
ouxiliory lights or reflectors so thot the tone ronge will
be of the order of 4,1 or less. (The tdne ronge is the
rotio of highlight to shodow brightness.) ln color photo-
grophy, moke sure thot the tone ronge is of the order
       of 4zl or less.t
2, Meosuremenf in qn Extremely Dork Ploce

B" To Delineofe the Subject in Reor Lighting

Meosure the light reflected f rom the shodow of the

            1x100
