www.butkus.us INTRODUCTION With conventional electronic flash units the most ideal exposure factors are to be calculated in accordance with the amount of light, lens opening, film speed and distance. The Soligor MK-24ASll has a built-in computer which does all the calculation foryou. It will regulate the amount of light for a proper exposure and eliminates all the guess work. The MK-24ASll includes a super sensitive sensing devise to measure the light, reflected from the subject. When the built-in computer has properly measured the amount of light needed to illuminate the subject, the remaining light is cut off auto- matically and saved for your next picture! The results are always constant evenly lit photographs. The builtin energy saving circuit makes it possible for the unit to recycle in as little as 0.3 seconds for close up pictures. lt also enables you to take more flash pictures per set of battery. With the Auto-Manual Switch set to any one of the three "A" positions, the diaphragm can be opened to a wide range of F/stops depending on the speed of the film used. All you have to do is iust press the shutter release button. With the Auto-Manual Switch set to "M", you can manually override all the automatic functions and use the Guide Number Dial, attached to the back of the flash unit. From the above you will have noticed that with the use of "A" mode when you move closer or farther away from the subject, no adiustments need to be made in the diaphragm setting. The built-in computer controls the exact lighting of the subject in relation to the distance. Maximum distance on automatic mode is 40 feet.View original page 8

HOW TO USE
1. Squeeze on both sides of the modular battery pack (3) and pull it away from the
main unit body.
2. Insert four fresh penlite (size AA) alkaline batteries into the modular battery
pack making sure the polarities are in accordance with those shown inside the
battery compartment. Replace the modular battery pack onto the main unit.
NOTE: Before attaching the flash to the camera or when removing it, make sure
. the power switch (7) is OFF.
3. To operate flash unit, push on/off switch (7) to the on position. After a few 1
seconds the ready indicator (9) will rapidly blink. The flash unit is now ready for I use. I
,l *After switching on flash unit, if it takes more than 30 seconds to activate ready- ! indicator, replace the batteries.
*When unit is not used for .long periods, remove batteries to prevent corrosion
from battery leakage. To keep flash unit in prime operation condition activate
the unit about once a week.
*After a prolonged period of storage, it may take longer than usual to charge up
the flash unit for the first few flashes. This is because the flash condenser has to
be formed.
FLASH TEST
To test the unit, press the flash test button (13), and then unit should flash.View original page 9Page 10 · Read text

F HOW TO DETERMINE SHUTTER SPEEDi : l. When using with Leaf Type shutter cameras:
Fr-r'l-I Withsynchronization.this type However,of camera,to obtainany shutterbest results,speed itwillis recommendedusually give perfectthat a
I shutter speed of 11250 or slower be used.
j 2. For use with focal-plane shutter cameras:
I With this type of camera, synchronization usually cannot be obtained unless the
' shutter speed is set to 1/50 - 1/60th second. These cameras generally have an X
speed. I mark on the shutter speed dial. Please set the shutter to "X" or a lower J necent square shutter systems enable synchronization at 1l'125 seconds. In this
case please refer to your camera instruction book on the use of a flash unit.

HINTS ON USING AUTOMATIC OPERATION
l. To confirm your shooting range is within the operational capacity of the MK-
24ASll computer, after ready light (9) comes on, press the test flash button (l 3)
and watch the conformation light (10). lf a momentary white light appears on the
confirmation indicator, then you are operating within the computer's range. lf not,
you should either shorten the camera to subject distance or use manual operation
with a larger lens opening.
2. When the background is extremely dark and its reflectivity is much lower than that
of the subject, close the aperture by half astop. Conversely, where the background
has expecially high reflectivity (for example when the subject is standing before
a white wall), open the aperture half a stop. These steps are necessary with
i extreme backgrounds to prevent erroneous readings by the sensor.
available from your MK-24ASll when taking pictures,i 3. To utilize fully the energy of subjects at distances greater than 30 feet away, it is recommended that you wait
for about 5 seconds after the ready light is on before taking the picture.
BOUNCE PHOTOGRAPHY
The convenience of automatic operation can be applied to bounce lighting which
involves "bouncing" the light off a ceiling or other reflective surfaces to obtain soft
illumination.

1. The auto mode can be used for bounce lighting.
2. After determining the position of your subject, adiust the bounce angle (5). The
flash head (2) is variable from 0o to 90o and there are click stops at 0o, 30o 50o,
and 90o as desired. Set the flash head so that it points midway between yourself
and your subject. A white ceiling is best. Avoid colored ceilings when using color
film.
3. Before taking the picture, test the flash and check confirmation light. When using
bounce lighting, it is advisable to use a high speed film (ASA400) and set the
auto/manual switch to the blue mark.

WIDE-ANGLE ILLUMINATION
The use of wide angle lenses has grown extremely popular among all photographic
enthusiats both amateur and professional, your MK-24ASll with a unique reflector
design will cover up to an extreme wide angle lens of 24mm without any supportive
accessory attachments. Full guide number is maintained shooting with either 24mm,
28mm or 35mm wide angle lens.
MANUAL OPERATION
1. Turn the Auto-manual Switch (8) to lvt (manual).
2. Match the film speed indication mark A on the Guide Number Dial (6) to the
film speed being used.View original page 13Page 14 · Read text

3. The distance between the unit and the object being photographed is shown in
figures on the upper outer side of the dial.
The figures on the top of the center dial correspond to the lens opening to be
set on your camera.
4. The formula for the interrelationship between the distance, guide number and the
lens opening is as follows:
Guide Number (GN) - Opening (F) x Distance (D) .For example: The guide number of the MK-24ASll is 80/ft. (ASA100);in case the
distance to the object is 10ft., a desired lens opening will be:
80/ft. (guide number) e
@-o =
The lens opening for the camera will be F8.
*Camera with flashmatic system.
When the guide number on the camera is set, the proper lens opening can b€
obtained automatically by focusing. The MK-24AS|l must be used in manual
operation, and no exposure meter is required.View original page 14From the M. Butkus archive. Original publisher and archive notices are retained.
