The Spiralite S R is the heart of a versatileelectronic flash system, designedto operate on

Specialdesignfeaturesmake the Spiralite SR particularly desirablefor multiflashstudio work,
home portraiture and wideanglework, as well as fo r generalelectronicflash photography.
The basic Spiralite unit consists of the head (the flash itself), an AC powe r cord and a
modified householdto PC type synch cord.
AC Operation
Plug the triple connector end of the AC cord into the power receptacleof the head.Connect
the opposite end to the standard 110 AC volt household supply. The Spiralite SR utilizes a
special two-tier neon ready light. The lower neon ready light will glow afier severalsecondsof

output. There is approximately one f stop difference between the time the lower neon is lit
and the time the upper one starts blinking. For most consistent, highest output results, wait
for the upper neon to blink before shooting.
The flash can be test fired by pressingthe open flash button
on top of the unit.
C A U T I O N : Avoid repeated "qu ick sequence" firing to
prevent overheatingand damage to the unit.

CTPIE TAHD TANDEM MOUNTING
rc$trTlfiTG Several Spiralites may be tandem mounted to each other by
mounting one into the accessoryshoe of the other. Two or three
units can be safely fired in synchronization directly off the camera J@ synch. Connect the PC synch cord from the first unit to the PC
synch receptacle of the second unit. The PC synch cord of the
second unit is in turn connected to the PC synch receptacleof the @" last unit. Connect the PC synch cord of the last unit to the
camera'ssynch terminal.
NOTE: The PC synch receptacle of each Spiralite is located on Fl----\--@{ the underside near the shoe mount. hzi# Spiralite PC extension cords, available in various lengths, give the
photographer the freedom to position the Spiralite heads as
desired, while still firing them in tandem by connecting PC
soc kets.
Caution: The use of more than 3 heads and too long extension cords should be avoided to
prevent overloading the camera's synch contacts. There is no limit to the number
of slave triggersyou can safely use for individual heads or banks of lights.
SLAVE Operation
Thc Spiralite SR is designed for ease in using as a slaved unit. Two modified "H" synch
receptaclesare provided so that even if the units are tandem mounted and synched, a single
slave such as the Spiralite Slavemaker, can still be inserted into any one of the "H" outlets.
One slave can activate a single Spiralite or an entire bank of tandem-synchedSpiralites.Slaves
other than the Slavemakermay also be used. See also "Spiratone Slave Units".

BARE BULB and RINGLITEOperation
The Spiralite SR model BB is identical to the regular SR model but is equipped with an
auxiliary receptacleand function switch on the top of the unit. The receptacleaccommodates
either a bare bulb or the cord connected to the ringlite; the function switch provides power to
the regularflashtube or to the auxiliary outlet.
BARE BULB Operation
The BARE BULB is an auxiliary flash tube, freestanding, with
no reflector, and plugs into the auxiliary receptacleof the model

producing unusually soft shadows and even lighting over a large
area, avoiding the characteristic washed out foreground and
underexposedbackground of straight-onflash. Bare Bulb lighting
floods the entire scene - the only single light source th4t covers
even an extreme 100" wide angleview.
RINGLITEOperation
The ideal light source for illuminating close-up,scientific and
medical subjectsas well as for shadow-freeproduct photography.

Exposure
While exposure is best determined with the Electronic Flash Meter, a table of guide numbers for
various ASA values is attached to the back of the Spiralite head. Divide the guide number for
the ASA speed of the fitm you are using by the flash to subject distance (in feet) to determine
the f stop for an averageexposure. When "banking" two or three Spiralites, multiply the guide
number by 1.4 or 1.7, respectivety,to find the guide number for the 2 or 3 light "banked"
system. Due to several-variables,actual results may indicate a need to alter the guide number in
order to tailor results to your personal tastes.
When using the Spiralite with batteries, the light output will be appr. one stop less than with
AC operation.
Color Balance
The Spiralite SR's "gold" flash tube is balancedfor daylight type color film and requiresno
filtration for average results. However, since color rendition is a matter of personal taste-and
will also vary depending on the color characteristicsof the film being used and the color of the
surroundings, you may wish to use a filter, such as an 81A, in order to obtain slightly warmer
resuI ts.
