  RE. Mccro-Auto-Topcor t13.5 58 mm

The RE. Mocro-Auto-Topcor f /3.5 58 mm lens, for use with the TOPCON RE Super ond RE-2
comeros, hos been speciolly designed to give optimum lens performonce ot close focusing
distonces ond in mocrophotogrophy, os opposed to the 58 mm stondord lenses which hove
been designed for giving optimum performonce ot infinity.
The Xenontor type lens, of five elements in 4 groups, hos been designed to give distor-
iion-free imoges of the highest resolution, with full illuminofion from edge to edge, ond with
best results obtoined ot the mognificotion 0.1 X, while, ot the some time, equolling the normol
stondord lens in performonce ot inffnity.
The focusing ring provides continuous helicol focusing from infinity to 26 centimeters (10
inches) or mognificotion 0.5 X. In the close-up focusing ronge, the mognificotion scole, with
mognificotions 0.1 X to 0.5X, moy olso be used.
Further continuous focusing, f rom mognificotion 0.5 X to I X (or life-sizel con be obtoined
by simply using the TOPCON RE. Auto-Ring between the lens ond body, which will, ot the

The lens hos fully qutomotic lens diophrogm oction, the some os oll RE. Auto-Topcor lensesi

Becouse the borrel length is o very short 48 mm, in spite of its 58 mm focol length, the
working distqnce from the front end of the lens borrel to the subiect is longer thon with
the normol stondord lens in close-up focusing, or l3 centimeters (5-l/8 inches) ot mognifico-
tion 0.5X, which meons thot it is much eqsier to hondle.
As with normol lenses, ihe RE. Mocro-Auto-Topcor f/3.5 58 mm lens con be used with the
Model lV Bellows, for providing further continuous lens exiensions, olthough there will be no
connection of the outomofic lens diophrogm oction, in this cose.
The 49 mm Reverse-Adopter Ring ond filters con be used, in common with mony TOpCOR
interchongeoble lenses, becouse of the 49 mm screw-in filter mount of the lens. Reversing
the lens is recommended for mocrophotogrophy over I x becouse of the more superior
opticol performonce which is then obtoined.

(5) Depth of Fleld Scole
The depth of field for the focused distonce is found from the depth of field scole on
the lens borrel, which shows the zone of opporent shorpness for ony lens opening.
ldenticol poirs of opertures qre ovoiloble on both sides of the distonce index, which is
olso the widest operture, ond these identicol poirs of opertures indicote the distqnces

The depth of field con olso be previewed by pressing the depth of field preview lever
down, with the operture set to the required operture setting (on the RE Super only).
For close-up shots, from mognificqtion 0.1 X, however, the depth of field toble should
be used becouse of the shollow depth of field, especiolly when the subiect mqtter hos
some height or depth to it, depending on the direction of picture-toking.

( 6 ) Exposure Adlustments

operture ring is moved in the some direction os the movement of the motch-point in-

However, since it is, more often thqn not, very importont to choose o lens opening

When the RE. Mocro-Auto-Topcor lens is ottoched to the bellows, with the reverse-odopter r
ring, the fully outomotic lens diophrogm oction is no longer operotive ond, therefore, the
rottochedAutomqtic Extension Tube should be on the boyonet mount of the reversed lens
(on the side towords the subiect) ond the double coble releose should be used to obtoin
semi-outomotic lens diophrogm oction.
Reod instructions provided with the outomotic exlension tube, regording operotion with the
occessory, os well os odlustment of the double coble releose, in order to coordinote

REVERSE.ADAPTERRING

The 49 mm diometer reverse-odopter ring is used for ottoching the RE. Mocro-Auto-Topcor
lens in the reverse position on the bellows, becouse the reversed lens will give superior
opticol perf ormonce f or shooting ot scoles of reproduction over | : I or mognificotion I X.
The lens is reversed ond ottoched by its screw-in filter mount to the screw mount of the
reverse-odopter ring ond then ihe boyonet mount of the reverse-odopter ring is qttoched
to the bellow ottochment. When ottoching the boyonet mount, choose the red dot {out of
three red dots), which is ori the some side os the operture index of the lens, for olignment
with the red dot on the bellows.
When the lens is reversed ond ottached, odiustment of the normol lens extension is neces-
sory becouse the principol point of focus shifts in relotion to the film plone. In other
words, odd 57 mm to the extension indicoted on the bellows. i'

IMPORTANT !

(l) Since slow shutter speeds ore mostly used in close-ups ond mocrophotogrophy, it is rec-
ommended thot o sturdy tripod or copying stond be used with o coble r€leose, becouse r
        it will improve imoge shorpness.
l2l The RE. Mocro-Auto-Topcor f /3.5 S8 mm lens gives best results when used ot f/5.6 to
f/8, rother thon being stopped down to its smollest opening.
(3) When photogrophing deep or high obiects, however, shoot with the lens diophrogm
stopped down, os much os possible, ond use o slower shutter speed.
(11 The stqndord No. I focusing screen is not recommended for close-up focusing becouse
one of the prism holves will "block-out" ot smoll lens openings. Therefore, exchonge
for the No. 2, No. 4 or No. 6 focusing screens. lf the stondord focusing screen is
used, however, focr,rs with the groundgloss oreq of the screen ond not the split-imoge
     rongefinder spot.
The some is olso lrue of the microprism focusing screen when used ot the smoll lens
     openings.
