4) Operotlon

*  Attqchment     to  the  Comero:
The lens is ottoched to the comero with greot eose ond simplicity, os with other TOPCOR
interchongeoble lenses. Simply line up the red dot (10) on the reor end of the lens bor-
rel with o similor dot on the body flonge, with the lens mount ond body mount obsolutely
porollel to eoch other, ond insert corefully. When wellseoted, turn the lens clockwise until
o full stop is mode ond it clicks into position.
Do not touch the reflex mirror when interchonging lenses.
The TOPCON boyonet mount permits speedy, simple ond occurote exchonges of the in-
terchongeoble lenses but core must be exercised to prevent domoge to the boyonet mounts.

Focusing ond Zoomlng (Chcrnging Focol Lenglhs):
Either focusing or zooming moy be undertoken first. However, in generol, focusing should
be token core of, first of oll, with the focol length set ot 205mm, ofter which the lens
  moy be zoomed. i
Focusing is much more occurote, in this cose, becouse on enlorged imoge, with shollow
depth of field, is used for focusing, ond shifting in focus will be very smoll os the lens is
zoomed in to the 87mm focol length. For greotest occurocy, however, focus ot the focol
   length required.
Focus with the distonce focusing ring (l) ond zoom with the zooming ring (5). I

Screw the tripod screw into the fripod socket screw mount (14), of the tripod socket
plote (13), ond fix the lens firmly to fhe tripod.
The lens moy be rototed so thot the comero con be used for toking elther verticol or
horizontol formot pictures. There ore clickstops ot three positions 90 degrees oport, for
obtoining verticol or horizontol formots, ond the comero moy be fixed firmly ot ony posi-
tions with the fixing screw (ll).
A strong ond sturdy tripod should be used to prevent comero vibrotion ond o tripod mount
without rubber pod should be used, so thot qttqchment will be mode directly ogoinst the
metol surfqce or o plostic pod surfqce.

 x Exposure:
Photogrophy with the zoom lens requires o little over-exposure odiustment of the reoding
token with the conventionol exposure meter, but, of course, there ore no worries when tqk-
ing exposure meosurements with the ToPcoN RE Super ond RE-2 becouse of the thru-the-
lens mirror-metering feoture of these comeros. (Reod the instruction monuol for the comero.)
When toking pictures of the open londscope, however, point the lens down ot the ground
ot obout o 30o inclinotion to get less sky in the reoding. When the subiect is bock-lighted
ond dork, or the surrounding is dork with the subiect very light, move in close to the moin
subiect for the reoding or zoom the lens to 205mm for o reoding of the dork or light
subiect oreo only, which would olso opply when toking wide-ongle photogrophs.
x Depth of Fletd:
When o subiect is focused ot o certoin distonce, the lens presents on opporently shorp

distonces, ond this zone of opporent shorpness is known os the depth of fteld.
The depth of field is greotest os the lens diophrogm is closed down ond leosf os it is
opened up. lt is greoter os the subiect-to-comero distonce is increosed ond leost ot close
focusing disionces. The depth of field olso increoses ot the shorter focol lengths ond de'
creoses ot the longer focol lengths. Finolly, the depth of field is greoter in the bockground
ond shollower in the foreground but grows progressively equol os fhe focol distonce is
decreosed.
The depth of field preview lever of the TOPCON RE Super permits octuol previewing of
the depth of field for o selected operture, especiolly when used in combinotion with o
groundgloss focusing screen.
When it is required to qscertoin the depth of field for certoin focol lengths, refer to the
depth of field toble for the focol length being used, on the following poges.

                                                                                             I

Infrored Photogrophy:
Since the infrored roys ore not visible colors but ore longer in wovelength thon the visible
white light roys, odiustments must be mode in f ocus f or the longer wovelength by extend-
ing the lens to compensote for the difference.
The lens extension required for compensotion differs with the focol length ond is, for exom-
ple, O.4mm with the 205mm focof length, 2.2mm with the 87mm focol length, etc.
Best results ore obtoined in infrored photogrophy over 20Omm ond, thus, in the cose the
