Canon, a leader in photographic technological breakthroughs, astounded the world of photography by developing the Canon AE-1, an automatic exposure camera employing the utmost in electronic sophistication. Now, for photographers desiring more personal control over their own photography, the AT-1 has been designed. lts streamlined, compact body is molded in the image of the AE-1, Canon's famous electronically controlled SLR, but with match-needle exposured control for a more direct, personal decision-making in creativity. Thus, AT-1 photography means a totally new involvement, a new pleasure in creative photography. With the AT-1, there is no complex gadgetry to determine aperture or shutter speed. lt is all up to your own judgement, to a search of your own. For perfect accuracy in exposure metering, just take a look into the viewfinder. Located to the right are two needles. In order to obtain the proper exposure you simply align the circular aperture needle with the meter needle. lt is all beautifully simple. And the viewfinder is amazingly uncluttered to give you a totally unobstructed view. With the AT-1, you will discover the pleasure of SLR photog- raphy your own way. Tho Utmost in Opeation and Handling Ease The AT-1 is an unbelievable lightweight SLR camera that has been designed to fit perfectly in your hands for easy handling. All controls on the AT-1's compact body are within easy reach ,d respond without hesitation to your fingers' every commandView original page 9

which saves valuable seconds and makes it impossible to miss
that once-in-a-lifetime*hot. To further smoothness of operation,
many of its controls perform tno or more functions which elimi-
nate any unnecessary groping for controls. For example, the
film speed (ASA) can be set by pulling up the outer ring of
the shutter speed dial; the battery power is checked by turning
the main switch to the "C" and turning itto "OFF" will cancel
the self-timer. The shutter release collar doubles as shutter
lock and self-timer switch. Also, the Power Winder A and Speed-
lite 177A couple instantaneously to all the camera functions for
quick, error-free photography in any light.
Since its body weighs only 590g. and it can accept a host of
Canon accessories, the AT-1 is truly a milestone in convenience
and handling ease, allowing the photographer to center 100%
of his attention on creative photography.
A Viewfinder for Creative Composition
By using the extremely accurate Central Emphasis Metering
system in the AT-1, optimum exposure is always obtained.
Because the meter needle is coupled to the shutter speed,
aperture value and film sensitivity in Canon FD lenses, perfect
full-aperture metering is possible. Perfect stoppeddown metering
is assured with Canon FL lenses.
To the right of the viewfinder, you can find the meter needle
and circular aperture needle and in the center is the split-image/
microprism focusing aid. The area in between the upper and
lower right index marks is the proper exposure metering zone.
The upper mark doubles as battery check index. You simply
match the needles and the result will be the photograph you
want. With the AT-1's viewf inder, you see clearly just what you
will shoot and with your subject always in sight to give free rein
to your own creativity.

POWER WINDER A
Canon
I
To keep pace with fast action, a great Canon accessory, the
porner winder A, will automatically advance the f ilm at a rate of
approximately two f rames per second. To continuously advance
the film, merely press the shutter release button. A succession of
shots may then be taken under constant exposure conditions.
Use of the Power Winder A minimizes film winding time and
camera movement and gives maximum utilization of all the
AT-1's fantastic features.
Continuous or Single Frame Shooting
You can control shooting one or more frames at a time
using the Power Winder A simply with your finger's pressure on
the shutter release button. Since f ilm advance is automatic after
every frame, this is very convenient. Shutter speeds for con-
tinuous photography range from 1/60 to 1/1000 sec. and for
single f rame photography all shutter speeds can be used'
Compact Design for Great Ease of Handling
Weighing only 300g., even with batteries loaded. the Power
Winder A is easy to carry and extremely fast and easy to mount.
Its basic loaded battery pack A is designed for both convenience
and balance in handling.

DATA BACK A
The Canon Data Back A which enables the AT-1 to imprint
data on the film at the very moment a picture is taken, has won
world-wide acclaim as an outstanding optical breakthrough. An
unprecedented photograph classification system, the Data Back
A imprints the data (month, day and year or day, month and
year) and also other numerical data in the lower right hand
corner of the picture. Three different arrangements can be
selected. lmprinting is synchronized with film exposure, and it
can also be manuallY controlled.

Canon's Unchallenged FD Lenses
(D
One of the best things about the AT-1 is the nearly fifty
Canon lenses that go on it. lf you were always to use the same
lens, most of the AT-1 's remarkable potential would go untapped.
With a personal system of Canon lenses, you will get not only
the most for your money but also the most fun out of an AT-1
The right lens can make a certain picture possible, or easier, to
take. lt can bring a far object closer or make a close subject seem
farther away or make it appear almost exactly as it does in
reality. lt can encompass the whole scene or only a very small
part of it. With special lenses, it's even possible to make a round
picture, magnify a small subiect or manipulate perspective.
The AE-1 's best friends are Canon's nearly forty FD lenses.
Each FD lens brings out the very best in the AE-1 and each
is designed to make owning it an experience of pure joy.
lf a lens with afocal lengthof around 50 or 55mm is generally
considered a normal lens because it results in a picture which
looks closest to the scene you saw, any lens with a focal length
below 50mm is a wide-angle lens. A wide-angle lens takes in niore
of a particular scene and makes objects within the scene smaller
than does a normal lens from the same shooting distance. For
sweeping landscapes and for fitting a large group of people in a
picture indoors, this is the kind of lens to pull out of yourgrab
bag. A good place to start looking for just the right one is with
a 28mm lens, which is the most popular wide-angle focal length.
New FD 28mm f 12.8

It's easier to take pictures of sports and animals with a tele-
photo lens. lt's also much easier to grab shots of people without
their noticing. That's because a telephoto lens, like a telescope,
magnifies the subject, so whether by necessity or design, you can
shoot a subject from quite a distance and still fill the picture
with it. At the same time, you will automatically crop the picture
because a telephoto lens takes in less of the scene than does a
normal lens.
Telephoto lenses are those which have a focal length longer
than 55mm. The longer the distance at which you usually shoot,
the longer the focal length you need. The 135mm focal length
is very popular for its convenience and suitability in a wide
variety of typical situations.
New FD 135mm f/3.5
Once you've focused, you can actually change the focal length
of a zoom lens and still have your sublect in focus. Turning
a ring on the lens or pushing the lens in and out is all it takes to
zero in on your subject from an overall view. Or the other way
around. When you don't have time to move back and forth or
to change lenses to compose your picture exactly the way you
want it, only a zoom lens can do the trick. Be sure to check out
the FD 100-200mm f/5.6 lens. lts compactness, easy handling
and reasonable price make it a real winner.
