IPrecautions
' Before using the camera for an important event, be sure to take test
shots to make sure the camera operates properly.
. EOS cameras have a lens mount for dedicated operation
(autofocusing,exposurecontrol,etc.) with EF lenses.Using a non-EF
lens with an Eos camera may not result in proper camera or lens
operation.
Note that the warranty does not cover any camera malfunctionor
damage occurring with the use of non-Canon accessories.

HandlingPrecautions
Camera Care
(1) This camerais not waterproofand cannotbe usedin rainor under
water.lf the cameragets reallywet, promptlyconsultyour nearest
CanonServiceCenter.lf thereare any waterdropletson the camera,
wipe off with a dry cloth.lf the camerahas beenexposedto salt air,
wipewitha clean,well-wrung,dampcloth.
(2) Do not leavethe camerain placesproneto excessiveheatsuchas in a
car on a sunnyday. Excessiveheatcan causethe camerato
malfunction.
(3) Use only a blowerbrushto removeany duston the lensor in the film
compartment.Do not use a cleanercontainingorganicsolventto clean
the camerabodyor lens.For stubborndirt,consultyour nearestCanon
ServiceCenter.
(4) Whenyou will not be usingthe camerafor an extendedperiod,remove
the batteries.Storethe camerain a well-ventilated,cool,dry place.
Releasethe shuttera few timesoccasionallyto makesurethe camera
stillworks.
(5) Avoidstoringthe camerain a laboratory,cabinet,etc.,wherecorrosive
chemicalsare present.
(6) Beforeusingthe cameraafteran extendedperiodof disuse,checkthat
all the cameracontrolsfunctionproperlyor take it to the nearestCanon
ServiceCenterfor inspection.Do this especiallybeforeshootingan !i importanteventor goingon a trip.

LCD Panel
In time,the camera'sLCD paneldisplaymay fade and becomedifficultto
read.lf this happens,haveit replaced(at cost)by a CanonServiceCenter.
. At low temperatures,the LCD panel'sdisplayresponsemay become
slower.And at 60"Cor highertemperatures,the displaymay blacken.In

HandlingPrecautions
Lithium Batteries
(1) The cameraoperateson two CR2 lithiumbatteries.Checkthe battery
levelin the followingcases:
. Afterreplacingthe batteries.
. Afternot usingthe camerafor an extendedperiod.
. The shutterstopsworking.
. The camerais beingusedin a low-temperatureenvironment.
. You willbe shootingan importantevent.
(2) Beforeinstallingthe batteries,wipethe batterycontactsto removeany
fingerprintsand smudges.Thisis to preventfaultyconnectionsand
corrosion.
(3) Althoughthe batteriesworkwell evenat low temperatures,battery
performancemaydeclineslightlyat freezingtemperatures.In sucha
case,keepsparebatterieswarmin a pocket,etc.,and use and warm
the batteriesalternately.
How Low Battery Levels Affect Camera Operation
Evenwhen ;)q! nfinf<son the LCD panel,a properexposurewill be
obtainedas longas the shutterreleases.However,-sincethe batterylevel
is low,film advanceand auto rewindmay not work.Replacethe batteries
withnewones.
Lens electrical contacts
After detaching the lens from the camera,
put on the lens caps or put down the lens
with the rear end up to avoid scratching
the lens surface and electricalcontacts.

Installingthe Batteries
The camera uses two lithiumCR2 batteries.
Slidethe batterychambercover 4 leveras shown by the arrow and ffi
open the batterychambercover.
Insert the batteries with the
contacts (+ and -) oriented as
shown on the battery chamber
cover.
. Do not mix old and new batteries.
Close the battery chamber cover.
Press the cover until it snaps
shut.

Checking the Battery Level
Check the battery level after replacingthe batteries and before using the
camera.
Turn the Command Dial to any
setting except <E>.
. The camerawillthenturnon and the
LCDpanelwilldisplayone of the
followingbatterylevelicons:

. Operating the cimera without film will still corflfil*il power. lt will
reducethe number of rollsthat can be taken with the batteries.
lf nothing is displayedon the LCD panel, the batteriesmay have been
installedincorrectly.Take out the batteriesand installcorrectly (See page 16).
For places where CR2 batteriesmay not be easily available,take spare
batterieswith you. Also carry spare batteriesfor extended shooting sessions.

Remove the rear lens cap and the
camera body cap.
Align the red dots on the lens and
camera and turn the lens as
shown by the arrow until it snaps
in place.
On the lens, set the focus mode
switch to AF.

not operate.
. Whilethe lensautofocuses,do not

Detachingthe Lens
While pressing the lens release
button, turn the lens as shown by

The EOS camera's shutter button can be depressed halfway or all the way.
There is a click stop at the halfway point.
Pressing the Shutter Button Halfway or Completely
The shutter button works as described below.
When it is pressed halfway:
. Autofocusing is activated,and when
focus is achieved,the beeper sounds
and the viewfinder'sin-focusindicator
lights in green.
. The shutterspeed and apertureare
also set and displayedon the LCD
panel and in the viewfinder.
When it is pressed completely:
. The shutter is released to take the
pictureand the film advancesby one
frame.
Cameramovementduringthe momentof exposureis calledcamerashake.
Camerashakecan causeblurredpictures.
To preventblurredpicturesdueto camerashake:
. Holdthe camerasteady(seepage22).
. Usethe centerof yourfingerto touchthe shutterbutton,graspthe camera
withyourentirerighthand,then pressthe shutterbuttongently.

Loading and UnloadingFilm
Loading Film
After you load the film, the camera first winds the entire roll onto the
camera'stake-upspool. Then each time a pictureis taken, one frame of
film is rewoundback into the film carlridge.
Turn the Command Dial to any
setting except <E>.
Slide up the camera back lock-
release lever to open the camera
back.
,r Insert the film cartridge at an
angle as shown in the figure.
, Hold down the film cartridge and
pull the ed_geof the film leader to
the orange mark on the camera.
Then close the camera back.
. Pressdownthefilmcartridgesothatit isset
securelyandthefilmdoesnotslacken.
. lf theedgeofthefilmleadergoesbeyond
theorangemark,pushsomeof thefilm
backintothecartridge.
. Whilethefilmis prewindingaroundthetake-
r l r upspool,theISOfilmspeedwillbe

Whenit stops,camerawillmakea shutter-

Loadingand UnloadingFilm
. With DX-coded film, the camera automaticallysets the film's ISO speed.
.lf the film is not DX-coded, set the ISO speed manually. See page 57.
.Infrared film cannot be used with this camera.
. The shutter curtains are manufacturedwith very
high precision.To prevent damage, never touch the
shuttercurtains.When loadingor unloadingfilm, be
careful not to touch the shutter curtain with vour
fingersor the film.
UnloadingFilm
After the film's last frame is exposed,the camera rewindsthe film
automatically.
When the film rewind ends, the camera
will make a shutter-releasesound and
the <@> icon will blinkon the LCD
'(- panel. Before openingthe camera
I;l back to unloadthe exposedfilm, make
sure the icon is blinking.

To rewindthe film before reachingthe last frame, follow the steps below.
Press the <O.. > button.
. The filmwillstartrewinding.The
operationwillthenbe the sameas
normalfilm rewind.
Open the camera back and
remove the film.

Holdingthe Camera
lf you remove the film from the camera in midroll without rewindingand then
load a new roll of film, the new roll's film leader will only be wound back into
the film cartridge.To prevent this, close the camera back and press the
shutter button completely before loading a new roll of film.

To avoidtakinga blurredshot,holdthe cameraproperlyas described
below.
For horizontalshooting. For vertical shooting.

Automatic Firing of the Built-in Flash
In the <E>,4$v, <V>, and <Ei> modes,the built-inflashpops up and
fires automaticallyunder low-lightor backlitconditions.
lf the automaticpop-upof the built-inflash is obstructedaccidentally,the
. t]!,it iconwill blinkon the LCDpanelas a warning.lf this happens,press
the shutterbuttonhalfway.The camerawillthenreturnto normal.

AF-Assistwith the Built-inFlash
In the BasicZonemodesand CreativeZonemodes,the AF-assistlamp
lightsautomaticallywhennecessary.
Underlow-lightconditions,the built-inflashflashescontinuouslywhenyou
pressthe shutterbuttonhalfway.Thisis to illuminatethe subjectto enable
easierautofocusing.
. AF-assistdoesnot functionin the <l > and < {1 > modes.
. The AF-assistlightis effectiveup to about4 meters/ 13.2feet.
. ln a CreativeZonemode,pressthe flashbuttonto pop up the flash.The
AF-assistlightwillthenturnon whennecessary.
. Whenan externalEOS-dedicatedSpeedliteis attachedto the camera,the
externalSpeedlite'sbuilt-inAF-assistlampwillfunction.
. The AF-assistlightworksin BasicZoneand CreativeZonemodes.
Single-frameand ContinuousShooting
Thefilmadvancemode(singleor continuous)whenthe shutterbuttonis
helddownis set automaticallyby the respectivepicture-takingmode.
