It is advisableto move the film by hand until the perforationsproperlyengagethe sprockets. Close the back of the camera by pushing the latch down. To eliminate that portion of the film exposedby loading the camera and to bring fresh film into taking position, turn the winding lever three times. Be careful to move the lever each time as far as it will go. Push the body trigger releaseand repeat operation. Now the film is in taking position. The film counterindicatesthe number of picturesstill remainingin the cassetteand, there- fore, must be set on "20" or "36" (dependingon the film used). The fitm counter is set through the setting knob either with your fingernailor with a smal coin. The film counter can be moved in either direction. You are now ready to take the first picture.View original page 8

body releaseand keep it down if desiredwith a locking cable release, while holding the
cameraup to your eye. The diaphragmcan then be seen againstthe light. Pleasenote that
if the pointer is moved from f 2,8 to f 16 the openingbehind the lens gets smaller. This
variablediaphragmopeningcontrolsthe amountof light that can enter the cameraat any
given shutterspeed. When taking picturesindoors, when all the availablelight is required
to enter the camera, use a larger diaphragm setting such as | 2,8 or f 3,5. When taking
picturesin sunlight, when the preventionof too much light from enteringthe camerais
desired,a small openingas f 8 should be used.
Depth of l'ield:
An importantcharacteristicof lens operationsis worth noting. When a smalldiaphragmope-
ning is used, the resultingsnapshothas a large depth of field. Objects in front of and in
back of the focusseddistancewill registersharply in focus. When a large diaphragmopening
is used, only a short distancebefore and after the focusseddistance will also be in focus.
On the shutter is engraved the depth of field table which indicatesthe depth of field

The amount of light which falls on the film can be controlledin two ways;
1. By regulatingthe diaphragmopening,
2. Through the various shutter speeds.
The stoppingdown of the diaphragmopening gives you the advantageof a greater depth
of field, In general use a speed of 'lrs or l/so sec. and regulate the diaphragm according
to prevailinglfght conditions. However, when pictures of fast moving objects have to be
taken, a faster speed,say 1/roosec., must be selected.In this case,of course,a larger stop
must be used.
We recommendthe use of one of the light meterssold by your photo dealer. If you a colour 9re
enthusiastan electricalexposuremeter is useful becauseof its accuracy.
To facilitatethe tacing of pictures for the beginner there is a so-called universalsetting.
Set your camera for the speed of 'lru or 'luo sec. depending on the light, and set
your distanceon 20 ft. The diaphragmopening should be F : B. In this position, most of the

objects in front of the camerawill be sharp in the picture, and the exposuretime will also
be correct. However, this universalsetting can be used only on certain days and only
with black-andwhite film since there is a wider exposure latitude with black-andwhite-
film. Colour pictureshave to be exposedvery accurately.lf you use colour film we suggest
that you follow the instructionsgiven by the film manufacturers. Also, if you want to take
picturesof moving objects, you will have to use a faster speed and a large diaphragm
opening.Follow rules about shutter speedsfor moving objects. Colour pictures should not
be taken with a diaphragmopening slowerthan F. 6,5. Our lensesare thereforespecially
correctedfor the diaphragmopening speed range from full opening to F. 8.
Taking the Pieture:
Hold the camerawith both hands so that the viewfinderwindow is in front of the right eye.
Trip the shutter with the forefingerof the right hand and wind the film with the thumb of
the right hand. As pointed out in the introduction,it is in this way possibleto take pictures
in fast sequencewithout removing the camerafrom your eye, and on the modelwith coupled
rangefinder, you can set the distanceat the same time.
After having made your exposure you move the film for the next picture by winding

the lever twice. Our camerais designedfor doublewinding of the levet becauseit takesthe same time as single winding (the way is the same) but it is more coi-nfortable.The lever comes back into the original position automatically. While transportingthe film the rewind knob turns and you can observeif the film is properly transported. f nloading Camera: After all the pictureshave been taken the film must be rewound into the original cassette. Move the rewind button to rewind position(to the left). Then rewindthe film into the cassette by turning the rewind knob clockwise. As long as there is still film in the camerayou feel the effort of winding, which stops as soon as all of the film is back in the cassette. You can further control this operationby observingthe numbersof the counter which moves back- wards, and when the film is rewoundit showsNo. 56 or 20 again (dependingon the film used). Flash Pietures: On the shutter there is a flash synchronipple into which the plug of the flash cable is inserted. All of the shuttersare synchronizedfor the speedsol ,lu, and slower for flash andView original page 16

bulbs and at all speedsfor electronicflashguns. The Prontor SVS shutter however is fully
synchronized, that means, flash picturescan be taken with all speedsusing flash bulbs and
electronicguns, provided the separateshutter instructionsare followed.
Treatment of the Edixa:
It is advisableto keep the camera in the EvereadyCase at all times since the case will
protect it from dust. The case is designedso that it does not have to be removed when
taking pictures.
Treat your EDIXA cameragently and carefully.Frometime to time the interior of the camera
should be cleanedand the dust removed with a fine camelhair brush. Particularywhen you
take the camerato the beach, fine sand may enter and causescratcheson the lens and the
film. The lens and differentparts of the camera should be cleanedwith a soft cutton cloth
(which has been washedseveraltimes without detergents)soakedin alcohol.
