Introdtrctor)r
presenting this, our fourth annual catalogue,
to the photographers of the West, we wish
to congratulate both ourselves and our pa-
trons upon the satisfactory condition now
existing in photographic circles.
The new century sees photography ac-
knowledged as one of the fine arts. Never
before in the history of the world has there
been such universal interest displayed in
any' single branch of the arts as there has
been in photography during the past twelve
months. The universal application of
photography to the sciences and. to the
events of every day life, together with its artistic possibilities, has
been responsible for the energy displayed by the manufacturers
in placing at the disposal of the photographer improved devices
by which even the serious work of the professional becomesalmost
play.
In this catalogue we do not quote or describe articles of doubt-
fu1 merit or utility, neither do we attempt to impress upon the
prospective purchaser of photographic appliances the fact that any
one single article listed in the succeeding pages is the one and only
article for him to buy. On the other hand, we have dispensedwith
a1i superfluous verbage and have presented. in plain terms the
merits of the numerous liues carried in stock by us.
In selecting a photographic outfit many things are to be
considered, the principal one being the adaptability of the lens
and camera to the class of work to be d.one. The scientist does
not select his appliances at rand.om, neither d.oesthe artisan pur-
chase his tools by guess work. Before purchasitg, both carefully
investigate the merits of the appliance desired.and carefully con-
sider its applicability to the work to be done. The amateur, in
purchasing a new outfit or adding to an o1d one, should display the
same d.iscretion as the scientist and the artisan. Therefore, we
advise each intending " purchaser to read the pages which follow
\- ,*t'.' "a{ ;View original page 4Page 5 · Read text

with great care, always keeping in mind the fact that a good out-
fit at the start means less expense, less worry and more artistic and
satisfactory results.
Listed in the pages of this catalogue will be found the most
important numbers of all of the principal lines of cameras made
in the United. States. On our shelves will be found every single
camera mentioned.,thus our patrons will not have to wait for weeks,
pending the arriva\ from the East of some instrument ord.eredby
him. If further information is desired than is contained.in these
pages, we will at all times be pleased to describe fu1ly any instru-
ment designated.. When desired, special catalogues containing full
information on any particular line will be sent to your add.ress.
Before being shipped every lens so1d.by us is carefully tested.
by an expert and the whole working mechanism of the camera is
carefully examined. We pay especial attention to packing and
nothing is shipped by us until we are satisfied.that it will reach its
d'estination in perfect condition.
We wish to call especial attention to our line of high-grade
lenses, which we believe to be the largest carried. by any house
west of New York. The necessity of using a lens fu1ly corrected
is apparent to every worker and. the constant demand for fast lenses
coupled with the greatest optical excellence has ind.uced.us to form
connections with all of the leading manufacturers by which we are
enabled to supply from stock and on short notice ary lens d.esired.
Our foreign trade is our especial pride and great care is taken
in our Export Department to pack all goods with a view to the
rough handling incid.ent to a long voyage. The popularity and
relative cheapnessof American photographic good.sabroad.has been
responsible for the creation of this d.epartment, and promptness
in shipping has mad.e for us many friend.s in the ranks of our
neighbors across the water.
Generally our goods will be found on sale at all dealers, but
if your dealer does not handle them they can be obtained direct
from our houses.
In conclusion we wish to impress upon the minds of the
amateurs that our stock is the largest in the West and that prompt-
ness in filling orders is one of our chief accomplishments.

Many mistakes occur in writing orders, and purchasers should carefully read
their letters before mailing them. Always sign your name and, no matter how
frequently you write us, add the address.
fn ordering paper always specify size, quality and name. Do not order
" one gross paper, same as last time."
Remember that Seed, Cramer, IIammer, Lovell and the other plate manufac-
turers make several brands of plates, so do not fail to mention the particular brand
of the make you wish.
Most all of our d.ry chemicals are put up in both bottle and carton form. If
you have a preference d,o not fail to state it.
In ordering carleras give the name, number, size, and the number of the
catalogue page containing the description, to avoid all possibility of mistake.
F
When ordering the Thornton-Pickard Before the Lens shutter enclose with
the order a slip of paper which fits the hood'of the lens. Do not send a pencil
sketch, but take a strip of paper and wind it around the hood of the lens so that
the ends meet. The same instructions hold good in ordering ray filters.
F
If you wish repairs made upon your camera, describe to us fully the trouble
and we will estimate the charge for repairs.View original page 7Page 11 · Read text
