, matic film-speed setting, and automatic built-in electronic SENSALITETM Flash with
v fill-flash and flash defeat modes. A self-timer, close-up focusing, and automatic
film advance and rewind add to the convenience of the KODAK St t ooxt- Camera.
The KODAK S1100XL Camera also features a large LCD panel that displays frame
number, battery condition, fill-flash mode, and self-timer mode.
Before using your camera, read the manual carefully so you can take advantage of
the camera's many features. When planning to take important pictures, such as of
a vacation or a wedding, we recommend you first expose a test roll of film and have
it processed. This checks the camera and your operation of it.

CHECKING THE BATTERY
When you plan on using your camera, always check the condition of your battery.
To do this:
 1. Open the flash cover (1) to expose the lens (4). Opening the flash cover turns
the camera on and activates the LCD panel (13).
2. Make sure the battery symbol (22) appears on the LCD panel. lf it appears and
does not blink, the battery is good and you are ready for picture-taking.
3. lf the battery symbol blinks, the battery is weak but pictures may still be taken.
4. lf no battery symbol appears, the battery is too weak for picture-taking. Replace
the battery with one of the batteries recommended.
NOTE: Your 31100XL Camera features an automatic shut-off mode to conserve
battery power. lf you do not use your camera for approximately 60 seconds, power
is shut off and the LCD panel turns off. To reactivate the camera, gently touch the
shutter release (14), close and open the cover flash, or take a picture.
Battery Tips
o When the battery symbol blinks to warn you of a weak battery, we recommend
  having a spare battery available.
o lf you activate your camera by opening the flash cover and the LCD panel does
not light, your battery may be exhausted.
o Battery performance is reduced at low temperatures (below 32"F [0"C]). Carry a
spare battery when using your camera in cold weather. Keep the camera warm
View original page 7
Page 8 · Read text
until just before using it and use two batteries, alternately warming each one in
your pocket. Don't throw away a battery that has become unusable because of
cold weather. Once it is warmed to room temperature, you may be able to use it
   again.
o Occasionally clean the battery compartment contacts with a pencil eraser or a
clean, dry, rough cloth. Do NOT use water or sandpaper. See your dealer for a
  replacement battery.
o lf you won't be using the camera for a long time, remove the battery.
CAMERA NECKSTRAP
Unbuckle the camera neckstrap. Insert the strap through the camera-strap slot (8),
through the shoulder pad, and then rebuckle.
LOADING THE FILM
Always load and unload your film in subdued light. Loading in bright sunlight
could fog the film.
1. Slide the film compartment latch (12) in the direction of the arrow on the
camera to open the film compartment door.
2. Insert the film magazine into the film chamber (18). Check the film loading
diagram in the film chamber for proper position of the film magazine.
3. Pull the film leader towards the take-up spool (20). Align the end of the film with
the film load mark (21). Make sure the film perforations engage with the sprocket
   teeth (19).

4. Close the film compartment door. This illuminates the LCD panel. The camera
automatically advances the film and the exposure counter (24) on the LCD
panel to "1". The LCD panel stays illuminated for 4 seconds and then turns off.
lf the frame counter on the LCD panel blinks "0", the film is not properly loaded.
Open the door and start again.
NOTE: Do NOT press the manual rewind switch when loading film, as this com-
pletely rewinds the film into the film magazine.
The type of film you load in the camera shows in the film window (11). Since the
camera senses the speed of DX-encoded film automatically, there is no film-speed
dial to set. lf you are using non-DX-encoded film, the camera automatically sets
itself to ISO 25. You are now ready for picture-taking.
PICTURE-TAKING
1. Lift the flash cover (1) to its fully open position to expose the lens. The flash
charges within 3 seconds (with a fresh battery), and the red flash-charging
                   (30) in the viewfinder goes out. lf you do not use the camera indicator I
within 60 seconds, it automatically enters the shut-off mode to conserve battery
power and the LCD panel turns off. The camera is reactivated when you take a
picture. To turn on the LCD panel without taking a picture, genily touch the
shutter release, or close and open the cover flash.
2. Position your subject in the luminous frame (26) of the viewfinder (10). The area
that you see within the luminous frame will be included in your picture. The
auto-focus brackets (27) within the luminous frame of the viewfinder indicate

where the camera multiple auto-focus is aimed. For close-up subjects 1.9 to
3.3 ft (0.6 to 1.0 m) away, tilt the camera up slightly and use the parallax-correc-
tion marks (29) to frame the top edge of the picture.
3. Hold the camera steady and gently press the shutter release halfway. For
close-up pictures, the close-up symbol V (32) glows.4. Gently squeeze the shutter release to tak-e a picture. lf flash was used, the
flash-charging indicator glows. Wait for it to go out before taking another
    picture.
FOCUS
Automatic Foctts
ln the normal mode, the camera automatically focuses on the nearest subject
within the auto-focus brackets (see Figure A).
CAUTION: Be very careful not to block the infrared focusing window (9) or the
exposure sensor (5) as this effects your picture quality.
Focus Lock
Use the focus lock when your main subject is located outside the auto-focus
brackets (27) or for any of the situations mentioned below.

Occasionally, there are situations that confuse the auto-focus system. When pho-
tographing the following situations, focus on another object that is at a similar
distance from the camera, using the focus-lock feature.
o Subjects behind glass.
o Small objects which cannot fill the auto-focus frame marks.
o Glossy surfaces, such as a car body.
. Water surfaces with strong reflections.
o Surfaces with almost no light reflection, such as dark hair.
o Subjects without a definite mass, such as flame or smoke.
o Very bright light sources.
1. Aim the camera so the subject is within the auto-focus brackets (see Figure B).
2. Depress the shutter release halfway until the green AF (auto-focus) indicator
glows AF (31). This sets the focus. lf the close-up indicator (32) glows, you are
within the range for taking a close-up of the subject (minimum focus distance is
   1.9 feet [0.6 m]). /
3. As you hold the shutter release halfway down, recompose your picture (see
   Figure C).
4. Then gently squeeze the shutter release to take the picture.
5. To cancel the focus lock, remove your finger from the shutter release.

Gentral Auto Focus
For some pictures the main subject may not be the nearest object within the
auto-focus brackets (see Figure D).

1. Make sure your subject is within the center-focus circle (28) in the viewfinder.
2. Press and hold the CAF (central auto focus) button (17) while aiming at your
subject. The AF symbol (31) should appear in the viewfinder. Depress the
shutter release to take the picture.
3. To cancel CAF, remove your finger from the CAF button.
Flash Pictures
The camera features automatic flash that fires as needed or when the fill-flash
switch is activated. When the flash indicator (30) blinks, the flash needs to
recharge. Remove your finger from the shutter release and wait about 3 seconds
for the flash indicator to go out before taking a picture.
Keep the subject within the distance range for the speed of the film in your camera.

Flash Tlps
. when taking color flash pictures, people's eyes sometimes appear red. The red
is caused by reflections from the retinas in the subject's eyes. To minimize the
reflections, turn on roomlights and have the subject lace the lights.
. Stand at an angle to shiny objects like windows or mirrors, otherwise light from
the flash can reflect from the shiny surface and produce a bright spot in your
   photograph.
Fill Flash
Bright light can create intense shadows on your subject. By using the fillflash, you
can lighten these shadows (see Figures E and F). To use the fill flash, push the
flash fill/defeat switch (2) to the [Tl position. Check the LCD panet for the
fill-flash symbol (25). To cancel fill flash, push the switch again to the right.

Flash Defeat
You may want to turn off the flash to avoid reflections when taking pictures of a
bright scene through a window, to keep a dark scene dark, or to obey rules
prohibiting flash. To turn off or "defeat" the flash, push and hold the flash
fillldefeat switch (2) to the @ position. Continue hotding the switch as you take
the picture. To cancel flash defeat, release the switch.

Self-Timer
             1. Use the tripod socket (6) to attach the camera to a tripod, or place the camera
             on another firm support.
             2. Afier composing the picture, press the self-timer button (15). The self-timer
symbol (23) on the LcD panel appears. Depress the shutter release. (Do not
stand in front of the picture-taking lens while depressing the shutter release as
the auto-focus will lock on you rather than the scene.) The self-timer indicator
                  (3) on the front ol the camera glows red for 7 seconds, then blinks for the last
3 seconds before exposure. The self-timer automatically turns off after a picture
                      is taken.
. lf you want to use the self timer while taking a picture with the subject located
"off center" in the viewfinder, you must Jirst use the focus lock. Push the
self-timer button; position a subject in the center of the viewfinder and depress
the shutter release halfway to lock the focus. Then recompose your picture and
depress the shutter release fully to activate the self-timer'
             3. To cancel the self-timer, press the self-timer switch or close the cover flash.
         UNLOADING FILM
             Automatic Rewinding
Within a few seconds after the last picture is taken, the film automatically starts to
rewind (approximately 40 seconds for a 36-exposure magazine), the frame counter
on the LCD panel counts down to "0", and the camera motor stops.
NOTE: Frequently you may obtain a few extra exposures, such as 26 with a
             24-exposure magazine.
