BEFORE TAKING PICTURES ]
 Installing batteries
The automatic-focus, exposure, flash, fi lm advance, rewind, and electronic-indication systems of
your Minolta Hi-matic AF2-M are powered by two AA size-(penlight) alkaline-manganese (Eveready
 E9 1 or equivalent), sealed carbon-zinc, or rechargeable nickel-cadmium (Ni-cd) battenes.
To properly install batteries, proceed as follows:
 1. Open the battery-chamber cover by sliding it in the direction of the arrow and lifting it as shown (B 1).
2. After wiping the terminals with a clean, dry cloth, insert two batteries with their plus (+) and minus (-) ends positioned as indicated by the diagram inside the chamber (C).
3. Then close the cover by holding it down and sliding it in the direction of the arrow. Let it snao
back in the opposite direction (B-2)

CAUTIONS
o Mixing of battery types, or using an exhausted battery with a fresh one could cause battery leakage
   or bursting.
o lf the batteries are reversed, the camera will not operate and battery leakage or bursting could
    resu I t.

NOTES
o Ni-Cd cells should only be charged in their designated chargers.
o Ni-Cd cells perform better at low temperatures than either carbon-zinc or a lka line-manganese
batteries. Therefore, Ni-cd cells are recommended for use in cold weather.
o When new batteries are installed, wait approx. 15 seconds before taking pictures.

Checking batteries
The camera's batteries should be checked immediately after being installed and from ti me to time
thereafter, especially before starting on trips or taking important pictures.
To check battery strength for the camera's exposure system, cover the CdS cell with your hand
(D-1) and look through the viewfinder. Depress the shutter-release button slightly lD-2l..lf the steady
audible-warning signal, and flash-use indicator lamp (I) at the bottom of the viewfinder come on,
the batteries are serviceable. lf they do not come on, or go off after a few seconds, the batteries should
be replaced with fresh ones.
lf motor operation seems too slow or the film fails to advance after taking a picture, change the
batteries.
To check battery strength for the camera's flash system, pop up the built-in flash (L) and time
how long it takes for the monitor lamp (A-19,II) to light. lf the monitor lamp comes on within 30
seconds when using alkaline-manganese or carbon-zinc cells, and 10 seconds with Ni-Cd cells, the
batteries are serviceable. When recycle times become longer than this, batteries should be replaced
with fresh ones. To conserve power, be sure to push the flash all the way back into the camera after
checking the batteries.
To prevent unsatisfactory operation, a special device built into your camera locks the shutter so
that oictures can not be taken if batteries are too weak or
if there are none in the camera. Thus if you can not IIrelease the shutter, Vou should install or change batteries.

Loading and advancing film
Your Minolta Hi-matic AF2-M can use any standard 35mm film cartridge. To properly load your
camera, proceed as follows:
1. Slide the back-cover release as indicated by the arrow untilthe back cover springs open (E).
2. Place a film cartridge into the chamber from an angle as shown (F), rotating the cartridge if
necessary to fit into the protruding rewind key. Never force the cartridge into the chamber.
Slightly turn the take-up-spool knob with your finger to the right to open the film retainer as wide
    as possible (G).
3. Insert the end of the film leader all the way in and under the grey film retainer (H), and push the
shutter-release button pointing the camera foward bright area. The film will advance automatically.
Make sure the perforations on the top and bottom of the film are engaged with the sprocket's teeth
      il).
4. Close the back cover until it snaps shut.
5. Push the shutter-release button repeatedly until the figure "'1 " appears in the center of the frame
counter (J-1). (Exposure warning may sound when loading film in subdued light.) lf the film is
loaded correctly, an orange signal will appear in the right side of the Safe-Load Signal window
lJ-21 .lt it does not appear, open the camera back and repeat the above loading procedure. As you
take pictures, the edge of the orange signal will move to the left to indicate that the film is
   advancing properly.

Setting film speed
Each film on the market has an exposure-index number to indicate its sensitivity to light. To
obtain correct exposure with the automatic exposure system of your camera, you must set it for the
film in use. To set this, turn the film-speed dial until ASA/lSO number indication of the film you are
using is aligned with the index in the film-speed window (K).
The film speed scale is:
25.' 50. . 100' . 200. . 400
Dots denote ASA/ISO speeds of 32, 40,64,80, 125,160,250, and 320 respectively, from left to
right.
DIN system equivalents for this scale are:
ASA 25.-50. . 100 . .200 ' .400

Automatic focusing
Under normal conditions, with the subject more than
1.2m 14 ft.) from the camera, compose the subject or
scene within the viewfinder's normal-framing guide (lII).
When the subject is between 1 - 1.2m (3.3 - 4 ft.) away, use the close-framing guides (IV) to compose the picture.
For the camera to focus correctly, the subject or area
of the scene you want to be in focus should be centered
in the viewfinder and fully covered by the auto-focus
zone marks (V). lf your subject falls outside the auto-focus
zone the camera may not focus correctly and'you should
use the focus hold, as explained on page 10.
After you have composed your subject or scene, slightly depress the shutter-release button until
one of the LED focus-zone signals (VI) comes on. This indicates that the camera has measured the
camera-to-subject distance and will set the focus automatically when the shutter-release button pressed
all the way down.
lf the upper LED focus-zone signal blinks and a beeping audible signal comeson (Upper) when the
shutter-release button is slightly depressed, you are too close to the subject for the camera to focus. lf
this happens, increase the camera-to-subject distance until you get a steady LED focus-zone signal
(VI) and the audible warning does not comes on when you depress the shutter-release is button
smoothly. When you have composed your scene and no warning signals come on, press the shutter
release smoothly all the way down to take the picture.
NOTES
o Always press the shutter-release button down in one smooth motion. Pressing the button too
    quickly could cause blurred pictures.
Keep the auto-focus windows cleanwww.butkus.usand free of obstructions, as this could cause incorrect measuring of the focus distance.
Use of any lens shade or hood could obstruct the auto-focus windows and cause the camera to
   focus incorrectly.

CAUTION
Under certain conditions the auto-focus mechanism may not function properlyi they are as
f ollows:
1. When there is an extremely bright light source of reflecting light around the auto-focus zone.
2. When the subject is highly lustrous or reflective, such as the surface of water, polished metal, or
  m irro rs.
3. When the subject is unsubstantial or highly unreflective, such as flame, hair, or black oblects'
4. When there is glass in front of the subject.
ln the above cases, focus on another subject the samedistance away and use the focus hold. Then
recompose the scene and take the picture.
Focus hold
Sometimes conditions or the desired composition of scene will not allow placing the subject within
the auto-focus zone of the viewfinder. This may cause the subject or most important area of the scene
to be out of focus.
With the camera,s focus-hold feature you can prefocus on a specific area or subject before you take
the picture, and then recompose the scene the way you want'
To use the focus hold, Proceed
 as follows: ttY'
 1. Aim the camera so that the "'
   main subject covers the auto-
    focus zone (lef t).
2. Slightly depress the shutter-
release button until one of the
  LED focus-zone signals (VI)
   comes on (right).
3. While still keeping the shutter-
release button slightly depressed, recompose your scene (right) and press the shutter-release button
down all the way to take the picture.

NOTES
Releasing the slightly depressed shutter button cancels the focus hold, so you can prefocus the
camera as often as you wish.
Automatic €xposu re control
After framing your subject in the viewfinder, depress the shutter-release button slightly to
determine the light level.
lf the flash-use indicator lamp at the bottom of the viewfinder and a steady audible warning
signal do not come on, light is adequate for normal hand-
held exposures.
lf the flash-use indicator lamp and a steady audible
signal do come on (right), it indicates the camera's shutter
speed will be 1l40 sec. or slower and the built-in flash or
a tripod should be used to avoid blurred pictures.
After you have determined the light level, hold the
camera in a comfortable position and press the shutter
release all the way down to take the picture.

NOTE
No camera adjustments are necessary if filters are used,
since the CdS cell meters light that passed through the filter.
Automatic flash photography
When the flash-use indicator lamp and a steady audible signal come on with the shutter release
slightly depressed, you should use the built-in flash if it is suitable for your subject or if slow shutter

exposures are the same as above except that the flash range for transparency (slide) films is 1 to 2m
8|3-1/3 to 6-213 ft.) and the range for negative films is 1.5 to 5m (5 to 16 ft.). Thedegree of flash fill
willvary with the lighting conditions and focused distance of the lens.

NOTE
The flash will have no effect in bright daylight situations such as beach or snow scenes.
Self-timer
Your camera's self-timer delays release of the shutter for about 1O seconds, allowing time for you
to get in the picture yourself.
   To use the self-timer:
1. Compose your subject in the viewfinder. lf you are the main subject. focus on some object that is
about the same distance you intend to be f rom the camera.
2. f urn the self-timer lever (M) in the direction of the arrow as far as it will go until it catches.
3. Depress the shutter-release button all the way down, the red LED indicator on the front of the
camera will light to show the delay cyclewww.butkus.ushas started. About 3.5 seconds before the shutter is
released, the LED indicator will start blinking and an audible signal will sound.

o lf you do not plan to use your camera for two weeks or longer, it is best to remove the batteries.
o Store your camera in a cool, dry place away from dust or chemicals. An airtight container that has
a drying agent like silica gel in it would be ideal.
r The camera should never be put or left in places where it may be subject to relatively high tempera-
ture, such as the glove compartment of a motor vehicle.
o lf you have any questions, ask your Minolta dealer. He is knowledgeable in all aspects of
photography, and can help you will all yourwww.butkus.usphotographic needs.
