Autofocusoperationand electronicfocusing confirmation
depend upon the general lightingof the scene, subject contrast
and details,and other technical poinis Under certain conditions,
the automatic focusing system/electronicfocusing confirmation
may experiencedifficulty In these circumstances,we recom-
mend you focus manually using the clear matte field

1) Very dark subject

EXPOSU
Exposurecontrolconsistsof two parts-aperture controland ShutterSpeedDialand ApertureDial
shutterspeedcontrol.The apertureworksbasicallythe same Alwaysset dialsat click-stoppositions-neverin-between.

Programauto is the easiestexposuremodeto use,since it Dual program chart
controlsboth apertureand shutteroperation.The N4004'smicro-
computerautomaticallysets the best combinationof shutter
speedand lensaperture,and matchesthesewith the correct
dual program(normalor highspeed)for the lensin use.Normal f / 1 . 4
programis selectedfor lenseswith focal lengthsshorterthan n
135mm.High-speedprogramis selectedfor lenseswith longer
focallengthsto reducethe possibilityof blurredpicturesdue to 2 . 8
subjectmovementor camerashake.Withzoomlenses,either
normalor high-speedprogramwill be selected,dependingon q)

TheEV (ExposureValue)chartdemonstratesthe difference so o 8
betweenthe N4004'snormaland high-speedprograms.Follow
eithercoloredlineto whereit intersectsa diagonalline.This

the N4004selectsIl2.B and 1/'125sec. with AF 1B0mmf/2.8

camera'smicrocomputerthen classifiesthe lightpatterninto

For sceneswith low lighting(belowEV10),the ready-lightin the
viewfinderblinksto recommendyou use the built-inflashor an
accessoryspeedlight.lf you acceptthis recommendationand
decideto use the flash,the flashwill be controlledby the

meteringsystemsproducevaryingresults.For example:
1. Scene containingthe sun or with high reflectivity
lf a scenecontainshighlights,suchas the sun,snowor bright
reflections,centerweightedmeteringrendersthe mainsubject
as a silhouetteWith Nikon'sadvancedtriple-sensormetering,
however,the lightvalueof darkerpartsis evaluated,resultingin
an overallwell-balancedexposure.
2. Outdoorbacklit subject
Withcenterweightedmetering,a backlitsubjector scenewith
peopleagainsta brightsky and/orcloudsmay leadto an
underexposedshot Withtriple-sensormetering,however,the
cameraautomaticallygivesmore exposureto dark subjectsto Triple-sensormetering
ensurea correctoverallexposure.
3. Front-litsubject against dark background
lf a brightlylit off-centersubjectis positionedagainsta dark
background,centerweightedmeteringplacestoo much
emphasison the darkcenterof the picture.So althoughthe
backgroundis correctlyexposed,the mainsubjectwill be
overexposed.Triple-sensormetering,however,automatically
integratesthe darkbackgroundwith the brightsubjectto

A subjectsignificantlysmallerthanany one of the triple-sensor
areasmay not be recognizedand integratedintothe automatic
