3 Hintson Safety
Generators store electrical energy in condensersby ap.p-
lying high voltages. These form a source of danger, which
must be carefully excluded. Besides general rules on hand-
ling electrical appliances, the following safety measures
must be observed. Therefore, please read and comply with
safety hints within the user manual before turning the
appliance on.
Properuse The present generator is meant for studio use of professio-
nal photographers. Its goal is supplying electrical energyfor
certain frxed types of flash lamps.
lmproperuse The appliance may not be used for any other purpose than
that described above, especially not for generation of elec-
trical energy for flash lamps from other manufacturers or
for other electrical appliances.
Contact with the condenservoltage is perilous, ffid there-
fore opening of the generator case and repairs may only be
made by authorized customer service.
Do not route cables across the studio floor if possible, so
that damage is excluded. If routing across the floor cannot
be omiffe4 then it must be secured that cables are not
damagesby vehicles, ladders, etc.
Damaged cables and casesmust be replaced immediately
by customer service.
Do not stick any objects into ventilation slits, lamp sockets
or into the synchronuation socket.
Do not deposit any objects (tools, coffee cups, etc.) on the
generator.

Flash tubes may only be exchanged by authorized trained
personnel. Exchange of flash tube and the adjusting lamp
may only be effected with the appliance turned off, unplug-
ged from the mains and discharged.
Flash systemsmay not be used in environments with
explosion hazard.
The generatorPORTY 1200 is spray water resistant. The
compact model POKIY COMPACT 500, flash heads, auto-
mobile battery adaptor and charging devices, on the other
hand" must be protected against moisture and water.
Flammable materials, like furnishing fabrics, paper, etc.
may not be stored in the immediate vicinity of generators
and flash lamps to prevent fire hazards.
Ventilation slits of generatorsmust be kept free during ope-
ration and suffrcient air supply must be ensured. trl Generatorsmay only be used on supply lines (mains) with
working protective conductor.
Only lamp connectors with immaculate contactors may be
used" burned or corroded contactors may cause explosions
in the area of connectors and lamp sockets.
Generators- hanging from pantographsor ceiling - must be
doubly securedagainst falling down.
Do not flash into eyes at short distance, becausethis can
lead to eye damage.
Do not look directly into the flash reflector, the flash lamp
could be triggered inadvertently.
Closed rooms should be aired regularly to prevent buildup
of inadmissible ozone concentrations, which can occur due
to the use of high-powered flash systems.
Do not connect accessoriesfrom other manufacfurers, even
if they use the same or similar connectors.
During work in the studio generating much dust, the
appliances must be covered with suitable dust protection
(not during operation). d

4 GeneralInformation
This user manual describesthe portable generator PORTY
1200 as well as the compact flash appliance PORTY COM-
PACT 5OO.
The generator is designed for field use. It has 1200 J
(PORTY COMPACT 500: 500J) stored energy, which can
be regulated digitally in 1/10th steps using 6 (PORTY
COMPACT 500: 4) different apertures.Energy distribution
to the two flash sockets is symmetrical. Using special adap-
tor cables, it is possible to use existing FIENSEL flash
heads (without modeling lamp).
The accumulator supplied with the PORTY 1200 IPORTY
COMPACT 500 can supply over 100 I 250 flashes with full
energy (without modeling lamp), for the smallest aperture
over 3400 I 7600. There are several ways of charging the
accumulator. The accumulator may either be charged while
being in the appliance or after being removed from the
appliance. There is a charging device with a charging time
of 8 hours as well as one with a charging time of 3 hours.
Furthermore, there is an adaptor for direct connection to an
automobile battery 12V and al2Y/24Y charging device for
connection to the cigarette lighter of the vehicle (automo-
bile/truck) available.
Synchronization is either by a water-tight socket with spe-
cial synchronization cable (for PORTY COMPACT 500 by
a 6.3 mm jack socket) or by the built-in slave.
For the accumulator flash range PORTY, special EH heads,
circular flash heads and spots are available. EH heads of
this tlpe are fitted with a modeling lidht I2V|50W. These
heads offer further options for synchronization" triggering
of flashes and handling.

7 Starting Up
Acclimatizing
When moving the generator from one climatic zone to the
next, the generator should stand in the room, in which it
will be operated, for some time before starting it up. This
prevents possible surface leakage currents due to condens-
ing moisture.
Positioning
PORTY generatorscan be operated standing up or lying
down.
For PORTY COMPACI fastening to a tripod is planned;
possible is also safe ceiling mount using a screw M6 and
counter nut.
Automaticoverloadcircuit
In case of large series of flashes in close sequence, the
automatic overload circuit may be triggered. This is dis-
played by flashing of the digital display 5. After cooling
down for a couple of minutes, the PORTY generator is
again ready to flash. Thermal load due to direct sunlight,
radiators or other heat sourcesshould be prevented,
becausethis can already trigger the automatic overload cir-
cuit.

EH 1200 PORTY (code 499)
The special flash head EH 1200 Porty is designed foroper-
ation with the PORTY generator. This head is fitted with a

. To prevent damage of the accumulator, it may not be
totally discharged.Therefore, when reaching 10%
charge on the accumulator charge display 10, or in
case of operation pauses for more than 6 months dura-
tion, the accumulator must be recharged.
. When using it at low temperatures, the accumulator
should be stored in a warmroombefore to achievemorc

Synchronization
Synchronization by slave
The generator can be triggered by the built-in slave 3. frig-
gering is then effected by an "incoming" flash, which was
emitted by another flash light. This mode of operation is
switched on using button 4 anddisplayed by control LED.
Synchronizationby cable
The generator is connected to the camera by synchroniza-
tion socket 9 using the enclosed synchronizationcable.
For PORIY COMPACT 500, synchronizationby 6.3 mm
jack is effected by cable or the optional infrared triggering
system. For this, synchronizationby slave must be
switched off(LED of button 4 does not light up).
The slmchronizing circuit is made of up-to-date semicon-
ductor technology and enables securetriggering of flashes
even with older cameraswith mechanical contactors.
Due to the many different electronic circuits in camerasfor
controlling synchroni zation,we cannot take any liability for
possible damage to camera triggering flashes. Please con-
tact the camera manufacfurer before using an unusual cam- 4 era.
Synchron izationby HEAD EII 1200 PORTY
This special flash head has further triggering functions. For
wireless triggering, the optional infrared triggering system
(code 392) canbe connectedto the 6.3 mm jack.
