HOWTO USE IT
To preparethe unit for operation,take a momentto
familiarizeyourselfwith its controlsand indicators.
Pleaseturn to the Descriptionof Controlspage and
fold out the illustrationsection(insidefront cover).
Locateall the controls,indicatorsand other features
that are called out, so you will be able to find them
easilywhen they are referredto in the instructions.
Pleasenote that the rear of the 550FD is dividedinto
4 separateareas to make your flash easy to use:
Area 1 is for Film Speed settingand has the Film
SpeedWindow(8) and the FitmSpeedSetector(9).
Area2 is for Automatic operationand has the A1 or
A2 f/stop Window(16),the Auto ExposureRange
Window(10),and the Mode Selector(1't).
Area 3 is basicallyfor Manual operationand has the
manualf/stop/DistanceScales(12).This area is
also used for TTL operationto indicatemaximum
TTL auto exposuredistance.
Area 4 has the PowerON/OFF Switch(j5), the Auto
OK Indicator(14),and the FtashReadyLight/Ftash
Test Button(13).
Now proceedas follows:
1. INSTALL THE BATTERIES
Open the BatteryCompartmentDoor (5) by stidingit
in the directionof the arrow.Installfour fresh,size
AA alkalineor fully-chargedNiCad batteries,being
sure that the + and - polaritymarkingscorrespond
to the markingsinsidethe batterycompartment.push
down on the batterieswith your thumb and slide the
BatteryCompartmentdoor closed.
2. MOUNT THE FLASH ON THE CAMERA
IMPORTANT:
When attaching or removing the flash
f rom the camera, always have the flash
ON/OFF Switch in the OFF position to
prevent the possibility of damage to your

Slidethe unit onto the camera'shot shoe.Turn the
knurledlock wheel in the directionof the arrow to
insuresecure mountingto the camera.
3. ENERGIZE UNIT
Slidethe PowerON/OFF Switch fi 5) to the ON
positionto energizethe unit.The ReadyLight (13)
will glow when the unit is readyto be used.
4. SELECT FILM SPEED
Slidethe Film SpeedSelector(9) to the rightor teft
untilthe film speed disptayedin the FitmSpeed
IndicatorWindow(8) matchesthe film speed you are
using in your camera.FAILURETO SET THE
CORRECTFILMSPEEDMAY RESULTIN
IMPROPEREXPOSURESWHENTHE UNIT IS USED
ON SOMEDEDICATEDCAMERAS.
5. SELECT DESIRED FLASH MODE
Try the four settingsof the Mode Setector(11). In the
A1 and A2 settings,automaticexposurewill be
determinedby the flash unit sensorand an f/stop
numberwill appearin the Auto f /Stop Window(.t6).
Set this f /stop on your camera lens.(Note:certain
camerasmay do this automatically.)The
correspondingAuto Rangewill appearin the Auto
ExposureRangeWindow(10) and indicatestne
distancerange (in feet and meters)over which this
settingwill give good exposures.
SettingA'l will providethe greatestauto range,from
6-40 ft., with a relativelyshallowzone of sharpfocus
(depthof field).SettingA2 providesan auto exposure
rangefrom 3-20 ft.,with an increasedzone of sharp
focus. For fastestrecycletime and more flashesper
set of batteries,we recommendusing positionA1
whereverpossible.Of course,your lens must be able
to be set al the correspondingauto f/stop.
In the "M" (manual)setting,thereis no auto
exposurecapability(Nikonownerssee Specific
DedicatedFunctionInstructionssection)and the

www.orphancameras.com Auto f/Stop Window(16)and Auto ExposureRange Window(10)will be blank.However,the Manual DistanceScale (12) will indicatea range of f /stops betweenthe feet and meter scales.To use this scale,determineyour flash-to-subyectdistanceand note the f/stop oppositethis distanceon the scale. Set your camera lens to this f/stop to make your exposure.For properexposurein the manualmode, you must selecta differentf/stop settingas you changeflash-to-sublectdistances. When the Mode Selectoris set to the TTL position (for Nikon owners,the M/TTL position),automatic exposurewill be determinedby the camera metering system.The Auto ExposureRangeWindow(10) and the Auto f/Stop Window(16) will be blank.To determinethe maximumauto exposuredistancefor TTL, observethe distanceon the ManualDisrance Scale(12) oppositethe f /stop you have chosen,or check the TTL f/Stop DistanceChart at the rear of this manual. Note lor 550FD Canon/Rlcoh model users: In the R/TTL position,the 550FDperformsmost dedicated functionson the Ricoh XR-P camera,includingTTL and auto fill-flash.The R/TTL settinghas no function for Canon camerasand when flashedin fhat setting on a Canon camera,the 550FDoroducesa full power manualflash withoutautomaticexposure. 6. AUTO OK INDICATOR (Sufficient Light Indicalor) The Auto OK Indicator(14) operatesonty in the A1, A2 and TTL auto settings.The Auto OK Indicator confirms that your subject will be correctly exposed. For properuse of the Auto OK Indicatorat the 41 or A2 settings,aim the flash at your key subjectand pressthe FlashTest Button(13) while watchingthe Auto OK Indicator.The Auto OK will light up and iTlowgreen if-the subjectis withinthe auto range.lf no green lightis seen,reduceyour flash-to-sublect distance,or if you are usingA2 switchto A1. 4View original page 8

By "bouncing"flash off reflectivesurfacessuch as the ceiling,subjectscan be more sofflylighted.Avoid coloredreflectivesurfaceswhen using color film. since bouncedlight will be influencedby such colors.affectingresultsaccordingly.To determine correctoperatingrange under "bounce" conditions, check the Auto OK lndicatorexplainedabove. 8. 4. Once the internaltimer circuit is off (usuallytakes
about20-30 seconds)picturesmay be taken after
the flash ready lightglows withoutfurtherwaiting
for camera timer circuit.
