SHORT COURSE E)
To prepare the unit for operation, take a moment to
familiarize yourself with ils controls and indicators.
Please turn to the description of parts and fold out the z1illustration of front the unit (inside cover). Locate all of ln indicatorsthe controls, and other features that are
called out, so you will be able to find them easily when
they are referred to throughout the instructions.
The rear of the Model 600 is divided into five seoarate
areas to make your flash easy to use:
Area 1 is for film speed setting and has the Film Slic knuSpeed Selector (8) and the Film Speed Window (7).
Area 2 is for f /stop selection (9). insr
is is for range of useArea which effected 3 by the 3. 1 (16),Mode Selector in Area 3, also the Zoom and
Selector (Area 4). The Mode Selector determines Slic
whelher TTL (through the lens), A1, 42 or manual to€
operation is to be used. "A" stands for aperture. whr
Area 4 is fo/fldsh'ioorn selection (1'l) which should
be matched to the focal length of the lens on your 4.:
camera, i.e. 28mm, 35mm, 50mm or 105mm or longer. Slic
Area 5 has the Power On/Off Switch (12), Auto OK unt

E) Push the Battery Holder into the flash slightly and
slide the Battery Compartment Cover (17) forward
until it is firmly seated.
2. MOUNTTHE FLASH ON THE CAMERA
IMPORTANT:
When attaching or removing the flash from the
camera, always have the flash On/Off Switch in
the Off position to prerrent the remote possibil-
ity of damage to youl'camera.
Slide the unit onto the camera's hot shoe. Turn the
knurled lock wheel in the direction of the arrow lo
insure secure mounting to the camera.
3. ENERGIZE UNIT
Slide the Power On/Off Switch (12) to the On posilion
to energize the unit. The Ready Light (15) will glow
when the unit is ready ,o o" u"ulufr*_ .u,
4. SELECTFILM SPEED
Slide the Film Speed Selector (8) to the right or left
untilthe lilm speed displayed in the Film Speed Win-
dow (7) matches the film speed you are using in your
camera. FAILURE TO SET THE CORRECT FILM
SPEED MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER EXPOSURES
WHEN THE UNIT IS USED ON SOME DEDICATED
CAMERAS.
5. SELECT THE DESIRED FLASH MODE
In the A1 and A2 settings, automatic exposure will be
determined by the tlash unit's Thyristor Sensor (2) and
an f /slop number will appear in the f /stop Range
Window (9). Set this t/stop on your camera. (Note:
Some cameras may do this automatically.) The red or
blue bar illustrates the usable distances over whtchView original page 7Page 8 · Read text
the flash will give good exposures at that f /stop ano
will appear in the Range/Distance Window (10)
Setting 41 will provide the greatest auto exposure
range wlth a relalively shallow depth of field. The A2
setting provides an increased depth of field while
reducing the maximum distance at which the auto
exposure will function. For fastest recvcle time ano
more flashes per set of balteries, we recommend
using position Al wherever possible. Of course, your
tens must be able to be set at the correspondino
f /stoo. 7
In the "M" (Manual) setting, there is no auto exoosure Ir
capability. However, the f /stop window will indtcate a T
range of f /stops that can be used in the manual mode. A
To use this scale, you must determine the flash_to- fir
subject distance and note the f /stop opposite this dis_ pl
tance on the scale. Set your camera lens to this f/stop s(
to make your exposure. For proper exposure in the th
manual mode, you must select a drfferenl f /slop as ln
you change the flash-to-subject distance. th
When the Mode Selector is set to TTL, and assuming s(
your camera has a TTL flash feature, automatic expo_ al
sure will be determined by the metering system in the 8l
camera. The Range/Distance scale ( l 0) will be blank. W

reNote lor Canon/Ricoh model users: In the R_TTL V€positron, the 600 performs most dedicated functions "e
on Ricoh TTL equipped cameras (see detailed sec-
tion), including TTL and auto fill_flash. The R_TTL set_ sh
ting has no function for Canon cameras and when
flashed in that setting on a Canon camera, the 600 8.

6. SELECT FLASH COVERAGE ANGLE
A) Set lhe flash Zoom Head to match the angle of the
lens you are using.
B) Set the Zoom Setting Selector (11 ) on lhe rear
panel of the flash to the same setting as the zoom
angle of the flash Zoom Head.
Note: The angle of coverage of the flash should
be at least equal to or wrder.than the focal length
or zoom setting of the camera lens in use.
7. AUTO OK INDICATOR (Sulllclent Llght
Indicator)
The Auto OK Indicator (14) operates onty in the At ,
A2 and TTL auto settings. The Auto OK Indicator con-
firms that your subject will be correctly exposed. For
proper use of the Auto OK Indicator at the 41 or A2
settings, aim the flash at your key subject and press
the Flash Test Button (1 5) while watching the Auto OK
lndicator. The Auto OK will light up and glow green if
the subject is within the auto range. lf no green light is
seen, reduce your flash-to-subject distance, or if you
are using A2 switch to 41 . lf no green is seen afler
switching to A'l , move closer.
When using the TTL setting, the Auto OK will only
work if an actual exposure is made with the flash att-
ached to the camera. In that case film must be loaded
in the camera. For tesl purposes, a light-toned piece
of paper should be positioned at the film plane as a
film substilute and the camera back must be closed.
Please note that light-toned paper may give incorrect
responses due to its difference in reflective quality
versus actual film. In eilher case, an actual flash
"exposure" must be made by depressing the camera
shutter release button, causing the flash to fire.
8. BOUNCE FLASH
By "bouncing" flash off reflective surfaces such as the
ceiling, subjects can be more softly lighted Avoid
colored reflective surfaces when using color film,View original page 9Page 10 · Read text
since bounced light will be influenced by such colors,
affecting results accordingly. To determine correct
operating range under "bounce" conditions, check the
Auto OKlndiCator exolained above. D)
E)
9. HIGH VOLTAGE INPUT SOCKET F)
Three optional accessory power supplies are available G)
for the flash unit. They are the Series 1 HV-Pro High H)Voltage Power Pack, HVP-I High Voltage Power Pack
and the Vivitar SB-4 AC Adapter. All of them plug into
the High Voltage Input Socket (3). The HV-Pro and r)
HVP-1 Power Packs provide very fast recycle time
and many more flashes than the AA or NiCad batter- GT
ies alone. The SB-4 AC Adaoter allows the flash to
operate from a 'l 10V or 220V AC outlet, which is a Zoo
convenience and a saving when many flash shots are Pos
being made in a home or studio. 1 05r
